• The SILK ROAD was several trade routes connecting China and Europe. Merchants traveled to buy silk, spices, and other goods.

• In 1405, Admiral Zheng He set sail with hundreds of ships and thousands of sailors.

• The first West African trading kingdom—GHANA

o Ghana was rich in gold, but did not have enough salt.

o The salt was used to keep food from spoiling.

o Mansa Musa- traveled to Mecca, the most holy Muslim city in Arabia.

LESSON 2 – NEW IDEAS IN EUROPE

• Europe in the 1300s and 1400s = a period of time that was called Renaissance

▪ Renaissance—means “rebirth” in learning and knowledge.

▪ This meant people were excited to learn new things!

• During the Renaissance time period, technology in Europe became really important. The changes in technology allowed the people to use tools to do things better and more rapidly.

• In 1454, Johannes Gutenburg developed the printing press.

o The printing press made it possible to print many copies quickly.

• Navigation tools helped European exploration by making navigation easier and more accurate.

• Europeans sailors learned about the compass from North Africans.

o A compass is an instrument with a magnetic needle that always points north.

• The Chinese invention GUN POWDER helped the Europeans travel and defend their ships.

• The Portuguese named the tip of Africa the Cape of Good Hope.
