An Introduction to South Ribble
The Borough of South Ribble was created in 1974 following local government reorganisation. It covers an area of 11,240 hectares, approx 44 square miles and in the 2001 census had a population of 103,867.
The main town is Leyland but South Ribble also includes Bamber Bridge, Coupe Green, Gregson Lane, Higher Walton, Hutton, Little Hoole, Longton, Lostock Hall, Much Hoole, Nab’s Head, New Longton, Penwortham, Samlesbury, Walmer Bridge, Walton Summit and Walton-le-dale.

The highest point in the Borough is Hoolster Hill @ 124m above mean sea level to the east of Nab’s Head. The lowest points are the tidal sands in the far west of the Borough, i.e. Hutton Sands and Longton Sands, which are between mean high water and mean low water. Lancashire’s greatest river, the Ribble, is the northern boundary between South Ribble and Preston.

● The Cuerdale Hoard is the greatest Viking silver treasure found outside Russia. In 1840 a
timber chest containing over 8,600 items of silver coins and bullion weighing over 40 kilograms was discovered near Cuerdale Hall, near Walton-le-dale. The hoard included over 7,000 Viking, Saxon, Arab and Byzantine coins dating from ~ AD900 and some of the coins are on display in the Harris Museum in Preston.
● Major attractions include the British Commercial Vehicle Museum, Cuerden Valley Park, Samlesbury Hall, South Ribble Museum and Exhibition Centre and Worden Park and Craft Centre.

As you can see from the above, half of our ecological footprint comes from our homes. By getting cavity wall insulation, insulating your loft, using an energy efficient boiler, choosing low energy lighting and turning down radiator thermostats etc we can all move towards a one planet lifestyle and save lots of money too. By growing your own herbs and vegetables, choosing locally produced and organic food and drink, eating less meat, not wasting food, using left-overs, composting etc we can move towards a one planet lifestyle and be healthier too.
Transport is the third biggest factor in our ecological footprints. By walking and cycling, using public transport, reducing car miles, sharing cars, switching to sustainable fuels and flying less we can move towards a one planet lifestyle and be fitter and healthier too.
Goods are the fourth and final category over which we have control of in determining the size of our ecological footprints. By choosing energy efficient goods and buying recycled products we can move towards a one planet lifestyle and save money too.
Peak Oil and the transition to a sustainable lifestyle
The amount of oil we consume in one year has taken 300 Million years to form. Peak oil refers to the point when the maximum amount of oil that can be extracted globally is reached. Thereafter, production will tail off as remaining reserves become more difficult and more expensive to harvest. Many of the services that we currently take for granted, such as cheap flights, cheap imports and global distribution of food, will be radically affected.
We are consuming oil at an ever increasing rate and we may already have gone past peak oil production, hence oil is going to run out and we need to start reducing our consumption and becoming less and less dependent upon oil and oil-based products, including petrol and plastics. Transition Towns are a way of moving away from our dependency on oil, whilst maintaining and improving our quality of life. See

This guide attempts to list the places that make or bake things, refurbish or repair goods, hire things – from cars/minibuses to tools etc., sell items that you can use to make your own products, sell used or second-hand goods, sell local and/or organic produce etc. It also contains additional environmental information and includes details of environmental organisations and how you can get involved (see volunteering).

AEROSOLS:
Avoid buying aerosols as making them uses lots of energy and the gases can damage the environment. Choose Pump Sprays instead.
DON’T puncture, burn or crush old aerosols. They can’t be recycled so you can’t put them in your recycling box or recycling banks but you can dispose of them in your non-recyclable waste (grey bins).
ALLOTMENTS:
If you have your own garden then why not try growing your own veg and if you have space try planting some fruit trees. You can make your own composting from your veg peelings, tea bags, cardboard, grass mowings, tree leaves and garden prunings etc.
If you don’t have a garden then ask family, friends or neighbours if they have any land that you could use or look on the landshare website (as seen on River Cottage Autumn), which seeks to link people who want to grow their own food to space where they can grow it, see there are lots of growers, helpers and people with spare land in South Ribble.
Local Authorities have a statutory requirement to provide allotments for the public and South Ribble Borough Council owns several sites, which are administered by allotment societies. The sites and contact details for the organizations that manage them are as follows:

