Pregnancy Facts:

Pregnancy Cravings

Many women crave certain foods during pregnancy. Experts don't know why cravings are common, but think hormonal changes may change the way foods taste to pregnant women.

Pica is a craving for a nonfood item, such as clay or cornstarch. Pica can harm the fetus and mother. See your health care provider if pica occurs or if the craved food replaces more nutritious foods.

Suggestions to help control cravings include:

Eat breakfast and include several snacks every day.

Exercise daily to curb appetite. Discuss your exercise routine with your doctor first.

If hormonal changes cause mood swings, read a book, take a walk, or call a friend instead of eating.

Substitute a healthy food for a nonhealthy food such as whole grain crackers for potato chips.

If non-healthy cravings can't be avoided, control portion sizes; eat a few spoonfuls of ice cream instead of a bowl full.

Breastfeeding Corner:

Avoiding and Treating Sore Nipples

When you first begin to breastfeed your baby, some tenderness and soreness is normal. However, if your baby is held in the correct position, your nipples should never crack, blister or bleed. For a good "latch" use the following technique: At the start of a feeding, be sure your baby's mouth is open wide. While her mouth is open wide, you should pull the baby onto the breast quickly and gently --chin first. Then position the baby off-center so that the lower jaw takes in more areola (the dark area around the nipple) than the top jaw. More of the bottom of the areola than the top of the areola should be covered. Also her body and face should be facing you and have her tucked in closely. Support your breast so your baby's mouth does not slip out of position and settle on the end of the nipple.

If your nipples continue to be sore, here are some tips: Nurse more often and for shorter lengths of time. The hungrier a baby is, the harder a baby will suck. A

good time to offer your breast is when your baby is just coming out of a sleep and not quite fully awake. Try to change your position each feeding. This will put pressure on a different spot each time. Gently rub a little breast milk on to your nipples after a feeding, and then let it dry. This will help them

heal. To keep internal moisture of your nipples, they need to be covered by a moisture barrier. To keep a

moisture barrier and to heal sore nipples you can apply a USP modified lanolin such as Lansinoh Brand Lanolin (which is endorsed and recommended by La Leche League International) after each feeding.

Try not to use soap, lotions or other products that contain alcohol on your breasts. These products could dry you out and cause irritation.

If you are still having problems with breastfeeding, ask your WIC Nutritionist.

Babies were born to breastfeed. Always have been. Always will be.

Wilma WIC

Dear Wilma WIC,

I am pregnant and during the day I feel very tired. Then at nighttime I can't fall asleep. Is this normal and should I be concerned with my sleep patterns?

Signed, Awake Amy

Dear Awake Amy,

This is common during the first and third trimester. Don't worry or get yourself all worked up, that will only make it worse. Try to take afternoon naps, but not too many so that it is hard to sleep at night. Also, try to drink warm milk or take a warm bath before bedtime. Find ways to relax yourself to sleep like reading before bedtime. Regular exercise during the day can also help. Check with your doctor to discuss your exercise routine first. If you feel you have a serious sleep disorder, talk to your doctor.

Signed, Wilma WIC
