To prepare for this informal writing assignment, we will discuss the following questions in class. You may wish to take a few notes to help you write the paper.
• Why did you decide to go to college?
• Did you consider other options such as work, military, or technical training?
• Why did you decide to come to Southeast? Did you consider other options?
• Did Southeast’s general education program, University Studies, have anything to do with your choice of college?
• What do you think will be the major difference between your high school experience and your college experience?
• What is the purpose of college in your opinion? What do you think the administrators of colleges and universities think the purpose of college is? Why do you think employers want to hire college graduates or people with some college credit?
• What do you think is meant by a 'liberal' education?
• Other than your future career options, how will attending college impact your personal life? Your leisure time? Your family life?

Assignment
Write a 2 - 3 page essay entitled Why I chose to go to college and what I believe it will do for me. The essay should be thoughtful and have some content, don’t just write to fill up space. The paper should be word processed – double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 or equivalent. If this is not possible – see me. The paper will be due Sept. 1, 2010 by 5:00 pm . You will turn in the document electronically using the course Dropbox. It must be saved as a Microsoft Word document or a .txt or .rtf format. I cannot convert Microsoft Works files, so if you are using that program, save the document as a .rtf or other type file.
We will revisit this paper at the end of the semester, after we have studied more about Liberal Education and the University Studies Program.
