Harmful Materials in Electronics
Used electronics, such as computers, televisions, and cell phones contain potentially dangerous chemicals and heavy metals and should not be placed in the regular trash.
Television and computer monitors contain cathode ray tubes (CRTs), which
have high concentrations of lead.
Circuit boards contain heavy metals such as cadmium, mercury, and chromium.
An estimated 70% of the overall toxic materials in landfills is comprised of
electronic waste.
The problem with cell phones... The average life span of a cell phone is
only 18 months. About half a billion obsolete and unused
cell phones could end up in our landfills. Translation...this would release roughly
312,900 pounds of lead into landfills.
Donate your cell phone today! Many organizations and domestic violence prevention facilities accept cell phone donations. Working cell phones can be used to dial 911, even without an active telephone account. Consider donating to this local facility.
