Concordia 60 at Whitworth College 63 - Game Recap

SPOKANE, Wash-- Concordia let an eight-point lead with less than nine minutes left to go in the game slip away and lost 63-60 to nationally ranked, and unbeaten, Whitworth (Wash.) in the final game of the Quality Inn Whit Holiday Classic in the Whitworth Fieldhouse in Spokane, Wash.

The Cobbers seemed to break open the game in the second half after the contest was deadlocked at 32-32 at halftime. Concordia built a 53-45 lead with 8:57 remaining, but proceeded to get outscored 18-7 down the stretch and lose by three.

The loss drops Concordia's overall record to 4-3, while the Pirates remain perfect and up their mark to 9-0.

Mandy Pearson (Sr., Watkins, Minn.) and Melanie Hageman (Fr., Fargo, N.D.) were the only Cobbers to score more than seven points in the game. Pearson put up team-highs in points (18) and rebounds (9). She only had three assists in the game, which were offset by seven turnovers. Hageman finished the game with 11 points and six rebounds. Both players were named to the Quality Inn Whit Holiday Classic All-Tournament Team.

Tiffany Speer led all players in scoring for Whitworth. The preseason All-American finished with 23 points and collected a game-high 11 rebounds. Teammate Sarah Shogren, also a preseason All-American, added 14 points and 11 rebounds. She was named the tournament MVP.

Statistically, the game was plagued by turnovers and streaky shooting. The two teams combined for 42 turnovers - 22 by the Cobbers. Concordia shot 39.7% (25-of-63) from the floor for the game, as compared to 36.8% (21-of-57) for Whitworth. The one discrepancy in the scoresheet was the difference in free throws attempted. The Pirates went 17-of-23 from the free throw line, while the Cobbers shot only six free throws the entire game and converted on four of the attempts.

GAME 8

#25 Carleton College (6-0 MIAC/6-3)

at

Concordia College (2-2 MIAC/4-3)

January 5, 2005

Memorial Auditorium

Moorhead, MN

GAME TIME: 5:30 pm

SERIES: Concordia leads 36-9

SERIES STARTED: 1981

LAST YEAR: Last year Carleton swept all three games between the two schools. The biggest game of the three was the championship of the MIAC Tournament. The Knights won the title game 62-40 and wound up going to the NCAA Tourney for the fourth straight season. In the first two games during the regular season, Carleton won 71-59 in Northfield and 67-63 in Moorhead. The four-point win was the closest game between the two teams since the series started back in 1981. In that game the Cobbers had a 34-27 lead at halftime but were outscored 40-29 in the second half. In the tournament final, the Cobbers were done in by a horrible first half. They scored only 10 points, and shot just 6.0%

(2-for-31). They did not score their first points until the 11:37 mark of the opening half.

SERIES HISTORY: The series between the two teams can be written in two sections. Concordia dominated the opening chapter, winning 36 straight games. Since the first loss in the 2000-01 season, Carleton has reeled off nine consecutive victories…in the first 30 games of the series, the closest the Knights had come to beating Concordia was 12 points…the most points scored by a team in a single game in the series is 113. The Cobbers beat the Knights 113-45 back in the 1985-86 season.

THE INSIDE SCOOP

CONCORDIA (2-2 MIAC/4-3)

IN A LIKE A LION

The New Year has come in like a lion for the Cobbers and everyone else in the F-M area. Red River citizens were greeted by temperatures that nose-dived into the negative numbers, and Concordia will be welcomed into 2005 by the two-time defending MIAC champions. Added to the pressure will be that it is the first home game since November 22. Jessica Rahman’s crew will have to get over the tough Knight defense as well as getting used to playing in front of the Cobber Nation all over again.

ONE OF A KIND

Before tonight’s game, Concordia will honor point guard Mandy Pearson who became the first player in the history of women’s basketball in the MIAC to record 500 assists and 1,000 points in a career (and one of only a handful in the entire NCAA Division III). She topped both milestones in the Cobbers’ 77-76 overtime win over St. Mary’s. Pearson became the 19th player in program history to top the 1,000-point barrier and the fourth player to go over the 500-assist marker. She now has 1,053 career points. She currently stands 15th on the all-time list and should move into 14th position tonight by surpassing Leah Sonstelie, who scored 1,061 points. She has 512 assists and needs 87 more helpers to move into third place on the all-time list. For the record, Concordia boasts the most 1,000-point scorers and 500-assist performers in the history of the MIAC.

