Luz del Rosario

for School Trustee, Ward 6 and 11, Dufferin-Peel Region

The residents in her neighborhood in Mississauga is thrilled to learn of the candidacy of Luz del Rosario as Trustee for Ward 6 and 11 in the English Separate District School Board of the Dufferin-Peel region. Ward 6 covers the area North of Dundas to Britannia Road and West of Mavis to Credit River. Ward 11 covers the north of Britannia Road to Highway 407, and westward from Mclaughlin to Erin Mills Parkway. Luz is a resident of Ward 6 for over twenty years and has been a member of the Parent-Teachers Association of the primary school her two children attended.

Having just completed her terms as chair of the Carassauga Festival Inc. in Mississauga, Luz del Rosario is very much motivated to vent her energy into other form of service in the community. During her four years of organizing the annual Carassauga festival, she has built quite a reputation of unrelenting in her promoting of the cultural diversity of the people in this vibrant city. She has coached many different ethnic groups to form their respective cultural pavilions and to share the beauty of their national heritage during the annual Carassauga festival. For the most part of the year, Luz directed Carassauga to lead its pavilion members to partner with other large community and service organizations. These include the civic programs of the City Hall, The crime awareness programs of Peel Regional Police, fundraising programs of Yee Hong Foundation, Vita Manor for parenting women, and others. Her theme, message and direction are clear - “Unity in Diversity in Community Service”. For her civic contributions, Luz was named as Mississauga’s 2006 citizen of the year and was given the Gordon S. Shipp Memorial Award in a formal ceremony at the city hall of Mississauga.

On youth development - Luz’s interest in children became passionate when she got involved with Culture Philippines of Ontario (CPO) and decided to become more active in community service. Culture Philippines of Ontario is a non-profit organization teaching children Filipino songs, music and folk dances. Luz felt strongly about connecting children in the community with their culture and giving them a fun experience in the process. During her term as president of Culture, Luz called Walt Disney World and arranged to send a busload of CPO performers to a dance workshop at Disney. The children also got the opportunity to perform in Downtown Disney and Epcot during those Disney trips in 2002 and 2004. In order to reach out to the mainstream community in Toronto, Luz also negotiated with Paramount of Canada’s Wonderland and set up an annual Filipino Day celebration at this huge fun park. This proved to be a huge success as it provided the stage where the youths of the community can come out with their talents in singing, acting and dancing.

Luz’ unrelenting attitude and genuine desire to serve the people in her community is so contagious that she has inspired many, otherwise complacent, parents and citizens to become committed to community service to work just as hard as she does.

Luz was full of energy and is actively involved in many other service areas. She was a committee member in the Mississauga Arts Review Taskforce. She is president-elect of the Catholic Women’s League at St. Joseph’s Parish. She is a member of the grant review team of the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

Luz’ personal life is equally admirable. She maintains a caring relationship with all the people she comes to know. She always finds time to be with her family, friends, and keeps in touch with leaders and volunteers in the many organizations she was associated with. She is a role model. A person that we Filipinos should be proud of. Let us help Luz get elected as Trustee. Call all those you know whose vote will count on Election Day on November 13, 2006.
