One is currently a Head Start teacher and the other runs a pretty big program in California. We are part way through state assessments and the feedback is pretty rapid. We don’t have OPE scores yet but LBE has increased scores in all four categories! Carper said that Hilltop scores are off the chart good!Risner reported that the hiring committees were unanimous in the choice to hire Kara Powell for OPE Principal. She comes from a high poverty school and has a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood. She has also spent a lot of time in classrooms. Kara is not afraid to push up her sleeves and get involved. OBSD looks forward to having Kara aboard.Risner reported that ESD 112 is closing the Early Head Start portion of their program. They have limited our numbers in recent years from 10 to 5 to 3. Those students will fit nicely into our new Pre-Kindergarten program. After reviewing the budget, Risner and Business Manager, Thompson discussed a need to raise the participation fee for sports. State travel has eaten up a lot of the budget, as well as sending cheer and band to state events. The district cannot continue to fund everything. The cost for officials is going up and OBSD also has to pay travel for officials. There are so many programs and staff that we are not willing to cut and the district is concerned about footing the bill for all of the add-ons.Business Manager’s ReportBudget status is as it has been. We have not yet ordered a new bus. General Fund has gone up because of property taxes coming in. We are still closing out costs on the renovation projects in Capital Projects. ASB is up a bit.Enrollment is holding steady from last month. We budgeted 12 for Alt School but have 24’ish. CTE has over the budgeted amount. Our average count is still 1018.Principal/Director ReportsThe Board liked that Principal Adams reported that kids were showing very focused motivation during testing.Other BusinessAlt School graduation details are being finalized this week. The date set for their graduation is June 16.The National Trainer for ICU is training secondary staffs on May 31 from 12:45 -4:30 at Ilwaco Community Center.
