Banned Book

Independent Reading Project

Due Date: December 3rd

“I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”  ~Evelyn Beatrice Hall

“What progress we are making.  In the Middle Ages they would have burned me.  Now they are content with burning my books.”  ~Sigmund Freud, 1933

For this assignment you will choose a book that has at one time been placed on a “Banned/Challenged Book List” (see your teacher to confirm the book has at one time been banned). You will read the book and complete double-entry notes to demonstrate that you have read and began to analyze the book. Then you will research why the book was banned and write a Literary Analysis Essay analyzing the book, why it was banned, and your opinion on whether the book should be banned or not. Finally, you will present your findings to the class in a 3-5 minute presentation with a short question and answer period to follow. This project will count for a Literary Analysis Essay Grade as well as a Presentation Grade.

Part #1: Double Entry Journal (25 Points) Create a double-entry journal (2 columns) on loose-leaf paper. In the first column, record a quote you found significant or vivid along with the page number the quote was found on. This is your concrete detail or CD. In the second column record two of your own statements about the quote. These are your commentary sentences or CM. You will need to complete 2 CDs and 4 CMs for every 25 pages of reading. You must include a short 3-4 sentence summary for each 25 pages.

Title this assignment “Double Entry Journal” and attach it to the Literary Response Paper.

Example:

|CD |CM |

|“All other elil do what they have to do and Frith moves them as he moves us. They |Men are capable of evil that cannot be found anywhere else in nature. Other |

|live on the earth and they need food. Men will never rest till they've spoiled the|animals, even the elil who hunt rabbits, simply do what they need to do to |

|earth and destroyed the animals” (217). |survive. |

Part #2: Analysis (50 Points) Write a 2-3 page analysis paper which explains your opinion on if the book should or should not be banned. Please explain why or why not. Remember you need to include evidence from the novel to support your claim. It should also include research on where and why the book was banned. If the book was banned in more than one place, list all the places the book was banned (or at least a majority of the places). Give direct quotes of sections of the book that would be evidence for why the book was banned (example: The use of the “n word” in To Kill a Mockingbird.) Remember, you should have formal tone, sandwich your quotes, and ANALYZING the story…not summarizing.

Part #3: Presentation (25 pts)Your presentation will be 3-5 minutes in front of the entire class. You will present a summary of your paper including the answers to all questions. Do not just plan on reading your paper to the class; that is not a presentation. You will also need to have a Power-Point or Prezi Presentation to go along with your presentation. After your presentation there will be time for questions from the audience members. Your ability to answer these questions will be part of your grade.
