6) Embedded devices with Sony laptops using SmartWi application

SmartWi application is used to control the built-in WWAN adapter.

In order for SmartWi to work, you need to install all of the utilities/DLLs under the following folder in the eSupport page for a particular model (For example, refer to URL link below):

- Notebook Control and Utilities (1 file)

- System Components (3 files)

7) I am unable to switch on the embedded WWAN device on my Sony laptop.

If you use the VAIO Smart Network utility without installing the DLLs/Shared Libraries from Sony, you will hit this. This utility, which is used to control the WWAN device, can only be used if you install the pre-requisite libraries and DLLs. The solution is to ensure that these libraries/DLLs are pre-installed before installing/using the VAIO Smart Network utility.

9) I get a RAS error 680 (no dial tone) when I try to connect using my mobile broadband device

This may happen if you have more than one modem configured on the computer. Some computers come with an in built modem and after plugging in the mobile broadband device, there might be two modems. And the connection manager might configure a dial-up connection which uses the wrong modem. So the connection might actually be trying to use the in-built modem when you want it use the device.

How to verify if this is the issue?

You will need to verify if the dial-up connection that your ISV’s connection manager creates is using the wrong modem. Steps to track this are below:

[pic]

• netsh ras set tracing * disable

• del %windir%\tracing\*.*

• netsh ras set tracing * enable

• Dial your connection using the connection manager/dialer application

• netsh ras set tracing * disable

• Open %windir%\tracing\RASMAN.log and search for "ProtocolStart: EntryName:”. Note the entry name here.

• Open the network connections folder. Start –> Control Panel –> Network and Sharing Center –> Click on ‘Change adapter settings’ in the left pane.

• You will see the connection whose name was present in the log file here.

• Rightclick on the connection –> Properties –> Go to the ‘General’ tab

• Check if the modem selected here is the correct one. If not correct it.

• Dial this connection from here –> Rightclick –> Connect and verify that it connects

10) My WWAN device was working on Windows Vista and it not working after I upgraded to Windows 7.

If you have a mobile broadband device that was working on Windows Vista and is now not working on Windows 7 after upgrade, please uninstall the connection manager and drivers and then do a re-install of the same.

11) My AT&T Globetrotter device is not working on Windows 7. I am unable to connect after a reboot.

If you have an AT&T Globetrotter device (Option Icon 322) which is not working on Windows 7, please see below:

Problem #1 - After installing the connection manager from the device, unable to use the device/connection manager to connect to the network after reboot.

This issue gets resolved using the latest AT&T CM 6.10. You can download the latest ACM from .

Problem #2 - Unable to connect using the RAS dialup connection "3G connection" in both Win7 from VANUI and Vista SP1.

The dialup number in the "3G connection" profile is "ppp". By modifying the dialup number in the "3G connection" profile to *99#, you should be able to successfully establish a connection and browse the internet. Please follow the below procedure to change the dialup number of "3G connection" profile through the VAN (View All Networks) UI:

1. Left click on the Network icon in the Task Bar to bring up VAN UI.

2. Right click on the "3G connection" profile and select Properties. (3G connection is created by the AT&T CM after installing it from the device)

3. Modify the Phone number value from ppp to *99# and press OK.

How do I troubleshoot my Mobile Broadband device on Windows 7?

We realize that some of you may encounter issues with using your USB modem or MB data card from your ISV on Windows 7, though they worked perfectly in Windows Vista. This can be due to a lot of reasons - a driver compatible with Windows 7 might not be available, the connection manager application might have application compatibility issues etc. Windows 7 presents a few troubleshooting steps/workarounds that you can put to use to continue enjoying internet access on Windows 7. If the issue, still remains unresolved, do contact your carrier/vendor and drop us a note via our blog at .

Symptom 1: There is an application that works fine on XP, but has issues in Vista & Windows 7

Possible workaround:

One of the reasons could be privilege issue. You can modify the compatibility settings for the application to enable it to run in Administrator mode and then run it. Steps to do this are as below:

• Right click on the application in explorer. Click on Properties.

• Navigate to the 'Compatibility' tab. Check the checkbox 'Run this program as an administrator' under 'Privilege level'.

• Click on OK.