HAGEMAN HOT STREAK

Concordia freshman Melanie Hageman has started her collegiate career by scoring in double figures in six of the team’s first seven games. She put up 29 points in her first game in maroon and gold and is shooting 56.3% from the field. In the Whitworth Tournament over Christmas break, she averaged 11 points and six rebounds and was named to the All-Tournament Team (along with teammate Mandy Pearson). She currently is second on the team in scoring (13.4 ppg) and rebounding (5.3 rpg). She has also shown the uncanny ability to get to the free throw line. She trails only Pearson in free throws taken. She has put 36 free throw attempts in seven games, converting on 22.

THE INSIDE SCOOP

CARLETON COLLEGE (6-0 MIAC/6-3)

SENSATIONAL SIX PACK

After dropping their first three games of the season, Carleton has rattled off six straight games and finds themselves ranked 25th in the latest national poll. During their three-game skid to start the year, the Knights fell out of the national rankings for the first time in 36 consecutive weeks. Like all good teams that go through adversity, Carleton righted the ship in time for MIAC play and is the only undefeated team left in conference play in the league. On Wednesday, they used a stifling defense to shut down previously unbeaten Gustavus 62-41. In their last three league games against the top three teams from the 2003-04 season (Gustavus, St. Mary’s and St. Ben’s), they have pounded their opponents by an average margin of 17 points.

COBBER KILLER

The number one thorn in Concordia’s side last season was Carleton junior forward Megan Vig. Vig has turned into the Cobber killer in her brief two-year career at Carleton. Last season she averaged 22 points and 6.67 rebounds against Concordia. In the game at Concordia, Vig scored 28 points, 22 in the second half to lead the Knight comeback and keep their winning streak over the Cobbers intact. Vig currently leads the Knights in scoring (15.0), rebounding (7.8), shots taken and 3-point shots taken. The Gameday staff thinks she should take it easy on the Cobbers considering her brother Paul graduated from Concordia in the spring!

WE’RE BACK

If two of the five starters from Carleton look familiar to Cobber fans, it is because Katie and Beth Freeman were also a part of the Knights’ volleyball team. The Freeman sisters helped Carleton to the regular season title in volleyball but were beaten by the Cobbers in the MIAC Tournament championship. Both sisters were an integral part of the volleyball run at the title and are doing the same for the basketball team. We’re sorry to see them leave Carleton (but are grateful their time has come to an end) and wish them the best of luck after graduation.

Cobber Women’s Basketball Coach

Jessica Rahman

Jessica Rahman is entering her

second season as head women's

basketball coach in 2004-05. In

her first season in 2003-04, she

guided Concordia to a 21-7 mark

and brought the Cobbers all the

way to the championship game of the MIAC tournament.

Rahman, formerly Jessica Beachy, was a four-time All-American standout at Concordia and helped the Cobbers win the national championship in the 1987-88 season. She is the school's all-time leading scorer and was inducted into the Concordia Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998.

After graduating magna cum laude from Concordia in 1988, Rahman earned an M.A. degree in education from North Dakota State University in 1998.

In her four years at Concordia, she helped the Cobbers win 96 of the 118 games in which she played. In 1997-88 the Lady Cobbers went 29-2, captured their third-consecutive MIAC title, and won the NCAA Championship in Concordia's Memorial Auditorium. She was again named All-MIAC and a first team All-American. She was also honored with the NCAA Division III Player of the Year in 1988. To go along with her Player of the Year award, she was given the Honda Award as the NCAA Division III Female Athlete of the Year and earned one of the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships.

Rahman ended her Concordia career with 2,101 points - 17.8 points per game. She still holds the MIAC record for career points with 1,491 - 17.8 points per game.

Concordia Women’s Basketball Preview

You’ll have to excuse Concordia head coach Jessica Rahman and the rest of the coaching staff if they feel like a college student in the mid 1990’s getting ready to watch the final episode of Beverly Hills 90210. Rahman is about to have the best seat in the house for the final episode of Mandy Pearson 56562.

