Levantine Arabic Study Guide for Assignment 9

Five College Center for the Study of World Languages – Spoken Arabic Courses

Study guide version: August 2014

Unit III – “A Room with a Bath” – Functions D and E

Work through all the textbook materials related to Functions D and E. Listen to the audio. Practice repeating after the speakers. Put down your book and try to use the phrases and repeat the dialog without looking at your textbook. Do the exercises on your own. Check yourself using the answer key. Do the exercises orally as much as possible.

How to practice the material for this assignment

Practicing Function D, numbers and prices:

• Practice saying various prices. Make sure you know what the primary units of currency are for the various countries where Levantine is spoken. Make yourself flashcards with prices written in Arabic and then practice saying them in Levantine.

• Play “The Price is Right” with yourself and try to guess the prices of various high end items that you see in your daily life (especially things that also appear in hotels – towels, irons, pillows, hair dryers, etc. – use the vocabulary that you learned last week). To really practice, guess the price of the hair dryer, but since you need to practice larger numbers (at least that’s what it appears to me), try creating sentences such as “Does that hair dryer cost 23 lire? No it costs 223 lire!” Use the “thousands” and “millions” expressions also,

• To practice the “X lire per day” expressions on p. 113, go back to the hotels that you chose last week. Do a little math and figure out how much things would cost per day, per week, etc. Be prepared to use these expressions in role plays.

• Research prices for plane tickets from the U.S. to a city where Levantine is spoken. Be prepared to explain to the class in Levantine what the prices for various flights are. Tell when the various flight options depart and arrive (day/time).

Practicing Function E, ordinal numbers and more:

• Review the vocabulary for ordinal numbers and be sure to note the masculine and feminine variants. Then in the same way that you are seeing everything this week in terms of cost, also notice things in terms of order and make yourself say it to yourself (or aloud – that’s even better).

• Watch the students coming in or our of your classroom, dorm, bus – that’s the 1st backpack, that’s the 7th book, that’s the 19th girl, that’s the 38th sandwich . . . . . Even making a simple sentence with each word and each ordinal is good practice – The 2nd cup of tea is sweet. This has the added benefit of making you remember the gender of all the nouns you are trying to use, so if you don’t remember, look it up. If you aren’t getting enough practice, create little arguments between your imaginary selves. “Did you eat the 4th cookie? No I ate the 3rd cookie. Then where is the 5th cookie . . .”

• Practice giving your address, phone number, and e-mail in the U.S. using Levantine. Practice giving the same information for family members and friends (real or imaginary).

• Addresses – Say the address of every place you are this week but alter it give it a common Levantine name. If you don’t know street names, choose a Leventine-speaking city and adopt 7 of the street names to use all week.

More preparation for conversation session

• Be prepared to write down prices announced by your conversation partner.

• Be prepared to read prices written on the board by your conversation partner.

• Be prepared to give your name, address and phone number (real or imaginary).

• Be prepared to role play arriving at a hotel with a very particular list of amenities you would prefer to have. Your conversation partner will play the role of the clerk. S/he will have some of the amenities, but not all. S/he will try to convince you that you want the room anyway because it is a very nice room.

• Be prepared to discuss what floor your room is on or which floor you would prefer your room to be on.
