TO WHAT EXTENT IS MEDIA VIOLENCE RELATED TO …

Please note the RTN on your record. Please read through my comments and suggestions as well as the original instructions that came with your exam. You only make one claim at most in your essay that relates to your thesis. The instructions state that you must make three claims. Write three statements in your own words that support your thesis. Use a direct quotation from the research literature to support your claim. Acknowledge that not everyone agrees with each claim and state their objections. Finally provide additional research to refute these objections and demonstrate that you are in fact correct. Also be sure that you follow proper APA format for your citations. I have included websites and comments to help you.For Topic 1, begin with your textbook’s brief discussion of this topic on pages 187–188. To get an introduction to the social learning theory of Albert Bandura and, in particular, his famous Bobo doll study, visit . Since Bandura’s work has been so influential in respect to linking media exposure to violent aggressive behavior, you can think of this as your “anchor site.” The Web site will also give you extensive list of references—should you wish to pursue any of them. To get a broader angle on this topic, visit . The most likely approach to this topic is taking a stand for or against Bandura’s work to support (or reject) the hypothesis that media violence is a causal factor in actual aggressive or violent behavior. In your introduction - discuss Bandura and his experiment. Make a clear statement of whether you agree with his concept of observational learning?(yes, no or partially because there are other factors than the media such as drugs and?inherited disease). If you said yes -? the next 3 paragraphs will start off with statements such as? - media such as video games cause children to become violent, it desensitizes people, etc. Remember you must find research to support this. Since this is an argumentative paper, you must acknowledge that there will be?some?who will not accept your proposition or statement. Then you must provide additional research that agrees with your original concept that helps those people change their mind.?If you said no - each of the next 3 paragraphs should start off with statement such as? - media such as video games do not cause children to become violent, in fact they are educational and can be used to relieve stress. Remember you must find research to support this. Since this is an argumentative paper, you must acknowledge that there will be?some?who will not accept your proposition or statement. Then you must provide additional research that agrees with your original concept that helps those people change their mind.?If you said partially, use the first statement but temper it with the idea that perhaps it shouldn't be used as an excuse for crime. Remember you must find research to support this. Since this is an argumentative paper, you must acknowledge that there will be?some?who will not accept your proposition or statement. Then you must provide additional research that agrees with your original concept that helps those people change their mind.?Add as conclusion that sums up you main concept – do not add new ideas. Now that you have chosen your topic you need to organize your thoughts into manageable sections: I. IntroductionA. Topic 1. Clearly state your topic for the reader. The topic I have chosen to discuss is the role that media violence plays in aggression in children specifically as related to Bandura’s experiments.2. Depending on the topic you chose, you may find it helpful to provide a brief definition of the main concept behind it. Give a very brief description of Bandura’s experiment.3. Now is the time you should voice your opinion on this topic – this is your thesis. Do you agree with the major tenets of the theories behind its concepts? If not, what do you disagree with? Is media fully to blame for all the violence in the world or is there some other force accountable? If you believe that is that is fine just make three claims related to this. If you are not sure, think about this - if the media is as much to blame as Bandura would like us to believe wouldn’t every child end up being an axe murderer?Organize the body of your paper in the following fashion: II. First claim related to your main thesis (remember you are eventually going to have at least 3 claims) The media is certainly has a presence in our lives and that of our children and no one would be foolish to claim that many television shows, movies, and video games are graphically violent. However, if as Bandura claims children are so impressionable wouldn’t more children be stabbing each other on the playground because they have become so desensitized to violence? OR As more and more children become desensitized to violence and killing, it is no wonder that violence on the playground and school bus has increased. . OR Media does have some effect on the level of violence but it should not be used as an excuse for a flawed personality or someone who has not learned the rules of society as there are many other factors that can lead to violence in a child/adolescent/adult.A. Statement explaining or adding to the claim B. Researched support for the statement 1. For this you need to provide at least one (1) direct quotation from one of the articles you have read for this project)III. Objections (remember you have to going to have at least 3 of these as well)You must acknowledge that not everyone will agree with what you are saying Refutation. For this you must supply additional research in the form of a quotation that supports your original claim and indicates to those who do not agree with you why they are incorrect in their thinkingYou will follow this pattern for the next several paragraphs (making a minimum of three to four claims related to your main topic, providing research that will support that point, acknowledging that not everyone will agree with your claim, and then providing additional research that will indicate why those who believe that way are incorrect). V. ConclusionA. Restatement of topicB. Restatement of main ideasPlease Note: This outline is only intended to help you organize your thoughts. You must submit an essay.Cite Your SourcesYou must use at least two (2) of the following sources: your textbook, Psychology and Your Life (required) and the assigned Internet source as noted in the study guide. In addition, you may use one additional reliable source (either a text or Internet article). To avoid plagiarism, you should know how to use these sources properly—by summarizing, paraphrasing, and using direct quotes for the material you use in your paper. To summarize material, rewrite it in your own words without looking at the original. Simply rely on your own memory of what you read. To paraphrase, rewrite the original but use some words from the source and refer to the original while rewriting. For direct quotes, use the author’s words exactly, enclosing them in quotation marks. No matter which method you use, you must give credit to the original source. The standard for research papers in the social sciences is American Psychological Association (APA) formatting. Use in-text citations in the following format to give credit to the original source: “As Whitmeyer (2000) stated, “Power is . . .” (p. 536).On your Works Consulted page, use the following format to reference your sources:Whitmeyer, J. Name: Amal Agha Student ID: ?70664756Submitted for course SSC 130Essentials of PsychologyDate: 23rd September 2013 Research project number 05020500The topic I have chosen to discuss is the role that media violence plays in aggression in children, specifically as related to Bandura’s experiments. Media has its own significance in the modern man’s life. Mass media