13 Colonies Study Guide
How it all began:
Colonist began arriving from several different Countries: England, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Germany. In 1607, Jamestown (now Virginia) became the first permanent settlement to be recognized as a Colony. In 1620 the Pilgrims arrived and set up a settlement in Plymouth which later became the Colony of Massachusetts. The Colonies were then broken into 3 basic regions based upon their location, farming and chief products.
THE New England Colonies
Massachusetts New Hampshire Rhode Island Connecticut
The New England Colonies were known for farming and fishing. Boston served as a major city for trading. The soil was rocky and the climate not good for farming.
Religion: Puritan in Massachusetts, religious freedom in Roger William’s colony of Rhode Island
Products: Ships, Lumber (wood), Fish, rum
THE Middle Colonies
New York Pennsylvania New Jersey Delaware
The Middle Colonies had lots of farms and factories. Many types of grains, like wheat, were grown by the Middle Colonies. Factory workers made iron products (like guns) and barrels. The soil and climate were good for farming.
Religions: Quaker and Catholic
Crops/Products: Wheat, iron goods- guns
THE Southern Colonies
Maryland Virginia North Carolina South Carolina Georgia
The Southern Colonies were famous for their farming. The soil was fertile and the growing season was long. Many profitable crops included rice, greens and tobacco.
Religion: Baptist, religion not as important
Crops: Tobacco, Indigo, Rice
