EPE 660 Applications Journal Week 2

instructions for pulling data from textbook CD into minitab

-----------------------

Go to My Computer in the Start menu and select the folder entitled “Mendenhall Data”. Within this folder, you will find a separate folder for each book chapter. Once you have opened a chapter folder, you will see the files for the various data sets. They are saved as .dat files.

You may want to view the file you wish to analyze in Notepad before loading it into your statistics software. (Note the number of columns included in the data set so you can verify this later.) If you double click on a file, it will open automatically in Notepad or a similar program. The data will look something like this:

1 5.2 220

2 5.5 227

3 6.0 259

4 5.9 210

5 5.8 224

To pull data into MINITAB, you can either…

Copy the data and paste into MINITAB

In Notepad:

Click Edit in the menu bar ( Select All ( Edit ( Copy

In Minitab:

1. Click File ( New ( Minitab Worksheet

2. Place the cursor in cell 1,C1 (this is actually the third row and second column in the spreadsheet)

3. Go to Edit ( Paste Cells. A dialogue box will appear asking how to interpret spaces. Select Use spaces as delimiters.

Open the data directly in MINITAB

1. Click File on the menu bar ( Other Files ( Import Special Text.

2. Specify the number of variables in the data set by entering “C1, C2, C3,” etc. in the Store data in column(s) box. Make sure you have the same number of “C” values (column numbers) as columns in the data file. Then click OK.

3. Specify the disk drive and folder that contains the external data file, then click OK.

Once the data have been pulled into Minitab, you will probably want to label the columns (the variable names appear in the examples in your textbook.) To label the columns, left click once in the cell above the column of data you wish to label, and type the name.

Finally, save the worksheet. Go to File ( Save Current Worksheet As. In the dialogue box that appears, select the folder where you wish to save the file by clicking on the arrow to the right of the Save in dropdown box. To the right of File Name, enter a name, then click the Save button.
