DOSA Activity 10.26.17 Group Dennis, Pete, April and JennyDirections: Take 5 minutes to think about a time when DOSA been at its best. Please describe in the space below. I think we’re at its best when we’re engaged more… when email are less formal, when Friday forums were spaces to just get together and talk, when we had division work/groups committees. I think because we are so big now, we need to get back to that. Food pantry, move-in, Union Street Fire, commencement… when we come together. When we work together, we shine. The draft DOSA mission statement is:??????????????? We care. We foster community. We empower students.? We make OHIO better. The draft DOSA vision statement is:??????????????? We strive for excellence so that each student cares personally and makes the world a better place.? Answer these questions. Does the mission reflect our strengths? Is it missing anything? What do you like about it? What do you not like about it? Really like the mission statement. It’s simple and memorable, it fits. I feel like “leaders” is missing. I feel I try to encourage students to be leaders every day and feel like it should be in either the mission or vision statement. We should rearrange it… to “We care. We empower students. We foster community. We make OHIO better.“Better doesn’t seem strong enough.” We talked about “strong or stronger”. So our group pitches this as the final mission statement:We care. We empower students.? We foster community. We make OHIO stronger. Does the vision reflect where we want to be so we can close gaps and be a better DOSA? Is it missing anything? What do you like about it? What do you not like about it? The vision didn’t really speak to any of the people in our group. People struggled with this more and felt as thought it didn’t really capture our essence. We discussed “leaders” quite a bit. One person pitched “We create leaders who change the world”, but another group didn’t like that. Because we don’t really create leaders, nor do we really want to for some of our students. This group felt better about taking every student a little bit further in their development. Every student graduating a little bit “better” than they entered, because of an interaction with DOSA.Some themes that were important in our conversations about the vision:Our collective impact. The connectivity with have with each other in DOSA and the strength of that connection. Amplifying the humanity in every student. Making every student better. Every student, every day. Every students’ growth. We had each person write their own vision. These are what we heard:We strive to make a positive impact on all OHIO students and encourage them to exceed their potential as a student and a citizen. We create leaders who change the world.Inspiring individuals to care for their personal growth, coupled with playing a role in developing the community as a whole. To help students leaving OHIO to move out into the world promoting the humanity of all.We provide unparalleled commitment to teaching students the best methods to unify their communities, advance leadership and skills of empathy and leave a positive impression on others. After listening and synthesizing, our group proposes a vision statement like this one:Through our unparalleled commitment to creating inclusive and engaging learning environments, we strive to help every student at OHIO exceed their potential. DOSA Activity 10.26.17 Group Dana, Jeremy and Brian When was DOSA at its best? When we were collaboratingWhen we all know what’s going on in our other departments and how we can support each otherProfessional development opportunities for the whole divisionWelcome Weekend and BSO. Need something like this for 2, 3, 4 year students. Best when the diversity offices were within the divisionThoughts on the mission:Change better to “stronger”Each department is already doing all of these things. Can we make it sound more collaborative, stronger together?Thoughts on the vision:Too fluffy. Such a strong mission and then a fluffy vision. Needs to pair better.Care personally… about what? Folks were getting hung up on this phrase. Don’t use the phrase, “so that”Add collaboration DOSA Activity 10.26.17 Group Rich, Tasha, Monica and Jim The draft DOSA mission statement is:??????????????? ??????????????? We care. We foster community. We empower students.? We make OHIO better. The draft DOSA vision statement is:??????????????? ??????????????? We strive for excellence so that each student cares personally and makes the world a better place.? Note: Number in () means the number of times this comment was shared. When has DOSA been at its best?I’m new to DOSA but what I remember is when Jenny came to the dining halls, rallied all the staff, and discussed departmental goals. I was shocked by the enthusiasm of the staff to participate and feel like I changed my mindset to focus more on the student aspect.Being together at DOSA meetings and listening how various departments make a positive difference in student’s lives. In times of crisis (ie student death) DOSA is ready to provide support to students/staff and faculty.Mission CommentsDoes the mission reflect our strengths? It is very unique. Is it missing anything? Suggestion: We care. We foster community. We equip students to contribute and achieve. Needs to show that we support our students.Suggestion: We care. We foster diverse community. We empower students.? We make OHIO better. What type of community are we trying to foster? What community are we talking about?Needs the word diversity. We foster inclusive community. We care for all. What do you like about it? Short and to the point. Very easy to remember. (4)Like the words care and empower (2)This session is supporting community.Like the components. What do you not like about it?Sounds too much like a slogan. It is very non-traditional.Make Ohio better. Need to use another word but not better. (2)We do make Ohio better so use a different word.We make Ohio excel. The word better does not fit with the rest of the mission statement. How do we get there? It sounds like a tag line.It is fragmented.Make the four sentences one sentence so it flows better. Suggestion: We care, foster community, and empower students to make OHIO a better place to live and learn.Vision CommentsDoes the vision reflect where we want to be so we can close gaps and be a better DOSA?Suggestion: We envision a university where each student cares personally and strives to make the world a better place.Suggestion: We strive for excellence so that each student is cared for personally and makes the world a better place.Suggestion: We work together to strive for excellenceSuggestion: We work together to strive for excellence so that each student is invested in their community and in making the world a better place. Is it missing anything? The word transformational. We change lives. It needs more meat. What do you like about it?It is fineI like the work care. What do you not like about it?Have a problem with we strive for excellence makes it sounds like we are not excellent. Could we what to be?More powerful word than better. Not DOSA specific. Too generic.Sounds a little “cheesy”.Don’t like the word personally.DOSA Activity 10.26.17 Group Todd and Tim 1.) Onboarding – campus rec & DOSA. Informational sessions, bring everyone on the same page, other departments do not do that. Focus on integration- here to learn, not just to work.CollaborationCrisis response- Union Street fire, bringing the community together to supportInitiatives across departments: OP, CSSR, Faculty Challenge ProgramStaff supporting each other- attending events, programs, etc. outside of direct responsibility.Draft DOSA mission statement“We empower students” should come before “We foster community”“We make OHIO better” is too broadDraft DOSA vision statementIntegration of all departmentsPositive student experience2.)Question 1:Needs to be broad- focus on care, community, studentsCan use mission statement because it is short and to the pointEmphasizes our strengths of care, compassion, community, etc.“We make OHIO better” is broadQuestion 2:Begin vision with “We empower students to make the world a better place through ___ & ___”Dislike “...each student cares personally”. Don’t ‘get it’.Not focus on future- vision strive for excellence. What can we do to improve? We care. We empower students.? We foster community. We make OHIO stronger. Every student at OHIO realizes their potential and makes a difference. We work together to strive for excellence so that each student is invested in their community and in making the world a better place.Through our unparalleled commitment to creating inclusive and engaging learning environments, we strive to help every student at OHIO realize their potential.
