Why Reading is Important RAFT

A RAFT is a summarizing writing assignment that shows what you know about the subject. Your RAFT assignment will prove that you understand the information accurately and completely while presenting the information in an interesting way.

RAFT stands for:

R = Role – Who is writing the piece? What is their point-of-view? What is their role?

A = Audience – Who is the audience writing for?

F = Format – What format is being used for the writing? Is it a news story, journal entry, memo?

T = Topic – What are you writing about What information is being summarized?

Choose one of the following and then write your response:

RAFT 1

Role – Grandmother

Audience – Grandson/Granddaughter

Format – Letter to the future

Topic – Why reading is important to your future.

RAFT 2

Role – Teacher

Audience – Student

Format – A speech

Topic – How learning how to read well will help you in school.

RAFT 3

Role – Employer

Audience – Job Applicant

Format – Memo

Topic – The importance of being able to read well as an employee with our company.
