Kevin HillRelated Services: Common Supports for Students with Disabilities AssessmentDescribe what related services are and how they help students with disabilities in school environments.Related Services provides special needs students with assistance to be as successful as possible within the general educational environment. These needs will be outlined in the student’s Individual Educational Plan (IEP) as to allow for identification of a service, or services that will enable the students the greatest access to the general education classroom. Access meaning inclusion into the general educational curriculum along with their peers, ability to meet their established goals as stated in their IEP and participation in extracurricular activities.Numerous services, too many to individually list, are available for a myriad of needs of the students. Physical Therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT), Speech-Language Pathology Services (SPLS), Social Work Services (SWS), and Psychological Services (PS) are the most common services offered. Students with special needs may need a combination of services to obtain desired results. Why do you think there is such a wide range of related services and why is this important to students who have disabilities? Each student is unique. Each with their own set of circumstances that leads to a determination that they are a special needs student. Their needs may be medically, mentally or psychologically related. They may be present at birth or introduced at a later date. With each of these reasons the needs vary. Often we see a student who has multiple reasons for services. Couple all the reasons for student classification and you can see there are an incredible amount of scenarios that need to be addressed. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that each individual student be treated as an individual and given the service(s) that he/she needs.Once a student is determined to be eligible for special education and related services, what decisions must the multidisciplinary team make about the delivery of the related services? Discuss at least three.AHow the services will be delivered. Services can be delivered either directly by The service professional or indirectly by the educator or family.B.Where the services will be will be provided. Services can be delivered in many Places to include, but are not limited to, the classroom, a resource room or another location such as the child’s homeC. Frequency of the service. How often will services be providedD.Duration of the services. How long will the services be provided during a specific time period. E. When will the services begin (start and stop). Each circumstance is unique and will require a unique period of time. Note: IEPs are required to be reviewed annually but often are reviewed much more frequently. During the meetings revisions may be made. Note: Services should be provided in the least constrictive environment. In your own words, briefly describe what school social workers or school psychologists do and how they help students with disabilities. These individuals are an essential part of the schools staff that provide counseling to students, families and educators alike. They connect the school with the family outside the classroom and often within the home or community. They assist with the whys of the special needs and the how to deal with issue that are faced. They are liaisons between various entities all striving for the same goal, student success.Serena is a second grader who has Down syndrome. She has articulation difficulties and balance and gross-motor control issues, and is highly distractible in the classroom setting. What related services might be beneficial for this student and why?Serena is a prime example of a special needs students requiring multiple services. For her articulation deficiencies she will most likely require the services of a speech-language pathologist. For her gross-motor skills the specialization of an occupational therapist (OT) would be appropriate being as the OT is concerned with the holistic, not such physical, concerns of the child, as seen with a physical therapist.
