Installing Active Directory without dcpromo !!I was going to install Active directory on windows 8 Server and I noticed right away dcpromo no longer worked. Instead I was greeted with a message: The Active Directory Domain Services Installation Wizard is relocated in Server managerdcpromo gives way to a new wizard… I ended up having to figure out how to use the new Server Manager to install the Active Directory services, then clicked around and I finally found a way to configure the first domain controller. The new wizard looks different from what I am used to for a decade plus years of installing Active Directory, but it seems to be a nice upgrade. Click on the Server Manager icon available by default on task barThe dashboard walks you through initial configuration of the server itself, as well as that of other servers without the GUI. The first configuration step is to configure the server's roles and install additional features to support them. By default, the server is configured with a single role called file and storage servicesClick on Manage, select Add Role and Features from the pulled down optionsAfter launching the wizard, it prompts to select whether the server will be configured based on roles and features, or scenario-based. The only scenario-based configuration in the beta version is for configuring the server to support remote desktop services either through virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) or session virtualization. Since I am going to install Active Directory domain controller, I will follow the roles and features route.Next, select a target server or virtual drive as an installation target. Selecting virtual drive means you can create an image that can be used by a virtual machine running in Hyper-V to provide the role being configured, so you can partition multiple Windows network services into several virtual machines running on the same server. In my case, I am just targeting the local machine for configuration.Next, the wizard provides a check-list of roles to assign to the selected server. Clicking on each role provides a brief definition of the service. Since Active Directory domain Service requires a DNS server to be installed on the network, I am going to select DNS Server role first and then select Active Directory Domain Services.I am making this server the Active Directory domain controller, so I am going to select Active Directory Domain Services here and move on.The feature selection screen is much the same as the roles screenClick next twice on DNS service and Active directory Domain Service confirmation screenClick install to install the selected roles.Close the Wizard once the selected roles are installed successfully. Unlike the earlier version of AD DS configuration wizard, your server will not be part of the domain until you finish the post deployment configuration.Click on the notification button to continue with Post-deployment configuration. Select Promote this server to a domain controller. Even though the Active directory administration tools are listed in the application list, the server will not functions as Domain Controller till you finish the post deployment configuration. Select add a new forest and give Root domain name.New forest and Domain functional level available now “Windows Server 8 Beta”Provide DS restore mode password and click next to continueClick next Click next Click next Click next Server will reboot automaticallyYour Windows 8 Domain Controller is ready to serve. ................
