Drive Mapping Instructions

The following are instructions for mapping drives on windows systems. This is tailored specifically to how to map shares on the UVA High Energy Physics DiskArray.

From ONSITE (or UVA-Anywhere VPN Tunnel)

1) Activate UVA-Anywhere (from the Cisco VPN client) if you are not physically on site.

2) Mouse over the “my computer” icon and Right click to bring up the context menu

3) Select “Map Network Drive”

4) A dialog box will come up asking you for details of the drive you want to map

a. Select a drive letter that you want used to access this disk (typically X: Y: Z: etc…)

b. For the folder to map enter the full folder path.

i. Example: \\hep-diskarray.physics.virginia.edu\HEP_Private

ii. Example: \\hep-diskarray.physics.virginia.edu\mu2e

c. The following “shares” are available on the raid array currently

i. NOVA (all work related to the NOvA experiment)

ii. mu2e (all work related to the Mu2E experiment)

iii. Backup (area where backups of the HEP cluster home disk are located)

iv. HEP (general HEP group information and resources)

v. dzero (dzero related items)

vi. CMS (CMS data area for VPT tests)

vii. Public (public area for general stuff, ftp etc…)

viii. norman (my area for testing)

d. After selecting a share to connect to you MUST choose the “connect using a different user name” option.

i. The user name that you need to use for a given share is the same as the share name (i.e. group level access)

ii. The password is specific to the share

1. NOVA share password: theta13

2. mu2e share password: muon2012

3. HEP share password: physics

e. The folder will open and you will see a new drive icon under the My Computer area.

From OFF SITE

1) From offside you will need to map the share via ftp or http access (both are enabled)

2) Click on “my computer” to open the drive listing.

3) Right click in an open area to bring up the context menu

4) Choose “Add a network location”

5) A dialog box will come up asking you for details of the drive you want to map

a. For the folder to map enter the full URL style locator for the folder

i. Example (FTP):

ii. Example (HTTP):

b. If you have selected an FTP resource you will be prompted on the next screen for what type of ftp access you want.

i. DESELECT “log on anonymously”

ii. Enter the user name corresponding to the share you are accessing (NOVA, mu2e, HEP, etc…)

iii. Enter the appropriate password when prompted

c. The folder will open, and will now be available as a network Folder (not a drive) accessible under your computer area.

From Anywhere via web browswer

1) Open your webbrowswer

2) Go to:

3) You will be shown all the available shares on the array

4) Click on the one your want

a. Enter the username and password for the share (user name is the share name, and is case sensitive, i.e. it is NOVA, not nova)

5) To view a file just click it

6) To upload a file click “upload” from the menu above the directory listing

7) Most other operations are obvious