Mandy Pearson (Sr., Watkins, Minn.), last year’s MIAC MVP, is back for her senior season in 2004-05 and has already garnered preseason All-American honors by . Last year Pearson finished the season by being ranked in the top 35 in the nation in three different statistical categories. She was eighth in assists per game (6.3), 29th in steals per game (3.5) and 32nd in free throw percentage (82.3%). She led the MIAC in assists (6.50 apg), was second in steals (3.73 spg) and 12th in overall scoring (13.7 ppg). She was also third in free throw percentage and fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.21). She has been gaining confidence and gathering accolades since she burst onto the scene as a freshman and was named to the MIAC All-First Year Team and led the nation in assists. The 2004-05 campaign should looks to be a coronation for one of the best players ever to suit up in a Cobber uniform.

Pearson will not be the only star in this year’s season-long episode. Last year Concordia had their best record since the 1990-91 season. The team finished with a 21-7 mark and made it all the way to the MIAC playoff championship game, a first in school history. Concordia also set a school record for biggest improvement in one season. The Cobbers improved a full seven games from the 2002-03 season.

Joining Pearson in the backcourt will be 2003-04 All-First Year Team member Annie Keeley (So., Grafton, N.D.). Keeley was second on the team in scoring last year with a 10.9 points per game average. She also finished the year as the team’s third leading rebounder (4.0 rpg), was ranked 14th in the league in 3-point baskets made and 15th in offensive rebounds (46). Keely also factored among the top players in the league in scoring, 3-point field goal percentage and assists. Her year of experience will help make the Cobber offense multi-dimensional and will help take some of the scoring load off Pearson and shooting guard Jamie Visness (Sr., Hallock, Minn.).

If the inside players can band together and help out the starring members of the Cobber perimeter, then Rahman could be looking at another award-winning season of Cobber women’s basketball.

Carleton Women’s Basketball Coach

Tammy Metcalf-Filzen

In only seven seasons at the helm of Carleton's women's basketball program, Tammy Metcalf-Filzen has established herself and Carleton's program as one of the elite in all of NCAA Division III. She's been named the MIAC's Coach of the Year three times as well as the Russell Athletic/WBCA Region Coach of the Year three years. Under her watch the Knights have been consistently ranked in the nation's top 10 and have won 20 or more games in each of the last four seasons.

Metcalf-Filzen, also a professor of physical education, athletics and recreation at Carleton, has presided over one of the most remarkable turnarounds in all of NCAA Division III women's basketball. When she took over prior to the 1997-98 season, the Knights had a program winning percentage of .323. Since Metcalf-Filzen assumed the head coaching position, the program has winning percentage of .714 and has posted four consecutive 20-win seasons. Metcalf-Filzen has led Carleton to a 50-7 record over the last two seasons, 74-13 over the last three and 96-18 over the last four.

Her family includes her husband, Dave, and five children, Zachary, Taylor, Rikki, Kyle and Jessie.

Carleton Women’s Basketball Preview – courtesy of the Carleton SID

Four consecutive MIAC Playoff titles, two straight conference titles and more than 90 victories over the last four seasons mark an unprecedented feat in the history of Carleton sports. Never ones to settle, though, the Knights’ women’s basketball teams hopes for more of the same heading into the 2004-05 season, where they now stand 12th in the top 25 preseason poll and 20th in the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA coaches’ poll. The Knights’ returning starters are headlined by two-time All-MIAC pick and preseason All-American Megan Vig (Northfield, Minn.). The junior firmly established herself as one of the MIAC’s elite players last season, scoring 16.0 points and pulling down 7.1 rebounds per game, leading the team in both categories for the second straight season. She was named All-America honorable mention by DIII News, a regional finalist for All-America accolades by the WBCA and all-region by .

The Knights will hardly by a one-woman show, however, with seniors Beth Freeman (Richfield, Minn.), Katie Freeman (Richfield, Minn.) and Kristi Colbenson (Rushford, Minn./Rushford-Peterson) returning as starters. Beth Freeman was an All-MIAC pick in 2003-04, averaging 12.3 points and 6.4 rebounds while connecting on 56.9 percent of her field-goal attempts, tops among returning MIAC players. Colbenson, meanwhile, posted 9.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in her first season as a starter. Katie Freeman, also a first-year starter last year, established herself as perhaps the best on-ball defender in the conference, scoring 8.0 points and adding 3.9 rebounds and a team-best 3.0 assists per game. Carleton, with nearly its entire starting line-up returning and the national rankings, figures to have the bulls-eye squarely on its back as one of the favorites in the MIAC race. This will differ from last season when the Knights lost four starters and weren’t considered one of the front-runners.
