Style Exercise 1

Find the errors in the following sentences using your Associated Press Stylebook. Pay particular attention to the use of numbers, and the different rules that apply. Cross out the errors and write your corrections above them using copy editing symbols. These exercises will help prepare you for graded style quizzes later this semester.

1. A diaper saved a 10 month old baby from a gunshot wound.

2. Grace Ford, a 20 year old mother, said the robbers stole 5000 dollars.

3. 10-month-old Brandi Ford was wearing an extra thick diaper, which may have saved her life.

4. She was sitting in her living room at 11:30 P.M. Monday night when robbers burst into her home.

5. Right-handed females tend to live five years longer than left handed females. Right-handed males live 10 years longer than left-handed males.

6. Residents may register to vote at the county clerk’s office on Tuesday from 8 in the morning to 9 at the night.

7. Jason got received a postcard thirty years late.

8. Even people who drink fewer than 3 cups of coffee a day may suffer caffeine withdrawal if they abruptly quit drinking coffee.

9. Businesses in Maine that have more than fifteen employees must educate workers about sexual harassment.

Style Exercise 2

Correct the errors in the following sentences:

1. The police officer in charge of the investigation was Sergeant Frank Lavender.

2. The woman’s daughter was just five years old.

3. Fire officials said that twelve people had to be relocated because of the fire.

4. The survey showed that ninety % of the American people lie routinely.

5. The artificial lake cost the man 8,000 dollars.

6. The 60 year-old man lives at 950 Samuel street in Louisville.

7. John Tyler’s phone bill last month that was $110 thousand, 99 dollars and 44 cents.

8. Most of the telephone calls were to places along the east coast of the U.S.

9. Tyler said 3261 calls were on the bill which required postage of $2.90.

10. One of the calls was placed at 5:51 P.M. on July 27 and another was made it 8:00 a.m.

Style Exercise 3

Correct the errors in the following sentences:

1. The survey shows that 3 to 4 children die every day from child abuse; more than half of those who died were under age one and seventy-nine% of the deaths were among children under age five.

2. A fire started at 3:00 p.m. and caused 45 thousand dollars worth of damage to a home in the 2,300 block of Main St.

3. Murders in the state are up 53% and violent crime increased two %.

4. A man who threw a two by three foot velvet painting of Elvis Presley at officers was 42-years-old.

5. Almost 2,500 Americans were killed at Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941.

6. Tuition will increase 12 % at the University of Missouri and will effect students at all four campuses.

7. 45 people volunteered to repair homes for disadvantaged people.

8. The 36 year old patient said “I’m going to jump”.

9. The two to one vote by the county commission to ban non-domesticated pets will effect Mariaha, a 300 lb. Bengal tiger.

10. The tiger lives in a house that has a four-foot fence in the front yard.

Style exercise 4

Correct the errors in the following sentences:

1. The government estimates that more then 11,000 sea turtles drown in shrmp nets in waters in the U.S. each year.

2. A shrimper was imprisoned for failing to use a federally-mandated turtle protection device on his boat.

3. The store was at 1,202 Maple Rd.

4. There were 10 lbs. of cheese and four pounds. of tomatoes in the refrigerator.

5. Houston Police Sergeant Roy House said the suspect defrauded employers out of $150,000 dollars.

6. The United States Department of Agriculture (first reference) employs 7000 meat inspectors.

7. The USDA (second reference) operates a training center at College Station, Texas where veterinarians attended classes.

8. The defendent was convicted of possessing three ounces of cocaine.

9. The story was about a woman with Alzheimer’s Disease.

10. The female gorilla is from the east coast.

Style exercise 5

Correct the errors in the following sentences:

1. He is survived by his sons in Lansing, MI. and a daughter in Dallas TX.

2. Jim Henson began appearing on television with the Muppets in the 1960’s.

3. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday afternoon.

4. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

5. She died on September 9, 1992 of a heart attack.

6. Father James Flanagan is the priest at the roman catholic church in our town.

7. She received her Masters degree from Florida State university.

8. Survivors include fifteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

9. Interment will be in the Greenlawn cemetery.

10. She lived at 1,200 Westside Rd.

Style exercise 6

Correct the errors in the following sentences:

1. The board voted three to two to have a public hearing about banning some books from the library.

2. The Lawrence city commission will discuss an ordinance to bann nudity from bars or restaurants that serve alchohol.

3. Mike Wildgen, City Manager, said the proposed law would only be affected businesses that serve liquor.

4. The first amendment to the constitution guarantees the right to freedom of expression so the proposed ordinence cannot be applied to places that don’t serve alcohol, said the county’s Chief deputy counselor.

5. Vice Mayor Charles Shorter was so impressed by the pig that he said he might consider getting one himself.

6. The issue of banning pigs was discussed by the St. Petersburg city council.

7. One woman brought her potbellied pig to city hall when the council debated the ordinence.

8. Earvin Magic Johnson had a guaranteed contract for $3,100,000.

9. Byrd Osborn is very concerned about preserving the Constitutional guaranties of free-speech.

10. Osborn said that many colleges had adopted speech codes in the 1990’s.
