OFF

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The R-Phils lost Thursday night's contest against the Sea Dogs 3-2 despite Francisco Morales' sterllar start. The Phillies' number three prospect went six innings scoreless, giving up just one hit and striking out five Sea Dogs. Arquimedes Gamboa got the offense started in an exciting way, as his low line drive up the middle turned into an inside the park homer after the diving attempt went unsuccessful for Portland. In his first game after being resigned by the Phillies, Grenny Cumana had a huge RBI double to bring in Gamboa for the only other Reading run in the seventh. Jonathan Hennigan and Brian Marconi both pithced scoreless frames of relief, but Aneurys Zabala was credited with the loss in his inning. SPEED KILLS: The two runs for the Fightins came in exciting fashion on the base paths, as the two extra base hits from Arquimedes Gamboa and Grenny Cumana could not have been hitter to better parts of the field. In the bottom of the second, Gamboa laced a sinking liner to Portland's centerfielder Jeisson Rosario, who attempted to dive and make the grab. He just missed it, letting it roll all the way to the wall, scoring Gamboa for the team's first inside the park homerun since 2014. Then in the seventh, Cumana ripped a double down the right field line to bring in Gamboa off second for his first hit of the 2021 season. The ball went all the way to the corner of the outifeld, so Cumana attempted to stretch it into three bags, but was nabbed short before sliding in head first. MORALES MOWES THEM DOWN: Phillies number three prospect Francisco Morales continues his impressive streak on the mound, as he pitched his second scoreless start in his last three trips to the mound. Morales gave up just one hit and walked four, compared to his five strikeouts, which now push his rank in the Double-A Northeast to a tie for third in total strikeouts with 67. BIG LEAGUE CLUB WATCH: MLB - The Phillies ended the first half of the season in a big way, taking two of three from the Red Sox after winning Sunday 5-4. The star of this game was Ronald Torreyes, who went three for four with a homerun and three RBIs. A two-RBI single from J.T. Realmuto helped give Philadelphia the extra run needed, as Christopher Sanchez was strong in emergency bulk relief following Aaron Nola being a late scratch. Ranger Suarez was brilliant in relief, recording his second save of the season after going two and a third scoreless. ON THIS DAY IN BASEBALLTOWN HISTORY: July 16, 2004: At Altoona, Ryan Howard passes Greg Luzinski and ties Hal Jones for the all-time Reading professional record for HR in a season with his 34th homer of the year. The Phils fall to Altoona, though, 7-3.
