FAME: The Second “F” Word

Achievement and Recognition

Charles Schulz, the creator of the 'Peanuts' comic strip, once asked his readers to consider the following two sets of questions.

His intent was not that you actually answer the questions. His intent was that you just read the questions straight through and

ponder them.

Below is the first set of questions. See how you do on this set:

1. Name the four or five wealthiest people in the world.

2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.

3. Name the last six winners of the Miss America pageant.

4. Name four people who have won a Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.

5. Name the last three Academy Award winners for best actor.

Here is the second set. See how you do on these:

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.

2. Name three friends who helped you through a difficult time.

3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.

4. Think of five people with whom you enjoy spending time.

5. Think of a few people who made you feel appreciated and special.

Was the second set of questions easier to answer?

Schulz’s point:

While the individuals in the first set are top achievers (in fact, the best in their fields) their memory fades. The applause

dies. Awards tarnish. Such achievements are quickly forgotten.

The most important and unforgettable achievements and recognitions are personal ones . . . the individual achievements in the

second list. The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the

most awards. The most significant and famous people in the whole world are simply the ones who cared the most about you.