[pic]

Symptom 2: You have a driver package/connection manager installer package which worked on Vista but isn't working for Windows 7

Possible workaround:

In such a case, you could try running your installer/application in Vista compatibility mode. See below for steps to enable 'Vista compatibility' settings on an application so that when you run it, it is launched in Vista compatibility mode.

• Right click on the application in explorer. Click on Properties.

• Navigate to the 'Compatibility' tab. Check the checkbox 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:'

• Select 'Windows Vista (Service Pack 1)' or 'Windows Vista (Service Pack 2)' from the drop down as shown below, depending on which OS it worked well for you. Click on OK.

Symptom 3: The drivers for the device installed successfully, but the 'Connect' button is disabled in the connection manager or the connection manager/dialer application reports that the device is not found.

Possible workaround:

You could check if the drivers for your device are successfully installed. Open device manager (Start -> Control Panel -> Device Manager). Check if your device is recognized here i.e. there is no yellow bang on the device and device manager reports it to be working properly.

If this is the case, but the connection manager/dialer application reports that the device is not found (or connect button is grayed out), then you can create a dial-up connection manually using the modem and use it for connecting to the internet.

For this we need to first get the phone number, username and password details to use in the connection. Use one of the below methods to get this information:

4) Get it from the RAS tracing logs collected when dialing using your ISV's application

i. netsh ras set tracing * disable

ii. del %windir%\tracing\*.*

iii. netsh ras set tracing * enable

iv. Dial your connection using the connection manager/dialer application

v. netsh ras set tracing * disable

vi. Open %windir%\tracing\RASMAN.log and search for "UserName:" and "PhoneNum:"

(The password is usually the same as the username or empty. the password isn't present in the logs for security reasons)

5) You could get these settings from the Connection Manager Advanced settings/Options too.

6) The device manual might have this information too.

Once you have this information, you need to create a new dialup connection using your modem.

Steps to create a dial- up connection

1) Start -> Control Panel -> Open 'Network and Sharing Center'

2) Click on 'Set up a new connection or network' -> 'Set up a dial up connection' -> Next --> Enter the phone number, username /password details.

Enter a connection name, say 'ModemDialup'. (If you have more than one modem attached to the device, be sure to select the right one)

3) Click on 'Connect'

You can access this connection by clicking on the Network icon in the taskbar at the bottom right (highlighted below).

[pic]

You will find 'ModemDialup' connection here. You can use this to connect/disconnect your connection.

|Carrier |Dial-up String |APN |User Name |Password |

|Verizon |#777 |N/A |myphonenumber@ |vzw |

|Sprint |#777 |N/A | | |

|Cingular |*99***1# |isp.cingular |ISPDA@ |CINGULAR1 |

|TATA |#777 |N/A |Internet |internet |

|Airtel |*99***1# | | | |

|Vodafone |*99***1# |WWW | | |

Symptom 4:  Even after installing drivers from the CD, the device is still not recognized in device manager

Possible workaround:

In spite of installing the drivers from the CD that accompanied the device, lets say the device still shows a yellow bang in device manager.

• In this case, note the folder where the drivers were installed, say it is C:\Program Files\FooDriver.

• Open device manager (Start -> Control Panel -> Device Manager)

• Right click on the device (which is still showing a yellow bang) -> click on 'Update driver software'

• Select 'Browse my computer for driver software' -> In the text box 'Search for driver software in this location:', type the install location on your computer where the drivers were installed from the CD. In our example it would be C:\Program Files\FooDriver. Click on 'Next'

This might sometimes help in recognizing the device successfully.

Symptom 5:  USB ports on the computer might stop working after installing drivers for certain devices on Windows 7

Possible workaround:

For certain devices after installing the drivers from the accompanying CD, all USB ports on the computer stop working. To get the USB ports working, use the below steps:

• Note the install location on the computer where the drivers were installed from the CD

• del %systemdrive%\windows\syswow64\drivers\swmsflt.sys

• del %systemdrive%\windows\system32\swmsflt.sys

• Search for swmsflt64.sys in the install location (dir /s swmsflt64.sys) and note the location

• Copy swmsflt64.sys from the above location in step (4) to %systemdrive%\windows\system32\drivers\

• Rename swmsflt64.sys to swmsflt.sys in %systemdrive%\windows\system32\drivers\

• Reboot the machine.
