NATURES GARDEN COLD PROCESS

[Pages:108] KEY

NG%= The amount of fragrance

that Natures Garden suggests that you use in your cp soap; taking into consideration IFRA maximum usage rates.

IFRA usage rates are considered the maximum percentage of a specific fragrance that can be used in a specific application.

IFRA category #9 is the category for soap.

There are a few fragrances that NG% is listed as not body safe, but the IFRA chart will say it is safe at a small percentage. We did this as an extra step of safety for our customers because the fragrance contains enough spice to burn the skin.

Comprehensive IFRA charts are provided for every fragrance we sell. You will find these on each fragrance page. Please be advised that IFRA values can change when new RIFM guidelines are implemented.

*The soap testing results provided were performed by our staff using strict controls; the same recipe used each time (unless otherwise stated).

We do not accept any responsibility for our test results differing from yours, or for the quality of any products you create with Natures Garden products. Testing is still the responsibility of the customer.

Test results can be affected by soap recipes, water discount rate, the age of your fixed oils/butters/fragrance, and soaping temperatures.

We are human, so we do make mistakes. If you notice any test results that completely do not correlate with your testing results, please let us know so we can put the fragrance oil through another soap test in house.*

NATURES GARDEN COLD PROCESS SOAP TESTING RECIPE

This is the soap recipe Natures Garden uses when testing our fragrances in cold process soap. We have decided to use this particular recipe because it allows us to see if a particular fragrance oil will allow for swirling. In our soap testing, we soap when our lye solution is 100F (unless otherwise stated). Please note that soaping when your lye solution is at room temperature will likely increase the amount of time it will take to bring your soap to trace.

When we make this recipe, we bring the soap mixture (soaping oils and lye water solution) to an emulsified state using a stick blender, add fragrance oil (when testing, we use 1 oz. of fragrance oil per pound of soap as long as the IFRA chart for the specific fragrance allows for it), then observe how the fragrance oil affects trace. A stick blender is used to incorporate the fragrance oil into the emulsified soap mixture.

Please note that hand mixing instead of stick blending may increase the amount of time it will take to bring your soap to trace. We record any acceleration, separation, ricing, or seizing in our notes. We pour our soap mixture into silicone molds, and allow it to set for a minimum of 24 hours before removing from the molds. After 24 hours, we remove the soap from the molds, slice the soap, and allow them to cure at room temperature for around 4 weeks. This allows us to see if the soap will discolor, and if the soap has any oily residue that did not reabsorb back into the soap. We record any discoloration, final separation, and how well the fragrance "sticks" in the cured soap.

Here is the testing recipe we use: This recipe makes 1 lb. of soap

Water: 144 Grams NaOH lye: 53 Grams Sodium Lactate: 8 Grams (Added to cooled lye solution)

Apricot Kernel Oil: 26 Grams Shea Butter: 49 Grams Castor Oil: 14 Grams Sunflower Oil: 63 Grams Mango Butter: 53 Grams Fragrance Oil: 29 Grams: (depending on IFRA %) Palm Oil: 57 Grams Coconut Oil 76: 113 Grams

Note: It is important to understand that your results may differ from our results depending on the soap recipe you use. When using our fragrance oils in soap, it is your responsibility to conduct your own testing.
