1. Foul Taste Of Freedom (Pro-pain)

YOUNG, DUMB AND HELPLESS - IN THE STATES

YOU SAY YOU AIN'T GOT NO MONEY - I CAN RELATE

I LOST MY JOB AND MY HOUSE AND MY - PIECE OF MIND

WE'RE IN THE DEEPEST DEPRESSION OF - MODERN TIME

A THOUSAND POINTS OF LIGHT SHINING - IN MY FACE

EYES ARE BLINDED BY A CAN OF REPLUBLICAN MACE

SHINING SEAS OF STARVING PEOPLE ARE THE - UNEMPLOYED

STARS AND STRIPES ARE RUBBER CHECKS - NULL AND VOID

WE ARE THE RED, WHITE AND BLUE THAT YOU BLEED

WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO SURVIVE AND SUCCEED

WORTHLESS AND WEAK IS "BE ALL YOU CAN BE"

DEMOCRACY LEAVES A FOUL TASTE OF FREEDOM IN ME

BUDGET CUTS AND TAX HIKES - CRUSH THE LAND

OF PLENTY, SEE THE WEAK DIE BY GOD'S HAND

IF YOU'RE PROUD OF YOUR COUNTRY THEN YOU'RE PROBABLY RICH

BUF IF YOU'RE FED UP YOU BETTER PISS, MOAN AND BITCH

YANKEE DOODLE DICKWEED WENT TO TOWN

APPLE PIE AND CHEVROLET SHOT HIM DOWN

A PATRIOTIC, FATHEADED, SUCKER, FREAK

IS PROUD TO SERVE THE COUNTRY THAT HAD SERVED HIM WEAK...

Slang language:

What’s Slang: a language typical of a certain region, colloquial.

In conversation but also in songs and books a lot of Slang language is used. The sort of Slang people use often depends on the area they are from.

We’ll try to find the Slang in this song and we will try to translate it into regular, formal English.

- You ain’t got no money: You haven’t got any money

→ Typically American

- A rubber check:

1. Check = AE → cheque = BE

2. A cheque that the bank refuses to accept because the person who wrote it does not have enough money.

- Stars and stripes: the American flag

→ Nowadays: this is a common expression

Why do you think the singer uses Slang language? Who is he sending the message to?

( Working class people, people that use a common language.

Foul taste of freedom:

A) Working in groups:

4 pairs

Every pair gets to discuss and work on a part of the song. Afterwards they will present their findings to their fellow pupils.

1. Vocabulary: the pupils mark and look up the difficult words in their particular parts. They’re aware of the fact that the rest of the pupils will have to understand all the words to.

2. Content: Every group has to solve some questions concerning the content of their particular part. It is possible that the pupils have to scan the whole song to find the answer to their question.

B) Class discussion:

Every group(or the teacher) fills in their findings and new vocabulary in a BB scheme. This way, the whole group can discuss things that are left unanswered. The last part of the song, which hasn’t been worked on by the pupils, will be discussed together.

C) Conclusion:

Here we will try to discuss our personal views on American as well as Belgian politics.

Questions:

Would the world be better of without people like Bush? Why?

Do you think people in communist lands like China are better of than us?

What should change in Belgium?
