If it weren’t for this alliance, Germany would not have been defeated. However, after World War II, major political and economic differences between the U.S. and Soviet Union caused the alliance to break up. More importantly, they became outright enemies which led to the Cold War.One of biggest concerns for the United States was that the Soviet Union would invade European allies because of their weakened state after World War II. To prevent this from happening, the U.S. led the formation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in 1949. One of the Soviet Union’s goals was to spread communism around the world. The purpose of the treaty was to prevent the Soviet Union from doing just that. The NATO alliance turned out to be successful in preventing the Soviet Union from dominating European allies. After the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, many countries that were once allies of the former Soviet Union decided to join NATO. These countries joined the alliance because they were afraid Russia would try to take control of them again and needed the protection of NATO (especially the US) to prevent this from happening. Russia on the other hand, felt threatened by NATO (especially the US) because countries that were once its allies were now joined in a military alliance against them. U.S./Europe’s Position on NATOTrump’s Position on NATORussia/Putin’s Position on NATONATO is NOT outdated and the world is still a dangerous placeThe U.S. and Europe need to remain a united frontRussia is already starting to take over other countries (2014, took over Crimea, Ukraine and made it part of Russia)NATO is needed to prevent Russia from taking over other countriesRussia will only listen to the U.S. and Europe if they remain strong and unitedThinks NATO is obsolete (outdated)Cost the U.S. a fortune; the U.S. is paying the bill while the European nations are not paying their fair shareThe U.S. should focus on Russia being an ally not, an enemyObjects to expansion of NATOConsiders it a direct threat to RussiaRussia does NOT have a similar alliance near Europe or the U.S.What was the original purpose of NATO?Was NATO successful in achieving its original purpose?? Why or why not?Why did countries that were once Allies of the Soviet Union (Russia) want to join NATO?Do you think NATO will help the countries that recently joined?? How?Do you think Russia has a good reason to be against NATO today?Do you believe the countries of NATO would fight to protect another NATO country that was attacked? ................
