Frequently Asked Questions – Adjustments and Billing Changes Adjustments to Accounts (Refunds)The UMass System?issued a press release?on March 27, 2020, confirming that adjustments will be made for spring housing, dining and parking charges. Please review the information below about billing and other adjustments to your student account due to the impact of the coronavirus.What charges are being adjusted?Residential students that have not lived on campus since March 23 and commuting students will receive an adjustment for meal and parking costs (if applicable) on their accounts for the spring 2020 semester. Residential students that remained in campus housing after March 23 will have their meal plan adjustment reduced for each week they remained on campus, no adjustment will be provided to students still living on campus.Campus administration is advocating strongly with the housing owner for a similar adjustment to housing costs for residential students.What do I have to do to have my account adjusted?No action is required by any of our students. The University is already working on reviewing student accounts and the adjustments will be made as timely as possible. We expect that students will be notified of a change to their account on or before April 17, 2020.How is my adjustment calculated?This adjustment represents a pro-rated credit for 9 weeks (March 23rd through May 22nd) for each charge assessed to your account. Once this adjustment is completed, students can review their account to see the adjusted balance due or the credit available.Will I receive a “cash” refund?Many factors go into these adjustments:If you currently have a balance due, your account may reflect a new balance due or may show a credit balance.If your bill was paid with financial aid or a scholarship, the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office will review your account and make any required adjustments, based on the type of aid received.If your account still has a balance due after adjustments, you will continue to receive a billing statement.If you are on a payment plan, any refunded amount will be spread over remaining payments.If your account has a credit balance, the University will issue a refund check or through direct deposit.When will I receive my refund?The University remains focused on the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff as we help our student's transition to remote learning so they can successfully complete their semester. The process for reviewing dining and parking charges is underway, and we expect that students will be notified of a change to their account on or before April 17, 2020. Any payments resulting will be received within 2 weeks of notification.How do I get my refund?Once adjustments are finalized on or before April 17, 2020, the University will start to issue refunds to students with a credit balance.? All students are encouraged to sign up for Direct Deposit via WISER?to ensure receipt of a credit balance refund as quickly as possible. Any credit balance refunds sent via paper check will be mailed to the student’s permanent address displayed in WISER and students should allow 15-20 days to receive a paper check once processed. Students are urged to ensure that the permanent addresses on WISER and are current and accurate. Students who still owe a balance to the University will continue to receive a billing statement but with appropriate credit adjustment.Will my Financial Aid change?There is a possibility your financial aid may change. This section will be updated as more information becomes available during the next week.What happens to my financial hold?Once adjustments are finalized on or before April 17, 2020, the University will review spring account balances and will remove holds as applicable. Students can monitor their accounts by logging into WISER to review current account information including holds and to-do items.Billing ChangesWhat changes is the campus making to help with my tuition and fee costs during this time?Billing Cycle: The next bill will still be issued on April 7th as planned Late Fees for Spring Bills: Late fees will be waived until May 1, 2020Financial Holds: The threshold for a financial hold on accounts will increase immediately from $500 to $1,000. Holds will be removed with payment to below $1,000 or the establishment of a payment plan.Payment Plans: Existing payment plans will be extended as follows with no additional fee: The April 1st payment will be delayed until May 1st. Remaining installments will be increased from two to three and are due on May 1st, June 1st, and July 1st. Enrollment into a payment plan is being offered to students not currently enrolled in a plan through April 24th. The $47 plan fee is being waived and balances owed the university will be due in three equal payments also due May 1st, June 1st and July 1st.For those accounts impacted by meal plan, parking or other refunds, installment amounts should be adjusted after the refunds are processed on or before April 17th.?Payment plan payment amounts will not be recalculated by the Bursar’s Office. Students should adjust their payment amounts to 1/3 of total owed AFTER April 17th to ensure the correct installment amounts to satisfy their new balance after any refunds are applied.What’s the best way to ask more questions?Though many offices across campus are physically closed, staff members are available to help you.
