What's Up...

In your hands is the first edition of What's The Word, a publication of the Media Club at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem.

Meet the Staff of "What's The Word":

Brusela, age 13

Grade 7, Collins Middle School

Fun facts: I love to draw and go to the movies. I love

basketball but only when the kids are playing it, not on TV.

The goal of this Comcast sponsored program, is to introduce Club members to media communications, encourage them to express their point of view and report on Club happenings. It is their chance to show the community how much they care about their Club while learning essential communication and writing skills.

Each Tuesday afternoon, Club members ages 11-15 meet to exchange ideas and talk about stories they are working on for What's The Word. Members of this program were chosen by Club Program Director, Jodi Sperling, based on their enthusiasm, leadership, communication skills and ability to work independently and as a team. The program is facilitated by Board Member and Boston Herald Advertising Manager, Beth O'Grady.

When working on a story, the staff works independently, walking the halls of the Club conducting interviews, armed with their reporter notebooks and digital camera. Other weeks they welcome guest speakers such as Tom Dalton, a reporter from the Salem Evening News who shared interviewing tips, Anne Driscoll, a writer for People magazine who shared her journey into the world of journalism, and Karen Brooks, Community Relations Manager for Comcast, the sponsor of this program.

This newspaper will be published quarterly during the school year. Articles will include Club programs, interviews with staff, board and community members and photos and feedback from Club members of all ages. While we cannot help but promote some upcoming events and pass along information we'd like you to know, we promise this newspaper will mostly reflect thoughts, opinions and stories from the point of view of our Club members.

Thanks for reading What's The Word. While you are reading, we are

working on our next edition!

WORD WITH ... Karen Brooks, Comcast Community Relations Manager

By Ryan and Brusela

Comcast recognizes the importance of Boys & Girls Clubs in the communities they serve, and is the sponsor of the What's The Word Media Club at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem.

As Karen states, "Comcast supports organizations that focus on the areas of literacy, youth leadership and volunteerism, and this program combines all of those elements." In addition to being the sponsor of the media program, Comcast also provides free internet access to Boys & Girls Clubs and has donated cable TV spots in March and April to help promote the Club in the towns of Salem and Peabody.

Karen Brooks in the Computer Lab at the Club

Although Comcast is a very large company, they partner with smaller non- profits in the communities they serve, which allows them to make personal connections. When asked what she liked best about her job, Karen said "Things like meeting this media club. I enjoy getting out and meeting the people Comcast supports."

Karen grew up in Florida and while she did not have a Boys & Girls Club in her neighborhood, she wished she did. No stranger to journalism, Karen got the writing bug in high school when she joined her yearbook staff. Her original dream of being a doctor was replaced when she decided to study Journalism and Public Relations at the University of Florida. Thank you Karen and Comcast for being a friend of our Club!

Fun facts: Person Karen would most like to interview: Bono "He works with so many great causes around the world. They (U-2)were the opening act for J. Geils years ago!" What program would she like to take: Powerhour!

CHECK INSIDE FOR MORE COOL STUFF: The newspaper staff finds out the 411 on Executive Director AnnMarie Tanzella and Board President Chris Zorzy... What's going on at club? We took some photos to show you! PLUS...Hoop Dreams at the Club, Where in the World Would You Like to Travel? and other stuff we'd like you to know.

WORD WITH... AnnMarie Tanzella

Executive Director, Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem

THE 411 ON... Chris Zorzy

President, Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem

by Bonnibel and Lindsay

by Ryan

Ann Marie Jannoni Tanzella is the Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem. She is 46 years of age, married to Steve and has a 10-year old daughter, Gina who attends the Club. AnnMarie has been the Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem for 2 years but has a total of 14 years of experience working in different clubs. Her main goals are to have strong programs, a fun environment and to have a wonderful staff.

Ann Marie is proud that kids love to come to the Club. When she was younger she went to a club similar to this one, but she could only go at certain times because at that time it was a `Boys Club'. Which leads us to some of the changes AnnMarie has made since she joined the Salem Club. Now the staff more closely represents the members they serve, and girl members have more female role models to look up to. There are also more full time staff and programs than ever before.

For my first assignment, I interviewed Chris Zorzy, the President of the Board of Directors for the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem and owner of A&A Services in Salem.

When I was told I had to interview the President I got really nervous and didn't know what to do or what questions to ask. But once he came into the room with a big smile on his face, I knew he was a cool guy. As a child, Chris loved trucks and his aspiration was to be a "Rubbish Man". Despite being teased by his family, he said "They laughed at me, but I was the only one to fulfill my childhood dreams".

Prior to being President, Chris was active in the Salem Rotary where he coordinated the Boston Bruins Alumni Fundraiser to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem. Chris not only donates money to the Club; he also rolls up his sleeves and gets his hands dirty, helping to paint rooms and cover windows to conserve heat.

