Literacy Charts

These are the stations we use at Literacy time. We are able to take ownership and choose which activities would help us meet our literacy goals. We have two weeks before the rotation starts again.

Remember which ones are ‘must dos’

~ R.E.D. ~

All the usual rules for R.E.D. apply. You can use anywhere quiet in the room to do R.E.D.

← check my Reading Plan for what I wish to read and start reading.

← use my reading log to keep track of my reading.

~ Lit Circle ~

I can…

← sign up for a lit circle meeting and choose what role I’d like to take on this week.

← check the Lit Circle Role Descriptions so I know what I have to do before the circle meeting.

← read this week’s assigned text..

← complete any before-meeting preparation.

~ Oral Reading ~

I can…

← choose a short passage of text to read (about half a page).

← check the Oral Reading Rubric and think about which skills I want to focus on.

← practise reading the text a few times.

← use the recording equipment to record myself reading the text.

← listen back and use the rubric to assess myself.

← paste the rubric into my reading log.

~ Poetry ~

I can…

← choose a poem and read.

← take a deeper look.

Use the ‘Types and Forms of Poetry’ and the ‘Devices Poets Use’ booklets to work out what type of poetry I’m reading and to discover some of the devices the poet has used effectively.

← pick one of the following to do:

• Draw a picture to illustrate the poem

• Rehearse the poem to recite in front of the class.

• Complete a ‘Talk to the Author’ response.

• Write my own poem based on this idea.

← continue an unfinished draft.

← check my Writing Plan for genres and topics I’ve chosen to do.

~ Writing ~ Editing ~

← use a ruler to guide my re-reading.

← edit on three levels using my blue proof reading guide:

1. Message level - does my text ‘read well’?

2. Sentence level - punctuation?

3. Word level - read it backwards and look for spelling to fix

← flick through the Rich Writing book to find ways of improving my writing.

← ask a friend to proof read my writing down at the talking table.

← choose an edited piece of writing to publish.

← decide what would be the best way to publish the writing. Here are some options:
