"Santa’s List of Good Deeds"

1. Lending a Hand to Clean up HK’s Coast

• On 30 October, 34 Club staff joined the Hong Kong International Coastal Clean-up and helped restore the beauty of our coastal area. They collected 11 bagfuls of waste debris which weighed 275 kg in total. Most typical “Trash-ures” they found at the Wu Kai Sha beach included glass bottles, construction materials, BBQ forks and a lost earring!

2. Recycling Scheme: Electronic Devices

• The Club has received a total of 250 old electronic devices, ranging from home electronics, personal electronic gadgets to computer peripherals which have been donated to Caritas-HK Computer Workshop for recycling and onward donation to the needy.

3. Recycling Scheme: Books

• Over 1,300 books have been collected from Club staff and are being resold at the Green Action Carnival. All proceeds will be used to purchase carbon credits in support of green projects. The unsold books will be donated to Crossroads Foundation for distributing to the needy.

4. Recycling Scheme: Clothes

• Club staff have donated altogether nearly a tonne of clothes which will be passed on to the Salvation Army.

5. B-Y-O-Cutlery

• To minimise consumption of raw materials and alleviate landfill pressures, the Club’s staff canteen and Telebet Department have ceased to supply disposable cutlery, saving around 5,000 plastic items in total. Staff have instead been encouraged to use durable cutlery, or their own personal set of reusable cutlery, given out by the Club as souvenirs.

6. Green Tours

• Over 100 Club staff and their family members have joined Green Tours to Mai Po Nature Reserve and the Club's own Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course. Under the guidance of Mai Po staff, they visited the gei wai (fish ponds), red forest, bat boxes, bird houses and the Mai Po Marshes Wildlife Education Centre. Those who joined the Kau Sai Chau Eco-Tour had a chance to visit the golf course's state-of-the-art desalination plant, built to allow the use of seawater for watering the greens, and see the Club's solar golf carts and solar-powered ferries in action. Kau Sai Chau is the world's first golf course to equip its entire golf cart fleet with solar-power canopies.

7. Enhancing Green Awareness in Talks

• Several hundred Club staff have joined four "Carbon Care - Lasting Care" talks to learn ways of leading a low carbon and sustainable lifestyle. Participants enjoyed low carbon lunch boxes and were encouraged to bring their own cutlery and water bottles.

8. Low Carbon Meals

• The Club's eat@OMP staff restaurants at both Happy Valley and Sha Tin launched low carbon meals in November, which have met a very favourable response from staff.

9. Dress Green, Think Green: My-Green-Tee Day

• Staff were given green apples as souvenirs to encourage them to live green by dressing green.

10. "Go Green, and Save!" Green Bill Competition

• Club staff participated in the Green Bill Competition, with the champion saving over 66% on the units of electricity consumed on her home bill.
