Lab: Blood Types

Scenario:

Today was a busy day for our police force in Independence KY. The crazy pioneer puppet struck 6 times today. At each of his crime scenes he or she leaves behind a pioneer puppet. This individual is toying (ha, ha, ha) with the fine citizens of Independence. The Independence police force is too busy to handle all of the crime scene investigations. You know how to tell the difference between different blood types, so the police will need your help. It is up to you to help grab the pioneer puppet. Each crime scene group has been given a sample of blood found at one of the 6 crime scenes. Each group has also been given blood samples of 4 suspects who hate the Simon Kenton Pioneers

Materials:

← Crime scene blood sample

← Mr. Smith blood sample

← Mr. Jones blood sample

← Mr. Green blood sample

← Ms. Brown blood sample

← 5 blood typing trays

← simulated anti-A typing serum

← simulated anti-B typing serum

← simulated anti-Rh typing serum

← toothpicks

Procedure:

1. Label each blood typing trays:

1. Crime Scene

2. Mr. Smith

3. Mr. Jones

4. Mr. Green

5. Ms. Brown

2. Place three drops of crime scene blood in each of the A, B, and Rh wells of

tray 1.

3. Place three drops of Mr. Smith’s blood in each of the A, B, and Rh wells of tray 2.

4. Place three drops of Mr. Jones’s blood in each of the A, B, and Rh wells of tray 3.

5. Place three drops of Mr. Green’s blood in each of the A, B, and Rh wells of tray 4

6. Place three drops of Ms Brown’s blood in each of the A, B, and Rh wells of tray 5

7. Add three drops of simulated anti-A serum in each A well on the 5 trays.

8. Add three drops of simulated anti-B serum in each B well on the 5 trays.

9. Add three drops of simulated anti-Rh serum in each Rh well on the 5 trays.

10. Stir each mixture with a different clean toothpick. Use only one toothpick per well to avoid cross contamination.

11. Observe and record the results below. If you observed agglutination (clumping) record agglutination in table. If you observed no agglutination record no agglutination. If the blood agglutinates that means that those antigens are present.