Writing this article is Bonnibel and Lindsay. We wanted to delve deeper into who AnnMarie is outside of the Club. What we found is that we are similar; as teens we love pizza, and it is her favorite food! Here are some other interesting little known personal facts:

Q: Did you ever want to be prom queen? A: Of course, who doesn't?

When I asked him what motivates him to volunteer for the Club, he said "I really believe in the cause and I am pleased to give back and help the youth of Salem". When asked what his plans were, he said, "To raise money to keep the Club going, and make it a safe place for members." I asked what he wanted the community to know about the club and he said, "There are a lot of great things going on at the Club. But to keep things happening we need the help and support of our community".

Q: What was your most embarrassing moment? A: In college, I had a part in the show Grease. My job was to dance at the carnival. While I was dancing down the platform I went flying off in the middle of the stage while the play was going.

Q: How did you feel about cheerleaders when you were in high school? A: I had friends that were cheerleaders and I liked them, except for one snotty girl.

Q: What is your favorite season and why? A: Summer, because I like to travel a lot.

Q: Where are some of the places you visited? A: Japan, Germany, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Caribbean Islands, and all over the U.S.

For a final question I asked him what program would he chose if he were a member of the club and he said "Career Launch, of course... I'm an entrepreneur!"

FUN FACTS ABOUT CHRIS: -he loves to ski & play hockey -he has been married to his wife Barbara for 18 years -they have 5 year old Twins Meredith & Craig, and 7 year old Rachel -he played Little League Baseball for the Major Leagues on the Indians -his favorite colors: blue & red (his company's logo colors)

Program Spotlight...It's a Slam Dunk! What's the Word on the Traveling Basketball Teams

by Alex and Jonangel

This years' tryouts for the traveling basketball teams were well attended. For each team there were 3 days of tryouts. They had to do drills of running, shooting, lay-ups, and scrimmages. For each team more than 20 people tried out, but only a certain amount of players can make it on the team. Some of the places that the teams traveled to were Nashua, Newton, Lynn, Chelsea, Billerica, Waltham, Dorcheter and Salem, NH.

We interviewed the coaches and asked them some insider questions. We asked, "Was it

hard choosing who you wanted to be on your team?" Matt answered "It's hard because

there are a lot of kids that I would want to see on the team based on their efforts, but there

are only so many spots". We also asked him "What made you want to be a coach?" His

answer: "Being able to pass down

my knowledge".

Quick Facts about `B-ball at the Club':

-There are 3 traveling teams

-18 & under; 24 tried out: 14 made it; record 3-7

The 12 & Under Team with Coach Matt Carr

-15 & under: 30 tried out: 15 made it; record 2-7

Andre Daley, Teen Director and coach, likes coaching his team because its fun. He said his team needs to improve in defense and communication. Andre thought it was hard to pick the team because he had to pick the people that meshed well together, and he thinks his team is going to do well.

-12 & under: 25 tried out: 15 made it; record 5-3 -Andre Daley, Teen Director, coaches 18 & under -Matt Carr, Athletic Director, coaches 12 & under -Andre & Matt are co-coaches of 15 & under

Shani, age 17, is on the 18 & under team. Shani thinks "The team is positive. It helps keep one another out of trouble and in a safe environment". To Shani, practice is difficult and gets the team ready for the next level, which is college.

Alex, age 14, is a member of the 15 & under team.. Alex enjoys playing scrimmage games and his number for the team is 1. As a member of the Boys & Girls Club, Alex enjoys coming Monday through Saturday.

Shani, 18 & Under Team

Joamer, age 12, is number 5 on the 12 & under team. Joamer believes his team is going to have a perfect season. Joamer's team does a lot of suicides during practice. Suicides are running to the foul line back to half court back to the other foul line back to the other side of the court and back and stop.

While there is an in-house league for girls basketball, there are currently no traveling teams, but Athletic Director Matt Carr hopes to see enough interest to start one in the near future.

"A DAY AT THE CLUB" by Brusela and Naomi

We investigated what was happening at the Boys & Girls Club on January 18, 2008

Let's see what we found...

Tyler seems very concentrated on this game of foosball.

Nick is often a Game Room Champion winning Billiards tournaments and Bumper Pool on a regular basis.

Michael shows some of his artistic talents on the chalkboard.

Justin and Junior Staff member Ryan play a very intense game of ping pong.

Lily being the `artiste' she knows she can be, busy with fuse beads.

The art room is always busy buzzing with kids getting out their creative juices (bzzzz)...

Snow White (a.k.a Yvonne) is playing Guy, a staff member, in a game of Connect 4. It looks like she is telling him which move to make.

Girl's Gym takes place every Tuesday and Thursday, giving us girls our own chance to compete and let out some energy!

Ian, Karmryn, and Michelle play an exiting game of Cadoo, acting, drawing, and sculpting out each phrase.

Miguel and Marcus both have a wife and 2 kids in the game of Life.

Looks like fun in the computer lab. I wonder what website they are on?
