STUDY GUIDE 2

Grudem Chapter 6: Four characteristics of scripture -- clarity

1. IN YOUR OWN WORDS, BRIEFLY EXPLAIN WHAT GRUDEM MEANS WHEN HE AFFIRMS THE “CLARITY OF SCRIPTURE.”

2. Based on this chapter, why do some people misunderstand the Bible or find it difficult to understand?

3. According to Grudem, why does the Body of Christ need Bible scholars?

Grudem Chapter 7: Four characteristics -- necessity

4. LIST THE THREE THINGS GRUDEM THINKS THE BIBLE IS NECESSARY FOR, AND THE TWO FOR WHICH IT IS NOT NECESSARY. DO YOU AGREE WITH THESE TWO LISTS? CAN YOU THINK OF ANYTHING ELSE THE BIBLE IS NECESSARY FOR? CAN YOU THINK OF ANYTHING ELSE FOR WHICH THE BIBLE IS NOT NECESSARY?

Grudem Chapter 8: Four characteristics -- sufficiency

5. HOW WOULD GRUDEM ANSWER THE QUESTION, “DOES GOD EVER LEAD PEOPLE THROUGH SUBJECTIVE IMPRESSIONS?” (HINT: READ FOOTNOTE #1 ON THE SECOND PAGE OF THIS CHAPTER.)

6. How would Grudem respond to someone (like Rob Bell, for example) who says there were many viewpoints in the early church, even on crucial doctrines like whether everyone will be saved, and therefore we should accept all of these as legitimate Christian options for belief.

7. Grudem lists six “Practical Applications of the Sufficiency of Scripture.” Which of the six are the most important for you in your own personal walk and/or ministry? Why are these the most important for you?

Scholes Article: “Doctrinal Convictions and Persuasions”

8. WHEN DR. BRIGHT CALLED ALAN ON THE PHONE, WHAT WAS HE CONCERNED ABOUT? EXPLAIN HOW THIS CONCERN IS CONNECTED TO THE DOCTRINE OF INERRANCY.

9. At which level of belief does Alan thinks inerrancy should be classified, and why?

10. State why Alan told Ron that he thought he should leave Crusade staff. Do you agree that someone who believes as Ron did should leave? Why or why not?

Grudem Chapter 9: the existence of god

11. IN THIS CHAPTER, GRUDEM LISTS SEVEN EVIDENCES OR ARGUMENTS FOR GOD’S EXISTENCE (FOUR OF THEM UNDER THE HEADING, “TRADITIONAL PROOFS.”) WHICH OF THESE SEVEN DO YOU FIND MOST CONVINCING PERSONALLY? WHICH OF THE SEVEN DO YOU THINK WOULD BE MOST CONVINCING TO THE PEOPLE YOU HAVE TRIED TO SHARE CHRIST WITH, IN THE PAST? EXPLAIN WHY THESE WOULD HAVE BEEN THE MOST CONVINCING.

Grudem Chapter 10: the knowibility of god

12. BASED ON THIS CHAPTER, CLARIFY IN WHAT WAYS WE CAN KNOW GOD AND IN WHAT WAYS WE CANNOT KNOW HIM.

Grudem Chapter 11: the character of god: “incommunicable attributes”

13. ACCORDING TO GRUDEM, WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ATTRIBUTES OF GOD THAT ARE COMMUNICABLE AND THOSE THAT ARE INCOMMUNICABLE?

14. What is Grudem’s response to those who are troubled that the Bible uses anthropomorphic language to describe God?

15. Based on Grudem’s discussion, how would you reconcile God’s attribute of unchangeableness (immutability) with the places where the Bible says God changed His mind?

16. Do you believe God possesses the attribute of “impassibility?” Why or why not?

17. Do you think God is timeless (above or outside of time)? Why or why not?

18. If God is omnipresent, what do we mean when we say that someone is, or will be “separated from God.” (For example, Christians often say that Hell is “eternal separation from God.”) If God is absolutely everywhere, how could one of His created beings ever be separated from Him?
