Dear Fire Chief,

Recent Changes in the Rules for Water Systems (Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation Rule #1200-5-1-.17 (18)) in the State of Tennessee require a water system to use a specific method for the color coding of certain fire hydrants.  These hydrants will have the bonnet/cap of the hydrant color coded as follows:

|Class C |Red |less than 500gpm |

|Class D |Black bonnet or covering |temporarily out of service |

Fire Department pumper trucks are prohibited from connecting to hydrants that are Class C.  These hydrants may be used to fill the booster tanks on any fire apparatus by using the water system’s available pressure only (fire pumps shall not be engaged during refill operations from a Class C hydrant).

Utilities are now required under a new law passed by the Tennessee General Assembly in 2007, that requires the utility to account for water used.  In order for our utility to comply, we must require that you report on a monthly basis; when, where and an estimate of how much water was used.

We have attached a sample water usage form for your use.  This will help us in tracking the information.

For more information, you may contact me at (xxx) xxx-xxxx.  I appreciate your help regarding this matter.

Thank you for your attention in this matter,