There are long waiting lists for allotments on these sites as plots do not become available often. If you would like to add your name to the waiting list for one of the sites above, please contact the relevant person or organization who will take your details.
There are also a number of other allotment sites within the borough, which are run by private allotment associations.
The Yorkshire village of TODMORDEN launched their “Incredible Edible” project by growing veg in spare plots of land such as raised beds, in roundabouts, flower beds, hanging baskets etc. Following its launch in 2009 the local council, Calderdale, began to respond to the momentum, giving permission to plant 500 fruit trees around the local playing fields and looking for plots to turn into new allotments.
What a great example of people power :o) Can we do the same in South Ribble? The answer is YES, because in March 2010 South Ribble’s first neighbourhood food-growing initiative was launched. A derelict piece of land on Bannister Drive, Leyland, has been transformed into "The Giant Veggie Patch", which will encourage and enable members of the community to work together to produce their own food.

However you grow your own please don’t use any peat or peat products and avoid oil-based fertilisers and pesticides by growing the natural way – organically.
ALUMINIUM:
The extraction of Bauxite, the raw material of Aluminium, is a polluting process and the production of new cans uses a lot of energy.
You can put ALL your cans, including steel food cans (please wash or rinse them out), clean aluminium foil and containers into your kerbside collection (green box), into any recycling containers (see Recycling Points) or at the recycling centre on Flensburg Way, Farington Moss.

Avoid the disposable BBQ’s that contain charcoal from non FSC-certified sources and those that have a petrochemical starting paper or need lighter fluid to get going. It’s better to buy a portable and sturdy BBQ that you can use for many years, or make your own.
Buy locally-produced charcoal from the Cuerden Valley Park Ranger Service (see CHARCOAL PRODUCERS) or choose British-made charcoal that is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
Get your BBQ going by lighting cardboard, scrunched-up newspaper or Eco-firelighters (see FIRELIGHTERS).

BATTERIES:
It takes far more energy to make a battery than we get back out of them, so it’s better to use mains electricity or use rechargeable batteries.
Battery chargers and rechargeable batteries are widely available.
Many chargers still use power when they are plugged in and an estimated 65% of people in Lancashire leave their chargers plugged in and switched on, wasting an estimated £266,000 a year – what a waste of money.
BIODIESEL:
Biofuels, i.e. derived from organic matter, are not a new idea. The Model T Ford, first produced in 1908, was originally designed to use ethanol, while the first Diesel engine ran on peanut oil in 1912. However, it wasn’t long before petroleum-based fuels, which could be produced more cheaply, took over. Now, as the price of fossil fuels is rising, biofuels are being used again.
You can produce up to 2,500 litres of biodiesel tax free in the UK per year, enough to run a small car for 16,000 miles. Biodiesel can be made from cooking fat from chip shops and restaurants or from recycled oils and should cost less than 40 pence per litre!

BIODIVERSITY: Also see NATURE RESERVES
Biodiversity is the variety of life on planet earth, i.e. all the plants and animals and the habitat types upon which they depend, from mountain and moorland, amongst trees and woodland, through grassland and heathland, in water and marshes, along the coastline and under the oceans and seas.
People are not separate from biodiversity but we are part of it and dependent upon plants and animals for the food we eat, most medicines and all natural materials including wood, cotton, silk, wool, cork, coir, rubber etc.
The biodiversity of South Ribble can be summarised in terms of habitats, species and sites.
Taking habitats first, the only comprehensive survey of habitat types in the Borough was a Phase 1 habitat survey, which is a standard system of classifying the land according to around 90 habitat types including different types of woodland, grassland, heath, bog, coastal, artificial habitats and boundary features. Lancashire was surveyed, District by District between 1985 and 1992, with South Ribble being surveyed in 1990. The total amount of semi-natural habitat in South Ribble was 1,255 hectares, or 11.2% of the Borough and 9,985 hectares of artificial habitat, or 88.8% of the Borough. The largest amounts of semi-natural habitat in South Ribble are grassland, saltmarsh/intertidal and woodland/scrub.

