Overview

Under the direction of the Operations Manager, the Animal Protection Officer will independently investigate complaints of animal neglect, abuse and cruelty as assigned, to resolve founded complaints through education and/or enforcement, and to provide detailed reports of activities, at all times adhering to the Saskatoon SPCA’s policies and procedures, representing the SPCA in a professional manner and promoting the Vision, Mission and Guiding principles of the Society.

Education and Experience

Minimum of Grade 12 required. Previous experience in security, criminology, enforcement and investigations will be given preference;

Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Driver’s License required; must provide a current driver’s abstract if considered for the position;

Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills;

Knowledge of computers – data bases, spreadsheets, Crystal reports, Word;

Demonstrates excellent administrative and note-taking skills;

Proven ability to prepare comprehensive reports as required;

Ability to communicate with the public and handle difficult situations with diplomacy;

Ability to interpret the Animal Protection Act, and to use discretion when receiving complaints and performing routine investigations;

Knowledge of domestic animals, including various animal breeds and species and the proper care and husbandry;

General knowledge of animal anatomy, physiology, behavior, nutrition and diseases;

Knowledge of disease transmission and bio-security;

Ability to handle fractious and/or injured animals with a minimum of personal risk;

Ability to handle all animals safely and humanely;

Ability to work effectively without direct supervision in a manner to ensure their own safety;

Ability to analyze the situation presented, identify the potential source of the problem, and to problem solve;

Ability to stay calm in stressful situations;

This position requires knowledge and ability to perform humane euthanasia. Training will be provided by our veterinarian;

Must provide a current criminal records check if considered for the position;

Applicant must be eligible to apply for Animal Protection Officer Status;

Duties May Include, But Are Not Limited to:

1. Cruelty Investigations

Investigate all complaints concerning neglected or abused animals and ensure that the Animal Protection Act and other relevant legislation is adhered to;

Compile evidence and information to pursue criminal charges when appropriate;

Prepare written reports on all complaints and investigations and maintain a filing system of all such reports;

Prepare, obtain and administer search warrants in cases where animals are in distress;

Prepare appropriate court documentation as required; maintain working relationship and communication with prosecutor’s office, and appear as court witness when required;

Maintain a working relationship and communication with other law enforcement agencies including the Saskatoon City Police, RM of Corman Park Police, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Sheriff’s Department and other SPCA’s as required;

Maintain a daily activity log, monthly and annual statistics, and monthly reports as directed.

2. Inspections

Inspect pet stores and other animal-holding facilities on a regular basis to ensure that a standard quality of animal care is provided and maintained;

Inspect animal-related events within the jurisdiction of the SPCA, including rodeos, circus, dog and cat shows, pony rides, wild animal displays, etc. within the jurisdiction of the Saskatoon SPCA;

Prepare and maintain monthly inspection reports, statistics and records for monthly submission to the Operations Manager or Supervisor;

3. Education Services

Assist with public education efforts and activities, such as the development of brochures, school tours and visits, and other public speaking engagements as assigned;

Serve as a resource person for inquiries regarding animal cruelty laws, investigation procedures, etc;

Educate the public at large at every opportunity regarding the law, the well-being of animals, and the ethics of animal welfare;

Participate in the development of programs;

Specific assignment as required by the Operations Manager or Supervisor.

4. General Duties and Working Conditions

The Animal Protection Officer will share on-call duties, so s/he must be willing to be on-call some evenings, weekends and holidays;

The Animal Protection Officer is required to wear a uniform while on duty. The officer will ensure that it is clean and pressed as needed to maintain a professional appearance;

Provisions of emergency response services as required;

Responsible for all documentation related to animals taken for veterinary care under the Animal Protection Act jurisdiction;

Maintain cleanliness and organization of office work area, ensuring adequate supply of required forms, documents, etc;

Ensure the cleanliness and good working order of company vehicles and equipment, including routine maintenance and repair schedules, inventory and up-keep;

Preparation and deliverance of reports as assigned;

May be required to euthanize animals in emergency situations;

Must use discretion and good judgment at all times to ensure the good reputation of the Society;

Must provide an acceptable Police Record Check;

Other duties as assigned by the Operations Manager or Supervisor.
