Scientific Method - The Science Queen

Scientific Method

A blueprint for experiment success.

What is the scientific method?

It is a simple method scientists use to conduct an investigation.

It is a way to ask & answer scientific questions by asking questions & conducting experiments.

Question/Problem

1 Ask a question about something observed.

1 Why?

2 How?

3 What?

2 Question to be solved.

3 Must be about something measurable.

Hypothesis

1 Educated guess about how things work.

2 Prediction

3 Use If, then statements

1 If ____ [I do this], then _____ [this will happen]

4 Focus on one variable only.

Experiment

1 Tests your hypothesis.

2 Is it accepted (right) or rejected (wrong) ?

3 Change only one variable at a time.

4 Use a control or control group

(A group that has nothing done to it. Standard used for comparison in an experiment.)

6 In order for results to be valid, conduct several tests.

Conclusion

1 Summary of your experiment.

2 After your experiment, analyze your data to see if your hypothesis was accepted or rejected.

3 If hypothesis is rejected, give possible reasons for the difference between your hypothesis and the experimental results.