including online media, Radioradio, Television television and Movies movies influence the viewers both positively and negatively. The most discussed and controversial one among the negative effects of media is the relation it has with the occurrence of actual violent behavior. Experts and the general public are concerned about the increasing violence in the society and its connection with the increasing exposure of violence in media. The correlation of violence in media to actual violent behavior in real life has been studied. Perhaps the most important name among them is that of the renowned psychologist Albert Bandura. Bandura explained this correlation through his social learning theory. He proposed that the risk of violent and aggressive behavior is more in viewers especially youths who are exposed to media violence. This paper supports Bandura’s hypothesis that media violence is a causal factor in actual aggressive or violent behavior. Now you should go one step further and construct a clear statement of opinion to serve as your thesis statement for this essay. The other thing missing from your intro is a reference to Bandura’s bobo doll experiment. The damaging effect of media on its viewers was a matter of concern even from a very earlier time in history. The ancient philosopher Plato was said to have had concerned concerns about the influence of plays on the youth of his times. Source? After the introduction of Televisiontelevision, around the 1960s, many studies were conducted to examine the influence of TV shows on its viewers. Many such studies used Bandura’s social learning theory as a basis. According to Bandura, human beings learn through the process of modeling. Children and adolescents learn aggressive behavior by observing others. Most of the present theories on ‘media effects’ reconfirm his proposal. Bandura demonstrated a famous experiment known as Bandura's Bobo Doll experiment to explain his theory of modeling of behavior. A video of a model brutally beating up a Bobo doll was shown to a group of children. Those children were put in a room with a similar Bobo doll and their actions were observed to examine whether they tended to mimic the behavior shown in the video. (" Media violence research.") . The researchers could note that more than 88 % of the children imitated the aggressive behavior. Furthermore, 40 % of the same children replicated the violent behavior even after eight months. (Delores Isom). The Bobo doll experiment is considered as a breakthrough in the field of media violence research studies and is still discussed and criticized extensively. Even with the many criticisms raised against conducting such an experiment, it could establish that children may mimic aggressive behaviors that they watch through the media. Bandura believed that Television television can be an influential factor in behavior modeling. Claim 1: Television and movies extensively show violence. Violence is mostly expressed as an acceptable behavior and the violent actions are presented heroically. The punishment aspect of violence is seldom shown in movies and the youth who are exposed to the violence develop a behavior of hostility within them. Such people are easily driven to violent acts when circumstances push them to. (Delores Isom). The correlation between media violence and actual aggressive behavior can be found in a number of facts. For example, the homicide rates in the United States reportedly increase after a heavy weight championship fight. Similarly, the movie ‘Taxi Driver’ is said to have motivated John Hinckley for an assassination attempt of President Ronald Reagan. The cruel rape scene in the movie ‘Born Innocent’ was imitated in another real life criminal incidence. The girls who were arrested for raping a Californian girl with a bottle later admitted that they were inspired by the act shown in the movie. Ronald Zamora who became known for inhumanly murdering an aged woman was later identified as an addict to the violence in Television. Unusual exposure to media and violence made him incompetent for distinguishing reality and fantasy. (Delores Isom)The correlation between media violence and violent behavior was presented in the research report prepared by Rowell Huesmann and Laramie D through a great number of facts. For their research, they observed children and youth and demonstrated several experiments to prove the exposure to violence in TV or films increased the possibility of violent behavior. They conducted scientific experiments under controlled laboratory settings and established that observing violence in on Television television or films changed the behavior of the observers. It was true for different groups of people including children or adults, males or females and normal or aggressive people. Some other studies have established that the depiction of violence and its consequences exposed through media news also impact a fraction of viewers. It can be understood by observing the occurrence of an increase in suicides for the course of up to two weeks of time, followed by highly publicized suicides. Source? Many studies could establish that the effects of violence exposed through media including TV shows, movies and news channels can be both short term and long term. Playing of video games also is harmful for its users as most of them involve violence. In the United States, about 52% children in the age group of 8–18 years play video game on a daily basis. Studies have suggested that children who play violent video games behave violently while those who play nonviolent video games behave less violently. (Huesmann and Laramie.) You made a claim that relates to your thesis and have provided extensive research and examples but you have not included a direct quotation or acknowledged that not everyone will agree with you or stated their objections. See the grading rubric and general instructions for more on making claims. In the last four decades, many studies have proven the relationship between media violence and violent behavior. Most of the studies were conducted in a laboratory setting. In 2009 Paul Boxer, an assistant professor of psychology at Rutgers University in Newark led a different study. The links between media violence and real engagement in antisocial behavior in society was documented after his research. He concluded after considering factors such as academic skills, community violence and emotional issues that childhood and adolescent violent media inclinations contributed considerably to the prediction of violence and aggression. (Nauert). The concerns proposed by the findings of researches on media violence should be addressed by the policy makers and politicians. Bandura has explained his theory and the result of Bobo doll experiment in various political conferences. During his tenure, U.S President Bill Clinton implemented policies to discourage violence on television shows. How does this fit here? Bandura advocated that the adults should try to provide positive role models for the children and the youth through the media. He has encouraged the public to control aggressive and violent behavior in the society. (Delores Isom) You have stated a lot of information here but have not made a claim that relates to your thesis. Violence in fictional TV shows, TV news, video games and movies can influence the viewers and increase the risks for violent behavior. The extent of this influence is scientifically proved. The risk of violent behavior is more in any environment filled with violence. The specific individualities of the viewer and the nature of media content define the extent of violent behavior revealed by the spectator. Media violence may not be proved as the leading causal factor of violent behavior yet it is undoubtedly one of the potential contributory factors for violent behavior.