In terms of species, the UK supports over 50,000 species of which less than 1,500 have been recorded in South Ribble to date. The number of species found in South Ribble includes 1,105 plants, 206 invertebrates, 111 birds, 34 fungi & lichens, 18 mammals, 11 fish and eight amphibians. However, some of these groups have been under-recorded, especially invertebrates, fungi, mosses and liverworts, and the total list will be considerably more.
Notable species include Great Crested Newt, bats, Brown Hare and Water Vole.
The Ribble Estuary supports over 5% of the British population of the following birds: Bar-tailed Godwit (37.9%) and Ruff (9.1%), and over 5% of the European population of Knot (19.7%), Wigeon (6.8%), Sanderling (6.5%), Grey Plover (6.2%) and Pink-footed Geese (5.2%). Mammals include

Finally the best places to see flora and fauna, which can be statutorily-designated sites or non-statutory sites. Statutory sites can be designated at the international, national or local level. International sites include Ramsar sites, Special Protection Areas and Special Areas for Conservation. National sites include National Nature Reserves (NNRs) and Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Local sites include Local Nature Reserves (LNRs).
The Ribble Estuary is the only site of international importance for wildlife in South Ribble. It is listed under the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance signed at Ramsar in Iran in 1971, and is a Special Protection Area (SPA). The Ribble Estuary is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), which comprises 9,375 hectares of intertidal mudflats & saltmarsh designated for its intertidal habitats and birds. The Ribble Marshes are also a National Nature Reserve (NNR) and cover 4,520 hectares of intertidal and saltmarsh habitats at the mouth of the Ribble Estuary. The Ribble Marshes are the only NNR in South Ribble.

Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) are the best examples of our natural heritage of wildlife habitats, geological features and landforms. They are designated by Natural England for reasons of significant biological or geological interest. Apart from the Ribble Estuary, the only other SSSIs in South Ribble are the 1.85 ha privately-owned Beeston Brook Pasture near Coupe Green, which is one of the few surviving unimproved species-rich pastures in this part of Lancashire but it isn’t accessible to the public, and the Darwen River Section, west of Samlesbury Bottoms, which is of geological interest.
There are two locally-designated sites in South Ribble: Longton Brickcroft Local Nature Reserve (LNR), designated by South Ribble Borough Council and Preston Junction LNR, designated by Lancashire County Council.

Non-statutory sites include ancient woodland and Local Wildlife Sites, called Biological Heritage Sites (BHS) in Lancashire. As of 2009 there were 66 BHS in South Ribble covering an area of 537 hectares. There are 25 ancient woodlands over two hectares in South Ribble, amounting to 166 hectares and these are also recognised as Biological Heritage Sites. Ancient woodlands are thought to have been continuously wooded since AD1600, but many will be descended from the original woodland cover that colonised the land following the retreat of the ice age around 10,000 years ago. One of the most accessible ancient woodlands in the Borough is Dog Kennel Wood between Bamber Bridge and Walton-le-dale, which is owned by the Woodland Trust and has a good network of footpaths.

Energy from the sun passes through the atmosphere to warm the earth's surface. At the same time energy is also being released back through the atmosphere so that we experience a relatively constant temperature.
Some gases in the atmosphere (known as 'greenhouse gases') are able to absorb the energy that would otherwise pass through the atmosphere. If the balance of gases is altered so is the temperature at the earth's surface.
Over the last 200 years human activities have resulted in an increase in gases such as carbon dioxide. This has been linked with a rise in global temperatures.
Carbon dioxide is released to the atmosphere every time we burn fuels such as petrol, diesel, gas, coal, oil and aviation fuel. The main sectors responsible for carbon dioxide are transport, the domestic sector (e.g. through heating and lighting our homes) and industry.

We can all act now to ensure a sustainable future, not only for ourselves, but for generations to come.
There are many easy steps you can take, but to start with, you can calculate your carbon footprint and access a unique action plan that's tailored to your lifestyle.
What is South Ribble Borough Council doing?
In 2009 the Council unveiled its Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy which sets out long term objectives and actions for the next three years.
This strategy includes a commitment to address climate change with actions including:
• Implementing an energy action plan for council managed buildings
• Meeting our commitments under the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change
• Developing a green travel plan for the council
• Raising awareness among the council's own workforce through our network of green champions
• Carrying out energy saving and other environmental campaigns
What can we do?
There are lots of things that we all can do to reduce our own environmental impact. You could:
• Walk or cycle instead of using your car for short journeys
• Choose a UK holiday instead of flying long distances
• Buy locally produced food
• Be energy aware and make sure you switch off all unnecessary lights and equipment in your home. Many electronic items use a significant amount of energy when they are in standby mode
• Defrost your fridge and freezer regularly so that they work as efficiently as possible.
• Only wash when you have a full load and use the lowest temperature wash
• Buy energy efficient light bulbs. They can last up to 12 times longer than ordinary bulbs and replacing just one can reduce your lighting costs by up to £100 over the lifetime of the bulb.
• Air dry clothes whenever you can
• Choose appliances with a high energy efficiency rating. Visit the Energy Saving Trust's website for more information, a list of recommended appliances and lots more tips on how to save energy.

