Supersized Earth: A Place To Live

Sunday, 1 September 2013 New Series

Supersized Earth traces the spectacular story of how humans have transformed our world in a generation. In this awe-inspiring three part

series, we travel the globe with presenter Dallas Campbell visiting the world's largest and most ambitious engineering projects, exploring the

power of human ingenuity and the making of the modern world.

This first episode explores how we've been redesigning the planet as we build ever more astonishing places to live. In Dubai we climb to the

very top of the world's tallest building - over half a mile above the desert sand - to clean the highest windows in the world; and explore how

desert wastelands have been transformed into bristling forests of skyscrapers as we've conquered the sky and turned it into a place we can call

home. In China the rate of change is accelerating as millions move into the cities; so, to keep pace they've learned to erect 30 storey

buildings in less than three weeks. The world is changing underneath our feet too: we dive beneath Mexico City with one of the two-man team

whose unenviable job it is to keep the city sewers flowing, before examining a very new-world solution to this age-old problem.

himself and help the woman he loves. Encouraging the kids to write their own words, they both realise it's tapping into hidden skills.

Chai Li and Herb create tension as they argue over what he perceives as her insensitivity towards Rosa when she talks about returning to

Vietnam.

cathartic release for them both. CAST: Justine Clarke, Shane Jacobson, Claudia Karvan, William McInnes, Stephen Curry and Michelle Vergara

Friday, 6 September 2013 New Series

The Honourable Miss Phryne Fisher is back!

The second series of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries builds on the meticulously constructed world of series one as it follows the independent,

glamorous and unflappable leading lady detective Phryne Fisher (Essie Davis).

This lush take on the traditional crime drama explores the fascinating and varied sub cultures of 1920s 'between-the-wars' Melbourne.

Episode one, Murder Most Scandalous, is set in sumptuous brothels and respectable mansions. When Jack's ex-father-in-law, Deputy Commissioner

George Sanders (Neil Melville), is implicated in the brutal murder of a prostitute, Jack is determined to clear his name. Despite strict

instructions from Jack not to meddle in his case - which also reintroduces Jack's ex-wife Rosie (Dee Smart) - Phryne decides to perfect her

'fan dance' in order to go undercover at the gentleman's club of the notorious Madam Lyon (Belinda McClory).

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries also stars Ashleigh Cummings, Miriam Margolyes, Tammy MacIntosh,Travis McMahon, Anthony Sharpe, Richard Bligh

Catalyst

Fossils Exposed:

A surprise unearthing of fossils beneath a Brisbane building site could fill a gap in the paleontological record, and explain how life continued after the dinosaurs. This treasure trove of fossils, believed to be around 55 million years old, holds evidence of the existence of ancient crocodiles, fish, shells and plants. The find is remarkable because these creatures lived after the dinosaurs were wiped out, but before Australia's mega fauna emerged. Called the ‘paleontological dark ages’ not much is known about the flora and fauna during this time. Mark Horstman investigates.

Wings of Wonder:

If you need your hip or knee joint replaced, a titanium implant is a common choice among surgeons. They're light, durable and strong, and they are readily accepted by the human body. Unfortunately bacteria love the surface of titanium too and despite the most stringent sterilisation procedures, some surgeries result in deadly infection. How to make titanium resistant to bacteria is a puzzle that has been keeping researchers occupied for years. Anja Taylor reports on an extraordinary discovery about the physical properties of insect wings that could offer new hope for a medical surface that can literally shred bacteria.

Australian Museum Eureka Prizes - a celebration of science:
