Granada Foundation - deadline 7 November 2013

Grant for voluntary and community organisations undertaking projects that encourage involvement in and understanding of the fine arts

and science in the North West of England. There are no stated minimum or maximum amounts. The Granada Foundation Grant is provided

and administered by The Granada Foundation and is available for voluntary and community organisations in the North West of England.

The Foundation aims to encourage the study and appreciation of the fine arts and sciences and to promote education, with a particular

interest in activity in the North West of England. The Foundation wishes to encourage and promote the study, practice and

appreciation of the fine arts, including drawing, architecture and landscape architecture, sculpture, literature, music, opera,

drama, cinema, and the methods and means of their dissemination. The Foundation also welcomes applications which aim to engage and

inspire young people and adults to take an interest in science. In general, the Council looks for imaginative proposals which will in

some way make the north-west a richer and more attractive place in which to live and work. Preference is given to supporting new

projects. Although the Foundation will support festivals and other annual events, it is on the understanding that such support should

not be regarded as automatically renewable.

People’s Postcode Lottery Extends Dream Fund Application Deadline - Stage 2 Deadline 15 November 2013

The People’s Postcode Lottery has announced that they have received a record 650 applications to Dream Fund 2014.  This is over

double the number they expected. Due to receiving such a high number of applications, the deadline for stage 2 applications has been

extended to Friday November 15th at 5:30pm. They are due to announce the winners in January 2014.  The Dream Fund gives organisations

the chance to deliver the project they have always dreamed of, but never had the opportunity to bring to life. Registered charities

and community organisations in Scotland, England or Wales can join forces to apply for up to £250,000 to deliver a new and innovative

project up to 24 months in length that encourage healthy living; social enterprise and environmental sustainability.

£6m fund announced to increase volunteering by young people - deadline 17 November 2013

The Cabinet Office has announced a new fund offering up to £6 million over two years to help voluntary organisations increase the

number of young people aged 10 to 20 taking part in social action. According to the Campaign for Youth Social Action, led by HRH The

Prince of Wales, only 29% of the 8.4 million young people in the UK are currently engaged in youth social action. This is not

necessarily due to an unwillingness to take part: some social action providers confirm that they have long waiting lists. Minister

for Civil Society Nick Hurd said: "We want to create a social action journey that every young person can easily get involved with and

feel valued, hone their skills, make new friends and ultimately benefit their community. "I’ve created this £6 million fund to

support organisations to offer more young people places on their fantastic programmes benefiting the community as well as the young

person themselves and make it easier for young people to progress onto the next challenging experience." Bids are invited from

charities, social enterprises and for profit businesses already delivering high quality youth social action in England.

Simpl Challenges - deadline 23 November 2013

Simpl Challenges, a platform developed by FutureGov for connecting local public services with innovators, are inviting people to

submit an idea or prototype that could help people keep fit & stay healthy, get people involved in reading, arts & culture, or help

people help each other.  They are looking for something that can demonstrate how the idea would work, how it would meet the need of

the users, how it would look like and what you would do with the winning prize to take the idea forward.  This can be a software,

storyboards, designs or art.  Simpl Challenges are offering a prize pot of £9000 as well as in-kind support to develop your idea by

Microsoft and to help take forward your prototype by University of Kent IT Clinic.  This competition is open to any UK resident. They

can participate individually or team up with other people. You are also welcome to enter as many ideas or prototypes as you like.

Sport England has launched the new £1 million Get Equipped grants programme. The programme provides grants of between £300 and

Wallace and Gromit Children’s Charity Invites UK Applications - deadline 6 December 2013

Registered charities working to improve the quality of life for children in hospitals and hospices in the UK may apply now for

funding to this annual grant scheme. The Wallace and Gromit Children's Charity aims to fund projects which are not funded directly by

the National Health Service. Grants of between £1,000 and £10,000 are available for charitable projects which enrich and improve the

quality of life of sick children in hospitals or hospices in any area in the UK. Preference is given to projects conceived by and in

children’s hospitals and hospices.

Arts Council England Invites Applications under its Large Capital Programme - deadline 12 December 2013

The Capital Programme supports organisations by investing in buildings and equipment to deliver their work, and to become more

sustainable and resilient businesses. The funding will prioritise the consolidation and improvement of existing arts buildings and

equipment rather than investing in significant expansion or new infrastructure.  The Arts Council anticipate that the programme will

be oversubscribed and will therefore prioritise investing in National portfolio organisations who can demonstrate that Capital

investment will increase their resilience in the long-term.   During this funding round £55 million will be available and eligible

organisations can apply for grants in excess of £500,000.  There is a two-stage application process.   During stage 1 applicants must

apply via the online application portal, outlining their vision for the project, the amount of funding required and how the project

will contribute to the Arts Council’s goals.   Applicants successful at this stage will be invited to complete a stage 2 application.

The closing date for submitting stage 1 applications is 10 am on the 12th December 2013.

Sport England Inspired Facilities Fund to Run Until 2017 - deadline 16 December 2013

An additional £40 million has been invested in the Inspired Facilities grant scheme which will enable it to offer funding to

community sports projects across England for another three years. The Inspired Facilities scheme, part of Sport England’s Places

People Play programme, is currently accepting applications for Round 5. The scheme is part of Sport England’s goal to deliver a

London 2012 legacy of increased mass participation in sport. It has already invested £71 million of National Lottery funding in the

first four rounds with more than 530 projects complete and operational.  Community and voluntary organisations from across England

can apply now for grants of between £20,000 and £50,000 to refurbish and improve existing facilities, or develop an existing building

for sports use in the community. At least 70% of the available funding available is set aside for these groups. Local authorities,

statutory bodies and education establishments such as schools, can apply for grants between £20,000 and £150,000. The funding is

intended to breathe new life into tired facilities that can be unattractive, expensive to run and difficult to maintain. There is

also money available to convert existing buildings into venues that are suitable for grassroots sport. Groups can apply for the

funding as long as they can show: How their project will keep and, ideally, attract more people to sport; Their local community wants

and needs the project; How the project will cover its running costs and remain open for sporting use for years to come.  The deadline

for applications for Round 5 is 16 December 2013. The next round will be launched in Spring 2014.

Arts Council England's Small Capital Grants - Opens for Round 2 - deadline 19 December 2013

Arts Council England is inviting applications from arts organisations operating in the third sector in England for its second round

of funding for this £24 million grants programme. The Small Capital Grants scheme is designed to benefit arts initiatives taking

place in England, helping to make these projects more sustainable and resilient. The scheme forms part of a range of measures

intended to help create a more sustainable, resilient and innovative arts sector. This programme represents a new approach to the way

the Arts Council uses its capital funds, with investment focused on improving existing arts buildings to make them more economically

and environmentally sustainable and to give arts organisations the right buildings and equipment to support the delivery of their

work. Under Round 2, individual organisations can apply for a capital grant of between £100,000 and £499,999. Eligible projects are

those that require a range of capital expenditure. This could include, for example, improvements that enable organisations to

reconfigure current spaces to generate more income, install sustainable technologies to reduce energy demand or to improve current

facilities to enable improved delivery of their work for artists and audiences. Applications are invited from arts organisations

operating across the private and third sectors in England. Eligible organisations are those that deliver arts activities which can

engage people in England or help artists to carry out their work. The sponsor’s priority will be to support its National Portfolio

organisations that currently own or operate arts buildings and can demonstrate that capital investment will increase their resilience

in the longer term. Examples of eligible arts organisations include: Combined arts; Dance; Literature; Music; Theatre; Visual arts.

The Wellcome Trust – Broadcast Development Awards - deadline 24 January 2014

The Wellcome Trust's Broadcast Development Awards(BDA) support the development of broadcast proposals in any genre that engage the

audience with issues around biomedical science in an innovative, entertaining and accessible way.  The Trust are interested in

funding individuals and organisations with brilliant early-stage ideas for TV, radio, new media or gaming projects. The funding will

enable these ideas to be developed into high-impact, well-researched proposals that can be used to secure a broadcast platform and/or

further funding. Development funds might be used to undertake thorough research, create a taster tape, develop a script, or build a

game prototype or mood reel. The project should primarily be aimed at a mainstream UK and/or Republic of Ireland audience in the

first instance, although the subject matter can be international. Broadcast Development Awards are up to £10 000, for a maximum of

one year.

Hilton in the Community Foundation Central Grants - deadline 11 February 2014

Organisations that work with young people have the opportunity to apply for grants through the Hilton Foundation Central Grants

Programme.  Organisations such as charities and other not for profit organisations can apply for grants ranging from a few hundred

pounds up to £30,000 per year for up to 2 years that meet one of the Foundation's chosen areas of focus, these are: Disabled

children; Children in hospital; Homelessness; Life-limited children in hospices. If favoured, grant applications for up to £10,000

can be approved by the Committee, and applications for more than £10,000 are recommended to the Trustees for final approval. There is

no limit on the amount of money that a charity can request. However, the Foundation is a small charity and generally will not make

awards of over £30,000 (per year). Funding can be requested for up to 2 years for any particular project.

Scottish Power Green Energy Trust - deadline 25 February 2014

Local community groups and not for profit organisations (including schools and other educational establishments) and charities within

the UK can apply for grants for the installation of renewable technologies.  The funding which is available through the Scottish

Power Green Energy Trust will provide grants of up to 25,000 (but most projects receive around £10,000) for up to half the cost of

the chosen renewable technology. The maximum amount would only be awarded to exceptional projects that tick all the boxes and

demonstrate real value for money. Projects also need to have a really strong community benefit and wider educational element. The

Trust considers all kinds of renewable technologies, including: Small-scale hydro; Wind power; Biomass; Landfill gas; Solar energy;

Ground source heat pumps. Applications involving other technologies may also qualify for support. Grant requests must be to support

the capital and installation costs of a renewable energy project.

Rayne Foundation - no stated deadline

The Rayne Foundation's overall theme is social bridge-building. It works in the arts, education, health and social welfare and

development. At any one time, it has a small number of Areas of Special Interest. One of these currently is Arts in Deprived

Communities. The Foundation is interested in hearing from people interested in helping move this agenda forward.

Government fail to overturn Poundland work scheme ruling

The government has lost a Supreme Court appeal over a ruling its flagship "back to work" schemes were legally flawed. Ministers

failed in a bid to overturn an earlier ruling that regulations underpinning the schemes were invalid. The case was brought by

graduate Cait Reilly. She also claimed that requiring her to work for nothing at a Poundland store breached her human rights.

Preston Bus Station will be refurbished not demolished

Preston Bus Station will not be demolished after it was revealed the city council now intends to refurbish the building. The

Government granted the 44-year-old structure Grade II listed status last month. Preston Council wanted to knock down the building and

put up a new station in its place. It said it could not afford the station’s £300,000-a-year running costs or the £17m to £23m revamp

and could still have applied for a certificate of demolition. But in a spectacular U-turn, council leader Peter Rankin said he was

now in talks with County Hall chiefs over possible funding.

Restore station to its former glory

Campaigners who fought to save Preston Bus Station from demolition have called on creative minds to restore the building to its

former glory. Preston Council intends to refurbish the station, after the Government granted the 44-year-old structure Grade II

listed status following an application from English Heritage.  The authority’s Labour leader Peter Rankin revealed he was in talks

with County Hall chiefs over securing money for a revamp and trying to tap into Heritage Lottery Funding. He said the figure of £17m

to £23m, which consultants advised the council it would cost to refurbish the station, was to do “a top quality refurbishment” and

“it would be possible to do something with a lot less than that”.

Sites earmarked for £1.7m respite centre

A new £1.7m purpose built respite centre for children with severe disabilities will be built in Leyland or Chorley. Council bosses

have revealed the two locations they are considering for the new Overnight Breaks Unit. It comes months after Lancashire County

Council announced it is closing eight centres but building four new ones. The services provided at The Bungalow in Preston, Maplewood

House in Bamber Bridge, and Long Copse in Chorley will be relocated to the new location. The council will consult on Lynnhurst in

Stanifield Lane, Farington, near Leyland, or Rydal House in Chorley Hall Road, Chorley.

No pay-off for Lancashire County Council chief executive

The chief executive of Lancashire County Council has quit his role following a disciplinary investigation – but will not receive a

golden handshake. When Mr Halsall left his £180,000-a-year post as finance director of Liverpool City Council in 2008, he walked away

with an extra five years’ enhancement on his pension package - worth around £420,000 - and a lump sum of £80,000. He joined

Lancashire County Council in 2009 as executive director of resources and took up the role of chief executive in 2011.

Campaigners lobby David Cameron over cold homes

Fuel poverty campaigners have written to Prime Minister David Cameron demanding cross-party action on the "national crisis" of cold

homes. Campaigners said the UK was second only to Estonia for people struggling to pay their energy bills across Europe. It came as

Public Health England urged people to keep their homes well heated this winter to avoid potentially fatal health problems. It said

living rooms should be 21C (70F) and other home areas 18C (65F). Campaign group Energy Bill Revolution - an alliance of charities

including Age UK and Barnardos - said the biggest problem in the UK was "leaky homes" and called for investment in a domestic

insulation programme.

Disability welfare changes delayed by assessment process

Disability welfare changes for England, Scotland and Wales have been delayed because the government has been unable to assess

claimants in time. Personal Independence Payments will replace Disability Living Allowance next week only for claimants in certain

areas rather than across Britain. Ministers said assessments were taking longer than expected and the scheme would now be phased in

more gradually. Labour's Rachel Reeves said it showed there was "chaos" in the department.

Universal Credit scheme rolls out

The government's flagship welfare reform - Universal Credit - is starting the next phase of its national launch but far more slowly

than intended.  Hammersmith and Fulham is the latest council to start trials of the new credit, which will replace six means-tested

benefits by 2017. A more ambitious roll-out was supposed to have begun this month. But the process suffered management and computer

problems and Labour has described it "total chaos".

NHS complaints revolution 'needed'

The culture of delay and denial over NHS complaints in England must come to an end, a review of the system says. The

confusing. It said it was putting the health service on a year's notice to improve accountability and transparency.

'Fewer smokers' using NHS in England to try to quit

The number of people using the NHS in England to stop smoking has fallen for the first time in four years, official figures show.

Health and Social Care Information Centre data showed an 11% fall in the number of people setting a "quit date" last year.

Campaigners said it was a "worrying" development. However, the overall success rate for finally quitting smoking increased to 52%.

Jobless youth are 'public health time bomb', says WHO

Youth unemployment in the UK is a "public health time bomb waiting to explode", according to a review by the World Health

Organisation. It warned of the health consequences of high numbers of Neets - people not in employment, education or training.  More

than one million 16 to 24-year-olds in the UK are classed as Neet. The report also said the UK was behind other European countries on

female life expectancy, deaths of children under five and child poverty.

Why 'bags for life' could be carrying germs

In the past few years shoppers have been encouraged to switch their disposable plastic bags for so-called "bags for life" - in order

to help the environment. But health experts have now warned that using the same bag to carry raw meat and soil-covered vegetables

increases the risk of food poisoning.  Hugh Pennington, emeritus professor of bacteriology at Aberdeen University, warned that even

meat which is wrapped in plastic could harbour harmful bugs. The professor told BBC Radio 5 live's Drive: "Washing the bag is not a

very good idea - you can't be certain you've got rid of all the bugs. For any bag that's has raw meat in it, I would recommend that

bag is disposed of."

Cold Weather Plan 2013

Public Health England has published the Cold Weather Plan for England for 2013. The plan aims to prevent avoidable harm to health, by

alerting people to the negative health effects of cold weather, and enabling them to prepare and respond appropriately. The plan has

a strong focus on how the voluntary sector can be involved at all stages, including in the preparation phase. If the sector is not

involved locally, the publication of the document may be an opening to spark a discussion. In other areas it may prompt ideas of how

to deepen involvement.