The Stop Climate Chaos Coalition is the UK’s largest group of people dedicated to action on climate change and limiting its impact on the world’s poorest communities. More than100 organisations are involved, from environment and development charities to unions, faith, community and women's groups.

A Forest School is an innovative educational approach to outdoor play and learning. The philosophy of Forest Schools is to encourage and inspire individuals of any age through positive outdoor experiences. By participating in engaging, motivating and achievable tasks and activities in a woodland environment each participant has an opportunity to develop intrinsic motivation, sound emotional and social skills.
Forest Schools has demonstrated success with children of all ages who visit the same local woodlands on a regular basis and through play, who have the opportunity to learn about the natural environment, how to handle risks and most importantly to use their own initiative to solve problems and co-operate with others. GRANTS:
The Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund (ALSF) started in 2002 and uses money from the Aggregates Levy (a tax on extracting stone) to address the impacts of aggregate extraction on the environment and local communities. There are 16 active aggregate extractors occupying close to 1,000 hectares of land across Lancashire, of which two quarries affect residents in South Ribble, i.e. Lydiate Lane Quarry in Farington and Clayton Hall Quarry off Dawson Lane, Leyland. Community Design is an initiative that has been established by the County Council’s Environmental Projects Team to provide a design service to help take ideas from concept to implementation. A professional designer is commissioned based on their particular expertise on behalf of a community group, and works in consultation with them to produce the plans needed to get a project moving. The Lancashire Environment Fund (LEF) is a unique partnership between the County Council’s Environmental Projects Team and the LEF team. The fund offers a range of complementary resources to community groups striving to put their ideas into action. The Lancashire Small Sites Reclamation Programme (LSSRP) is an ambitious programme of land reclamation and improvement utilising a fund provided by the Northwest Regional Development Agency, but it has now allocated all its recourses and it is unlikely that new funding will become available in the near future. However if you are thinking of developing a project that involves improvements to derelict land, please contact the Environmental Projects Team, as above, and they may be able to help though another initiative. The Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) is jointly funded by the Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development. It was launched in 2008 and will run until 2013. Natural England's Accessible Natural Greenspace Standard (ANGSt) provides a set of benchmarks for ensuring access to places near to where people live. These standards recommend that people living in towns and cities should have:
● an accessible natural greenspace of at least two hectares in size, no more than 300 metres (five minutes walk) from home
● at least one accessible 20 hectare site within two kilometres of home
● one accessible 100 hectare site within five kilometres of home
● one accessible 500 hectare site within ten kilometres of home
● one hectare of statutory Local Nature Reserves per thousand population.
In some areas, this will be hard to achieve in the short term, but it should be a long-term aim for all local authorities, within their Greenspace Strategies.
Whilst an audit of the natural greenspace was carried out for South Ribble as part of their open space audit (published 2009), unfortunately the natural greenspace standards haven’t been applied to the results.
With a population of 103,867 (2001 census), there should be 104 hectares (ha) of Local Nature Reserve (LNR) in the Borough. Two LNRs have been designated in South Ribble to date, i.e. Longton Brickcroft and Preston Junction, which amount to 31 ha, leaving a shortfall of 73 ha or 70%.

PEAT:
It takes around 1,000 years for 1 metre of peat to form so it is a kind of fossil fuel. When peat grows it takes Carbon out of the air and stores it in the ground – it is a carbon store. When peat is dried it oxidises and starts to release the carbon, thus contributing to climate change.

CANALS:
Although neither the Lancaster Canal nor the Leeds Liverpool Canal pass through the Borough, South Ribble provides the missing link between the two. The Millennium Link in Preston was opened in 2002 and connects the Lancaster canal to Savick Brook and at high tide canal boats can follow the River Ribble to the River Douglas and connect to the Rufford branch of the Leeds Liverpool Canal. On Sundays between Easter Sunday and the middle of October the DalesRail train stops at Lostock Hall (0911) and Bamber Bridge (0914) returning between 1828 and 2025 (check timetable for details, see timetables)

