CLIMATE CHANGE: MAN CAUSED (Formerly known as Global Warming) FACT OR FICTION?START WITH BASIC INFORMATIONClimatologists tell us that earth’s climate is always changing. They contend, and have scientific evidence to support their contention, that global climate has been in the process of change for as long as the earth has been in existence. It is still changing, they say.Specifically, climatologists are in agreement that the average temperature of the earth has been gradually increasing for many years—even centuries. Most climatologists say that earth has been warming ever since the end of the last ICE AGE. So, YES, earth is getting VERY GRADUALLY warmer in the 21st Century. This fact raises questions:1. What has caused this increase in global temperature?2. Should people be worried about this increase in temperature?3. Are people to blame for this increase in temperature?3. Should humans take counter-measures to stop the increase in earth’s temperature?4. If so, what should humans do to stop or slow this increase? (Maybe the better question might ask: are humans capable of stopping ‘global warming’? And what about ‘global cooling’ if that should become a problem?) THEORY BEHIND MAN-CAUSED CLIMATE CHANGE There is a group of scientists, politicians, media, activists, and a large number of citizens in Europe and America who believe that human activity is to blame for ‘GLOBAL WARMING’ or ‘CLIMATE CHANGE’.Proponents of the theory that people are the cause of climate change/global warming argue that we must change our lifestyles to save the world. They warn that if this warming trend is unchecked, the following catastrophic events will occur:Rising Sea Levels\Melting Ice Caps resulting in flooded coastlines and low lying islandsSignificantly more category 5 hurricanes, F 4 and 5 tornadoes, and SEVERE storms of all kinds, floods, and droughtsFamine resulting in widespread malnutrition, starvation, and deathInsect population explosion (which contributes to famine and general human misery)These predictions all lead to one conclusion: Death to HumansSome argue that Man-Made Climate Change is the greatest threat facing humans and is already, they claim, the driving force behind much of the world’s conflict including the migration of large numbers of people from one region of the earth to another. So, let’s just examine the major points/questions of the theory of ‘man caused climate change’ through a series of questions and answers. What human activities are responsible for earth warming? According to those who ascribe to man-made climate change, the largest contributor of rising global temperatures is the use of fossil fuels (Oil, Gasoline, Diesel, natural gas, and Coal) that emit Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere where burned for transportation, manufacturing, and generation of electricity.** Why is this a problem? When the energy required to fly a jet, move a loaded 18-wheeler, or make manufactured goods is produced from burning fossil fuel, the process produces carbon dioxide molecules which are released into the atmosphere. When the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere becomes too concentrated, these molecules produce a ‘green-house’ effect that raises surface temperature. What should humans do differently to ‘save our planet’?We should refrain from using carbon fuels and discover or develop alternative sources of energy that eliminate carbon emissions. Many governments already support increased attempts to develop non-polluting, renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power.** Wind and Solar Power are often referred to as ‘GREEN ENERGY’. **Other human activities such as cutting trees and human consumption of meat exacerbate ‘global warming’ or climate change. Many climate ‘alarmists (those who see catastrophe in the near future if humans fail to act NOW) oppose the raising of livestock (cattle, sheep, hogs) because they produce carbon emissions! WHAT ABOUT UNBELIEVERS CALLED MAN-MADE CLIMATE CHANGE ‘DENIERS’?Most educated people understand that earth’s climate is in a constant state of change. Scientific evidence of natural climate change is basically irrefutable. However, when it comes to climate change (global warming) precipitated by humans, there are many skeptics, climatologists and meteorologists included, who question the degree to which human activity can change the natural climate. These skeptics, referred to in the press as ‘climate deniers’, question—1. The authenticity of the scientific process used to prove human caused climate change2. The accuracy of climate data utilized, and 3. Reliability of the computer models used that predict changes in climate. PERTINENT QUESTIONS: WHY DON’T WE JUST ELIMINATE FOSSIL FUELS ALTOGETHER JUST TO BE SAFE?IS CARBON DIOXIDE REALLY A POLLUTANT THAT CONTAMINATES THE AIR?WHAT ARE THE SPECIFIC CONSEQUENCES RESULTING FROM MORE CO2 IN THE ATMOSPHERE?HOW DID THE ISSUE OF CLIMATE CHANGE BECOME SO POLITICAL?We will attempt to answer these questions as we examine the idea of man-caused climate change.SUMMARYEARTH’S CLIMATE IS ALWAYS IN A STATE OF CHANGE; IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN IN A STATE OF CHANGE. Geologists assure us that ICE AGES followed by periods of warming have existed throughout our planet’s history. There is NO DOUBT that climate change has the potential to create serious consequences. The article ‘The Year Without Summer’ provides a glimpse into how a change in climate (triggered by the eruption of a super volcano) negatively impacted humans all over the world. Just remember that the climate change described in that article was the product of natural forces and not influenced by human activity. As bad as the consequences were for people, there was absolutely nothing they could have done to stop this short-term change in world climate. ................
