Ecological SuccessionIntroductionRead the passage below:Ecological communities tend to change in distinct, predictable ways as time goes by. This process is called succession. Imagine a fresh lava flow. In a relatively short time, the barren rock becomes colonized by lichens and mosses, which form soil by breaking down the rock, thus paving the way for grasses and herbs to grow. As the soil is further deepened and enriched with organic matter, conditions become favorable for establishment of shrubs and small trees. These in turn are eventually replaced by larger trees and so on, until at some point a community becomes established that perpetuates itself indefinitely. This community, called a climax community, persists until it is destroyed by a natural disaster or by changes in the environment. Those communities that succeed each are called seral communities. The establishment of a community of organisms in a previously barren area is called primary succession. Primary succession occurs in sand dunes, on volcanoes, in the aftermath of glaciers or landslides, and in newly created lakes. Organisms that successfully become established in previously uninhabited areas are called pioneer species.