A 15 POINT ACTION PLAN TO BEING GREEN IN SOUTH RIBBLE:
ACTION 1: SLASH YOUR BILLS – GET INSULATED
The energy we use in our homes on heating, lighting and appliances produces over 25% of the carbon dioxide emissions in the UK, more than food & drink and transport. This means that every household can make a real difference in saving money and reducing carbon emissions.
Heating accounts for the majority of a home’s energy use and uninsulated houses lose 35% of their heat through the walls so if your house has cavity walls get cavity wall insulation. Uninsulated houses lose 25% of their heat through the roof so it makes sense to install loft insulation. Current Building Regulations require loft insulation to a depth of 270mm so try to match that for a start. If you live in South Ribble and are unemployed, retired or on any benefits, including child support, then you can get free cavity wall and loft insulation and an energy efficient boiler all free from South Ribble Borough Council. Even if you don’t receive benefits you qualify for a significant payment towards the costs. So what are you waiting for? Get insulated!
If you choose to install loft insulation yourself then you can choose Thermafleece, made from sheep’s wool, or Warmcell, made from shredded paper as more environmentally-friendly alternatives to the mineral fibre rockwool insulation.
Ten per cent of heat is lost through the windows so expensive double glazing is normally a lower priority.
ACTION 2: SLASH YOUR BILLS - BE ENERGY EFFICIENT
If you need a new product for the house, look for the Energy Saving Recommendation logo, which is shown on a wide range of ‘white goods’ such as fridges, freezers, washing machines and central-heating boilers. Appliances are rated on an energy scale of A++ to G with A++ being the most energy efficient and cheapest to run.

ACTION 3: SWITCH TO RENEWABLE ENERGY
Burning fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil to make electricity is a major source of carbon emissions and is unsustainable. Electricity can be generated from sustainable sources such as biomass, hydro (rivers, tides and waves), sunlight (solar) and wind. We can choose who supplies our electricity. Electricity supplied to our homes via the national grid comes from a mixture of sources. By buying electricity from certain companies, we can have an enormous influence on how much of that electricity is generated from renewable sources.
Some electricity supply companies only deal in electricity that is generated from 100% renewable sources. Three well-known ones are:

ACTION 4: GENERATE YOUR OWN ELECTRICITY OR HEATING
With the new Feed-in Tariffs (FITS) introduced by the government in 2010, you can get paid (41p per kW tax-free) to generate electricity from your own solar photo-voltaic system.

ACTION 5: TRAVEL GREEN
25% of CO2 emissions in the UK come from transport, yet a quarter of all journeys by car are less than 2 miles! Improve your health as well as reducing your carbon footprint by cycling or walking short distances and for longer journeys use public transport. If you are over 60 you can use your bus pass for free off-peak travel throughout South Ribble, Lancashire or anywhere else in England!
CYCLING:
National Cycle Network route 6 passes through South Ribble from Cuerden to Preston (Avenham Park) via Preston Junction LNR, the southern loop of the Lancashire Cycleway (Cycle Route 91) enters South Ribble at Shaw Brook (Runshaw College) and leaves along Dawson Lane between Leyland and Whittle-le-woods. BUYING A ‘NEW’ CAR:

Try not to buy a new car unless you absolutely have to. Be aware however, that newer vehicles pollute less and tend to be more environmentally efficient.
Buy as small as you can for your daily needs.
The fuel economy of similar-sized cars using the same type of fuel can vary by as much as 45%. The ETA’s Car Buyer’s Guide gives an accurate assessment of all cars on the market.
Choose the most fuel efficient model and investigate cars that use lower-emission fuels, in particular biodiesel from recycled oil. The vehicle certification authority (.uk) provides a listing of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for all new car models. It also identifies cars that use alternative fuel types such as electric, hybrid, biodiesel and LPG.
CAR CLUBS (PAY-AS-YOU-GO CARS): .uk
Although there are no Car Clubs in South Ribble or Lancashire at the moment, more are being set up around the UK. All costs are paid for by the daily or hourly charge and you don’t need to worry about tax, insurance, servicing or depreciation. There are Car Clubs in Manchester, Bentham and Hebden Bridge and Lancaster is currently looking into it.
DRIVE SMART:
If you do drive, you can reduce your CO2 emissions by using simple but ‘smart’ driving techniques to reduce fuel consumption. The top tips include:
Keep your tyre pressures topped up to the recommended levels
Remove the roof rack, if you have one, when its not needed
Drive as smoothly as you can
If you have a car try setting yourself a target to decrease your annual mileage and treat yourself to something with the money you have saved.

