Auckland Central itself was initially created ahead of the 1887 election, but then amalgamated into a larger Auckland electorate for the 1890 election. However it emerged in its own right for the 1907 election and has been in continuous existence since.Boundary changes were made in 2014 due to projected population growth. These saw Westmere and most of Grey Lynn transferred to the Mt Albert electorate. The western boundary is now largely defined by Richmond Rd, while the eastern boundary now includes Auckland Hospital and the Domain. The southern boundary now includes parts of Grafton and Newton. There have been no changes to the boundary for the 2020 election.Notable MPs who represented the electorate in its early forms included Sir John Logan Campbell, who was described by his contemporaries as “the father of Auckland.” Sir George Grey, the 11th Premier (Prime Minister) of New Zealand, also held the electorate (as Auckland Central) from 1887 to 1890, and then as Auckland City from 1893 to 1895. The Auckland suburb of Grey Lynn (parts of which are now within Auckland Central) is named after him.The longest-serving MPs to have held Auckland Central were William Parry (Labour) from 1919 to 1946, and Richard Prebble (Labour) from 1975 to 1993. Between 1919 and 2008 MPs from the Labour Party usually won the electorate; the exception over this period was the Alliance’s Sandra Lee who became the first woman to hold the electorate in 1993. The 2008 election saw National’s Nikki Kaye win the electorate for the party for the first time. Kaye has held the seat since then and is the third woman to have held Auckland Central following Judith Tizard (Labour) from 1996 to 2008.Auckland Central's demographic profile in the 2018 Census reveals an electorate of highly educated young adults, with relatively few children or elderly. Of all the general electorates in New Zealand, it has the highest proportion of people aged 25-29 (17.4%), the highest proportion of people aged 30-34 (12.3%), the lowest proportions of all age groups under 15, and the lowest proportions of those aged 45-54 and those over age 80 (1.3%). Of people aged 15 and over in the electorate, 26.8% have a Bachelor's degree as their highest qualification, and 9.4% a Master's degree – both the second-highest proportions among the 65 general electorates.Almost one third (32.4%) of households were one person households, and 14.4% of households had income of $20,000 or less, both the highest proportion of any general electorate. Over half (55.3%) of the population were born overseas, and 5.1% said that they identified with a Middle Eastern, Latin American, or African ethnicity – proportions that saw Auckland Central rank first (highest) on these measures.Election resultsElection results (2017)The winning candidate in the 2017 election, Nikki Kaye (National Party), captured a plurality (45.3%) of the 29,170 valid electorate votes cast for candidates in the Auckland Central electorate. The seat was previously won in 2014 by Nikki Kaye (National Party) with a margin of 600. The National Party also captured a plurality (39.2%) of the party votes in Auckland Central, down 5.7 percentage points on its party vote share in 2014. Turnout (total votes cast as a proportion of enrolled electors) in 2017 was 79.9%.2017 General election results – electorate candidate votesAuckland CentralCandidateValid VotesShare (%)KAYE, Nikki (NAT)13,19845.25WHITE, Helen Ione (LAB)11,61739.83ROCHE, Denise (GP)2,8389.73HAKA, Mika (TOP)6812.33EDWARDS, Frank (NZF)5781.98VAN VELDEN, Brooke (ACT)1510.52JONES, Leslie (CF)550.19GREENFIELD, Stephen (CNSP)520.18Total Valid Votes29,170100Total Votes Cast29,376100.71Winning Candidate: KAYE, Nikki - margin 1581For interpretation of abbreviations, see Glossary.2014 General election results – electorate candidate votesAuckland CentralCandidateValid VotesShare (%)KAYE, Nikki (NAT)12,49445.84ARDERN, Jacinda (LAB)11,89443.63ROCHE, Denise (GP)2,0807.63PIERARD, Miriam (IP)2700.99MONAHAN, Regan (CNSP)2580.95KOVALENKO, Dasha (ACT)1930.71WHITMORE, Peter (CLI)500.18OSMASTON, Jordan (MFP)190.07Total Valid Votes27,258100Total Votes Cast28,693105.26Winning Candidate: KAYE, Nikki - margin 600For interpretation of abbreviations, see Glossary.2011 General election results – electorate candidate votesAuckland CentralCandidateValid VotesShare (%)KAYE, Nikki (NAT)15,03845.39ARDERN, Jacinda (LAB)14,32143.23ROCHE, Denise (GP)2,9038.76DAVIES, Allen (NZF)4121.24GREENFIELD, Stephen (CNSP)2380.72SEYMOUR, David (ACT)1490.45VAN DEN HEUVEL, Anthony Joseph (HR)680.21Total Valid Votes33,129100Total Votes Cast34,761104.93Winning Candidate: KAYE, Nikki - majority 717For interpretation of abbreviations, see Glossary.General election results – party vote 2011-2017Auckland CentralPartyValid VotesShare (%)Valid VotesShare (%)Valid VotesShare (%)201120142017National Party14,44742.2412,65244.9311,77339.23Labour Party8,59025.116,10121.6711,34037.79Green Party7,79722.796,24222.174,17013.9New