“the conflict to come”

John 16:1 – 15

July 25, 2018

Relevant Question: “What will the coming conflict do?”

1) Convict Sinners [v8 – 10]

2) Condemn Satan [v11]

3) Counsel Saints [v12 – 13]

1) The Holy Spirit first convicts the unbelievers of the sins they commit? [T] or [F]

← Sermon > falsE. The Holy Spirit first convicts the unbeliever of unbelief. That is, the Holy Spirit will convey a “verdict of guilt” and the “sense of doom” upon every unbeliever. The issue is not the sins they commit, but the single condemning sin of unbelief.

← Sermon > The Holy Spirit convinces the unbeliever that it is wrong not to believe in Jesus. That is, the Holy Spirit shows unbelievers that they have refused to admit their sin and their need for salvation.

← v9 > “Of sin, because they believe not on me.”

← Sermon > The Holy Spirit does not extinguish sin, but rather He intensifies the condemning affects of sin.

← v11 > “Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.”

2) According to the sermon, Jesus was delivered up for our offenses but He was raised for our justification. [T] or [F]

← Sermon > TRUE. Jesus took our offenses (sin and guilt) to the Cross of Calvary and died in our place. God showed His commitment to judge the world by placing Jesus, His only begotten Son, on the cross for our sin.

← Sermon > Moreover, Jesus was raised from the dead for our justification. That is, Jesus was raised that we might not only have our sins subtracted, but so that we might have His righteousness added.

← v10 > “Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more.”

← Romans 5:1 > “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

3) What does the coming conflict from the world indicate for those committed to Christ?

_____________________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________________

← Sermon > The hatred, struggles, and the coming conflict from the world are reminders that believers will never “fit in” with the world as long as they are openly committed to Christ. The world is in constant conflict with God; loathing everything godly, and hating everyone connected to Christ.

← Sermon > That is, all disagreements, differences, and conflicts are the offspring of hate and evil. Remember, hate has two daughters: “narrow-minded” which is belief, and “bigotry” which is behavior.

← Sermon > That is why as Christians, we have consciously and deliberately turned from sin and sought Jesus as Savior.

← Sermon > That is why as Christians, we require “supernatural help” (from the Holy Spirit) to empower us to love one another.

4) According to the sermon, why did Jesus send the Holy Spirit to the Church?

_____________________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________________

← Sermon > The major reason why the Holy Spirit is come is to empower the church for life and witness. That is, for life both eternally and abundantly, and for witness to give testimony to the grace and goodness of Jesus Christ.

← John 10:10 > “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

← Acts 1:8 > “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

← Sermon > It is the Holy Spirit who reminds us that there can be no conversion without conviction, and there can be no conviction apart from the Spirit of Truth using the Word of God and the witness of the Saints of God.

← Sermon > It is the Holy Spirit hovering over the Church sowing and bestowing harmony and unity within the people of Christ. The Holy Spirit neutralizes the negative effects of a hateful world. The Holy Spirit is our Helper and Comforter during the coming conflicts. Worldly conflict despises the loving authority of Jehovah God; it dislikes the saving authority of Jesus Christ; and it detests the helping authority of the Holy Spirit.

5) According to the sermon, what does “The Christian journey is a tedious journey” mean?

[a] The Christian life is impossible to live.

[b] The member of the Church will be hated by the world.

[c] The Christian life will not be easy or rosy.

[d] All of the above.

← Sermon > c = YES, the Christian life and journey will not be easy or rosy. Jesus cautions His disciples (and us) that tough times are ahead and warns of the coming conflict. That is, excommunication, persecution, and even death will come upon those who have placed their faith in Jesus as Christ. Moreover, due to the coming conflict many will be offended, stumble or fall away, but the Holy Spirit will keep the faithful steadfast and unmovable.

← v1 > “These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.”

← Sermon > A = no. The Christian life is “possible” (not impossible) to live. Since the Holy Spirit has come, He leads, guides, and counsels each of us into the truth about Jesus’ words and His work. The Comforter guides us in grasping the reality of Christ’s words and then experiencing that reality by obeying His words.

← v13 > “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.”

← Sermon > b = no. Being a member of the Church does not bring, in itself, hatred from the world. That is, the world does not hate the people in the church, but rather the church that is in the people. Consider, it is the possessing Christian and not the professing Christian to whom the world directs its’ hate.

← John 15:19 > “If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.”

← Sermon > D = no. Not each statements is accurate; therefore, nullifying an “All of the above” choice.

Bonus) What does the word “omnipresence” mean?

← Sermon > Omnipresence means that the Holy Spirit is everywhere presence in the world at the same time and that He is with every believer simultaneously.

← Sermon > If Jesus “in the flesh” could only be in one place at a time, the gift of the Holy Spirit would enable Jesus to be wherever a believer was. That is, God with us (God the Son) on the outside will now become God with us (God the Spirit) abiding on the inside.