It isn’t always possible to travel by public transport but we can share our cars when we are travelling to the same destination, e.g. to work or shopping. Every journey shared saves money on running costs, reduces CO2 emissions by at least 50% and eases pressure on the roads. Talk to your family, friends, neighbours or colleagues about sharing car journeys. Alternatively there are several car sharing organisations that you can join – simply register your journey for free on one of these websites and the system will try to match you with a driver or a passenger, see below:

ACTION 6: TAKE A GREEN BREAK OR HOLIDAY (see HOLIDAYS in the A-Z)
The UK is one of the most beautiful places in the world and we have National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty on our doorsteps in Lancashire and Northern England. By taking a break or holiday in the UK instead of overseas contributes to the UK economy, helps keep people in jobs, saves CO2 emissions and helps you discover more about what’s on our doorstep.

ACTION 7: THE FOUR R’s - REDUCE, RE-USE, RECYCLE and REPAIR
Although South Ribble and Lancashire is achieving higher rates of recycling, most of our waste still ends up in landfill and its growing each year (tbc). This is a waste of precious resources and contributes to greenhouse gases building up in the atmosphere. Before you throw anything away, ask yourself, can it be re-used or recycled? Could anyone else use this?
The best way to reduce waste is not to create it in the first place. Many companies are reducing the amount of packaging but you can also choose products within little or no packaging, especially plastic wrapping, which is taken off and put straight into the bin.

Much of the food we buy has travelled hundred or even thousands of miles. Food transportation and packaging are major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. Try to buy local, organic and seasonal food whenever possible and support the local farmers, producers and shops.

For zero food miles, try growing some of your own fruit and veg in your garden, or rent an allotment (see ALLOTMENTS in the A-Z).

If you have space then plant a few fruit trees such as apple, cherry, pear or plum and is a great way of keeping some of the rarer varieties alive. Visit you local nursery and be inspired.

ACTION 10: FEED THE WORMS – GET A COMPOST BIN OR A WORMERY
About half a typical household bin is bulky heavy food waste, which has to be collected and transported to landfill, often a considerable distance from our homes. Food waste then decomposes to produce methane, or ‘landfill gas’, which is one of the main greenhouse gases.
South Ribble Borough Council collects garden waste, such as grass cuttings, hedge clippings and prunings in the brown bins and then composts it. An alternative if you have your own garden or allotment is to make your own compost.
If the Council collects food waste where you live then use it, otherwise you can buy a ‘Wormery’ and the worms break down food waste into a lovely fine and nutritious compost. Wormeries are available from (tbc).
ACTION 11: USE WATER WISELY
Although it may seem as though Lancashire isn’t short of water, freshwater is a very precious resource. Our tap water requires considerable amounts of energy as well as chemical treatment to clean and pump it through the mains.
The simple measures below can considerably reduce your water footprint:
● Take a shower instead of a bath, but avoid buying power showers as they can use up nearly as much water as having a bath.
● Don’t leaving taps running when you don’t need to
● Repair leaking or dripping taps
● Place a water hippo or brick into your cistern or replace it with a dual-flush alternative.
● Ask United Utilities to fit a water meter, if you don’t already have one, so that like gas and electricity, you pay for what you use.
● Install a water butt to harvest rainwater from your garage, extension, conservatory, car-port or even household roof and use the rainwater to water your garden, top up a pond or rinse your car. Rainwater is better for your plants than tap water because it contains more nutrients. More than one water butt can be connected to a single downpipe by using flexible hose connector kits.

ACTION 13: BE ETHICAL – SUPPORT ETHICAL COMPANIES
Look for products that have been ethically produced. Fairtrade is a good example but there are lots more. Use your purchasing power to make a difference as a consumer.
The Ethical Company Organisation (ECO) provides shoppers, NGO’s, ethical companies and government with clear and comparative information on thousands of companies and brands. Researchers compare ethical and Corporate Social Responsibility records in relation to environmental and human rights records, animal welfare and involvement in the arms trade. Building Schools for the Future (BSF) is the single biggest government investment in improving school buildings for over 50 years, aiming to rebuild or renew every secondary school in England over a 10-15 year period, see .uk
Eco-schools is an initiative where children work together to save electricity and water, recycle and reduce carbon emissions. Schools in England that have achieved an Eco-school Bronze or Silver Award have the opportunity to apply for funding to help them progress towards the prestigious Green Flag.
The Lancashire National Grid for Learning (LNGFL) can help schools and colleges with resources and teaching assistance in environmental and development subjects
The Global Renewables environmental education team works with Key Stage Two pupils looking at environmental issues and helps pupils to take action.