Zealand First Party1,4034.11,4595.181,1653.88The Opportunities Party (TOP)9443.15ACT New Zealand4041.183291.173171.06Māori Party5621.641580.561230.41Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party1460.43850.3710.24Conservative2800.824861.73290.1United Future750.22530.19190.06Ban1080100.04120.04Mana2370.69120.04New Zealand People's Party100.03Internet Party100.03NZ Outdoors Party80.03Democrats for Social Credit2020.5930.0140.01Internet Mana5531.96The Civilian Party170.06NZ Independent Coalition70.02Focus New Zealand20.01Libertarianz530.15Alliance100.03Total Votes Cast34,761101.6228,693101.930,070100.21Total Valid Votes34,20610028,15710030,007100Voter enrolment and turnout 2014 and 2017Auckland CentralNZAuckland CentralNZ20142017Voting Age Population (VAP)*50,5303,391,10071,4403,569,830Electors on General Roll (EGR)36,5292,900,47638,0683,046,216Electors on Māori Roll1,405239,9411,331251,793Total Enrolled**37,9343,140,41739,3993,298,009Total Votes Cast by EGR (TVC)28,6932,290,15030,4332,462,199% VAP Enrolled75935592Turnout (TVC as % EGR)79798081*Estimated population statistics as at: June 2014; June 2017. ** Electoral Enrolment Centre statistics as at September 2014; and Electoral Commission enrolment statistics as at September 2017.PeopleThis section has a variety of information about people living in the electorate. It also has information about residential building consents issued. The census distinguishes between dwellings, households, and families. A dwelling refers to the physical structure. A household is either one person who usually lives alone, or two or more people who usually live together. A family comprises a couple with or without children or one parent and their children. There are two tables describing homeownership. They differ in measuring ownership at the individual or the household level. A household may own their dwelling but not all people within that household share in the ownership.Households, 2018 Censusfor households in occupied private dwellingsAuckland Central200620132018Total households20,95225,55428,215Annual average intercensal growth rate (%)…2.92.0Growth rate rank…213New Zealand growth rate (%)…0.91.3Dwelling occupancy status, 2018 Censusfor all private dwellings?Auckland CentralNZOccupancy statusno.%rank%Occupied private dwellings28,76183.25889.7Total unoccupied private dwellings5,82016.8810.3 – Residents away3,2379.455.3 – Empty dwellings2,5867.585.1Total private dwellings34,581100.0?100.0Private dwellings under construction1,557???Number of bedrooms, 2018 Censusfor occupied private dwellings?Auckland CentralNZNumber of bedroomsno.%rank%One bedroom9,87934.416.2Two bedrooms10,69837.2119.1Three bedrooms5,44518.96543.5Four bedrooms1,9956.96523.9Five or more bedrooms7232.5657.3Total stated28,743100.0?100.0Not elsewhere included18???Total28,761???Household composition, 2018 Censusfor households in occupied private dwellings?Auckland CentralNZHousehold compositionNumberPercentRankPercentOne-family household12,92450.86568.6Two-family household3331.3633.3Three or more family household150.1560.2Other multi-person household3,92715.425.1One-person household8,22632.4122.7Total stated25,425100.0?100.0Household composition unidentifiable2,793???Total28,215???Number of usually residents, 2018 Censusfor households in occupied private dwellings?Auckland CentralNZNumber of usually residentsno.%rank%One usual resident8,22632.3122.7Two usual residents10,07139.6533.2Three usual residents3,62414.25616.4Four usual residents2,3589.36515.6Five usual residents7923.1657.1Six usual residents2340.9652.9Seven usual residents780.3651.1Eight or more usual residents690.3630.9Total stated25,455100.0?100.0Number of usual residents unidentifiable2,760???Total28,215???Individual home ownership, 2018 Censusfor the population aged 15+?Auckland CentralNZOwnership statusno.%rank%Own or partly own9,72620.36540.8Hold in a family trust5,07010.63710.9Do not own and do not hold in a family trust33,16269.1348.2Total stated47,958100.0?100.0Not elsewhere included11,589???Total59,544???Tenure of household, 2018 Censusfor households in occupied private dwellings?Auckland CentralNZTenureno.%rank%Dwelling owned or partly owned7,59326.96551.3Dwelling held in a family trust3,39912.14113.3Dwelling not owned / held in a family trust17,20861.0235.5Total stated28,200100.0?100.0Not elsewhere included15???Total28,215???Sector of landlord, 2018 Censusfor households in rented occupied private dwellings?Auckland CentralNZSector of landlordno.%rank%Private person, trust, or business15,41493.6583.5Local authority or city council420.3612.1Housing New Zealand Corporation8315.04812.0Iwi, hapū, or Māori land trust60.0440.3Other community housing provider1110.7481.2Other government630.4430.9Total stated16,470100.0?100.0Not elsewhere included21???Total16,488???Weekly rent paid, 2018 Censusfor households in rented occupied private dwellings?Auckland CentralNZWeekly rent paidno.%rank%Under $1005553.4566.5$100 -
