----ENERGY SAVINGS TIPS----

Each summer the City receives a number of calls from our customers complaining about high electric utility bills. But hot summer days can be less costly if you follow these simple steps to improve your home’s energy efficiency:

● Install a programmable thermostat. Set it to 78 degrees when you are home and 85 degrees when you are away.

● Use ceiling fans

● Keep drapes and blinds closed to block sunlight

● Unplug unused appliances and electronics

● Repair broken window panes, caulk and seal cracks, and repair leaky duct work.

● Install or increase your ceiling insulation

● Replace your air filters once per month in the summer

●Keep your outside air conditioner unit free from leaves and debris for proper circulation

Call the Department of Public Utilities at 366-5058 for additional summer energy savings tips.

GARBAGE COLLECTION

----------Route Schedule----------

Help keep Abbeville beautiful and prevent animals from scattering your garbage by following a few simple rules.

1. Make sure that your garbage is properly bagged in the garbage bags that the City provides twice each year in March and September.

2. Do not put you bags of garbage at the curb for collection prior to 5:00 am.

3. Place your garbage at the curb for collection on the correct day. Call the Public Works Department at 366-4636 if you are not sure which day your garbage is to be collected.

Failure to properly dispose of garbage and placing it at the curb for collection on the wrong day is a violation of City Ordinance Section 16, and can subject you to a fine.

-----HYDRANT FLUSHING-----

The Public Utilities Department will be conducting hydrant flushing and testing June 21 – August 21. This may cause some discoloration of your tap water, so check your water before washing clothes or cooking.

First Baptist Church of Ivy Gap

September 10 - 18 at the Historic Opera House

During WWII, six women gather at the church to roll bandages and plan the church's 75th anniversary. Overseeing things is Edith, the pastor's wise-cracking wife who dispenses Red Cross smocks and witty repartee to Luby, whose son is fighting in the Pacific; Mae Ellen, the church's rebellious organist who wants to quit but hasn't the courage; Olene, who dreams of a career in Hollywood; Sammy, a shy newcomer with a secret; and Vera, an influential Baptist with a secret of her own. When Luby learns her son has been wounded, she confounds the others by blaming the vulnerable Sammy.

Twenty-five years later, our "First Baptist Six" reunite. Back to reconcile with Luby - whose son died of his wounds - is Sammy, whose own son is now in Vietnam; and Olene, whose flashy show business career will set the town on its ear. There to welcome them are Vera, her secret still safe; Mae Ellen, still rebellious and still looking for an escape; and Edith, whose biggest challenge isn't the church's upcoming centennial but revelations that shake relationships formed over a quarter of a century. With humor and pathos, these six very different women find comfort, forgiveness and redemption in each other.
