Cognitive walkthrough of WILEY online library

Cognitive walkthrough of WILEY online library

I asked myself the following questions after each task

Will the user try to achieve the right effect?

Will the user notice that the correct action is available?

Will the user associate the correct action with the effect to be achieved?

If the correct action is performed, will the user see that progress is being made toward solution of the task?

Book selected: Vital Signs for Nurses (2011)

1. Link to Vital signs for nurses from Library A-Z e-books

2. Find contents of book

Yes users would want to check the contents of the book first before exploring it further

The user may have expected the menu to be down the left hand side initially but it is easy enough to see in the middle of the page and can be scrolled down

3. Find the section on Urine Output

Yes- this is the section they would want to view

They may notice it when they scroll down the contents if not they may put a search into the box on the side which is defaulted as in this book

A search using these terms without parenthesis brings up the chapter right away – or the summary at least and the chapter is easy enough to see on this screen

4. Read through this section

The user would want to read the chapter

[pic]

A click on the chapter tab on the above search will open up the PDF reader on the page – (this is IE8)

It allows you scroll or hyperlink to certain sections and also search using the binocluars clicking on the PDF also brings it up for the user too from the initial page

5. Download a chapter and save

The user would want to save it for later to read

Users are used to PDF and can see the icon right away to download – it downloads as a PDF usually would

6. Create account

A user would generally but not always want an account to save work to

Login/register would seem like a fairly easy terms to look for so they would happily go to it and register

On IE8 I had trouble signing in to my account or creating one the dialog box would not come up

On chrome it opened fine with the option to register - could then register and was quickly sent a link which took me back into my account

[pic]

I can now see my name at the top and instituional login

7. Go back to book

Yes I would most certainly need to sign into the book

Once there I can see that I need to sign back in as my institution through institutional login but this may not always be clear I go back to the book by searching publication titles for vital signs

[pic]

It brings up vital signs as unlocked and I can click on this again

8. Go to contents of book

Yes would want to go back contents, as before its easier to see now and straight forward enough

9. Find section on Early warning scores

Scrolled down to find section, had the option of searching if I wanted to

10. Enlarge text

You might find the text to small so to enlarge it may help with your work

As it is a PDF adobe file its easy to see on both chrome and IE8 how to increase the size – it is something which user would be familiar with

11. Save chapter to profile

You would want to save the title to your newly created account

[pic]

On the chapter tools to the right you can do various things such as add to your profile and in this case you can do this and see it easy enough when you do go on profile it is saved but saved under “saved articles” rather than chapter which may confuse

[pic]

12. Cite the text

[pic]

User would want the citation for their work if they were doing a project or essay

The tool is in the chapter tools on the right hand side menu where I am already familiar and a dialog box pops back up now

[pic]

In this case I have saved it as plain text

13. Search within book for word “electrocardiograph ”

The user having found that the books has been useful so far may want to look for more terms for their research – so they can search using the box in the top right hand corner again

14. Go to results and download a page

They would definitely want to go if there was a result of note in there.

[pic]

Once they clicked on there they can see in the summary that this chapter has electrocardiogram in the terms, they can then easily go to the chapter but not necessarily the term that they want

15. Search for another book in WILEY - Stroke

The user may want to explore the platform further for more books on useful topics

So first of all they will do a search for Stroke – they are used to using the search box by now and can see that there is a drop down menu for search terms on here

[pic]

Now you can see the type of item on the right hand side and also you can filter

16. Select a title you haven’t read

After finding results it is likely they would want to select a title

All results are clickable but some have the unloicked picture which from working through this last book would indicate it is available

[pic]

Selecting one you haven’t read has meant it is easy to see that is available for you to look through

Overall Wiley books is very easy to use, the text might be a little on the small side but it is easy to navigate and uses the familialry of PDF reader to work with on the books. The problems I could see involve searching wihtin books as when you did search and get results it did not go to that specific term you searched within the chapter you would have to search within the PDF itself when you got there. If a term had not been selected as a key term then you may not find it at all. Generally though it is clear and crisp format which in many ways is suited to journals and books.
