Cooler days are on the horizon, but we still have a lot of things to participate in before the end of the year.Several new things to think about, night flying “season” is approaching. With shorter days, night flying is a great way to extend your flying day. And the indoor fly ins will begin. We need nominations for next year’s club officers. We will be having our club picnic on Saturday, September 28th. Bring out your aircraft for a great day of flying and fun. There will be a BBQ brawl between Michael Lick and Ethan Ingram (both good cooks in their own right). Don’t let this opportunity slip by: eat, fly, and be merry! We will be having our last workday at the field on Saturday, October 12th. I would like for everyone to assemble on the field at 10 am sharp. The more help we have, the faster the jobs get done and we can start flying.Just a reminder (blatant plug!) the Halloween Fun Fly will be offering a $50 prize for the weirdest aircraft with a successful flight. Now is your time to put something interesting together and test it before October. We are also going to host the JCRC New Year’s Day fly in. Bring a pot- luck snack and a good warm coat and enjoy the first flying day of the year!Be safe, have fun, and clear skies!Anthony HallJCRC President Next Meeting is: Tuesday, 24th of September at 6:45 PM At the Tri-Cities Model Airport.Next Year’s Event Schedule:Now is the time to start thinking about next year’s club sponsored events. This is your club, if you are interested in a particular event, we will do it. Participation is the key to enjoying a great day of fun, flying, and friends. This is why we have a club.______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________JCRC Community Service: On Saturday August 24, 2013, JCRC hosted Boy Scout Troop #387 for their Aviation Merit Badge Class.Wow, what a day! We had excellent flying conditions; clear skies and very light breezes. The Scouts had a great time. Between the classes and actual hands on flying, we older folk had a good time too! Various aircraft on display, scale biplanes to jets.JCRC Community Service (continued): Class time, learning about aircraft. First Person Viewing (FPV), real time telemetry in action. JCRC Community Service (continued): Scouts building their own aircraft. Getting ready for the first flight.Planes flying all over the field! Each scout received a balsa free flight airplane to build to remind them of the day at the airfield. These scouts represent our areas creative thinkers and possibly the next generation of pilots (full scale or RC).Many of the scouts got the chance for multiple buddy box flights and they all enjoyed the time at our field. It just goes to show you what we can do for others when we work together. I wish to extend my personal thanks to all who volunteered to help and make this a success.______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Safety and Lipo Batteries: by Mike PenceLet me preface this by saying that I always either fly out my batteries, or put them in storage mode. The battery in question is a 6s 5000mah 65-130c Turnigy Nano-Tech. It is less than 6 months old, with no puffing whatsoever. It had?roughly 15-20 flights on it. ?The basic story is as follows: I charged the battery at the field, did a check, and sent the plane up. About 2 minutes or less into the flight, I lost power to the motor, so I called dead stick and leveled it out for an approach.About 10 seconds or so later it lost power to the servos as well and went straight into the ground from about 50ft. The plane was a loss and the battery?was ejected and on?fire. There were a few scorch marks inside the plane,?which leads me to believe that for whatever reason, the battery shorted out inside the plane and caught fire pre-crash. There was no reason for it to malfunction that I can think of, other than just bad luck. The before photo The after photo, ouch! Crash scene investigations in progress. This picture was made a few seconds after a crash. Luckily the Li-Po battery was ejected from the plane. I suppose the postscript is that the battery set some of the grass in the field on fire, and we ran out with an empty extinguisher. People should really tell someone if they use important things like that. It could have been a big problem. Luckily, it wasn't.?Mike Pence______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Humor: More Things to say after a CRASH: from RC Universe website. Here are some good ones which I have said myself ... After the plane hit like a lawn dart I yelled, "DEADSTICK ... LANDING ... ON THE RUNWAY ... PROPSTRIKE ... RADIO FAILURE!!!" "It wasn't my fault! See that little plastic pilot hanging out the cockpit" HE WAS FLYING ... NOT ME!!" “I didn't like that one anyway.” “Free wood, offer only today. Get it while it lasts.” “Reverse! Reverse!” *While eyeballing the local public* “You’re not helpingggg...!” “I told that shrew not to mess with me! This is what he gets for daring me.” "Why didn’t anyone tell me only helicopters can hover inverted??" Other Photos: “Old planes never die, they just fade away….” Our new welcome sign.Eddie is going to add a brass plate to commemorate the date.______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Mowing Schedule:Remember, if you are scheduled to mow and cannot make it, please contact Rolland Boles ASAP.September4J.
