Guidelines to download & Install VMware and Ubuntu Linux

For VMware:

Please download VMware Workstation 6.0 from

Installation of VMware is very simple like any other software. Just use default options and click next, next...

Once you have installed VMware workstation, then creat a new Virtual Machine for Linux using these steps:

1. Click on New Virtual Machine button in home tab,

2. Click Next,

3. Select Typical and click next,

4. For guest operating system, select Linux and from 'version' drop down menu choose Ubuntu, and click next

5. Now save your virtual machine in a separate and safe partition, i.e. a partition other than C drive or where your windows is installed. In case your windows becomes corrupt you will not be able to run your virtual machine, and you have to create it from scrap. Therefore, select a safe location.

6. Select Use bridged networking option and click next,

7. Set disk size to 6.0 GB and click finish.

A message window will appear notifying that "Virtual Machine created successfully", if this not appears, there might be a problem.

Please not that, you should have at least 1 GB RAM in your system. 512 MB for VMware Virtual machine and 512 MB for your operating system, otherwise it will cause your system to become extreme slow.

If you are using Core 2 Duo, instead of simple P-IV, then take advantage of this technology and change 'processors' to 2 from 1 in Devices panel, just double click the processors and select 'two' and click ok. You can also accomplish this task from 'Edit virtual machine settings' from Commands panel.

For Ubuntu Linux:

Now you have created your virtual machine for installing Ubuntu Linux. Download Ubuntu Linux from and download this version:

Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop. Select Italy Fastbull as Location, as it is pretty fast than other locations.

Once you have download this file, open VMware workstation and click 'Start this virtual Machine' from 'Commands' pannel, i.e. the virtual machine that you have created recently.

Important: You have to press Ctrl+Alt (both buttons at the same time) to release you mouse from virtual machine and to use it elsewhere.

Now Click on VM Menu, point to Removable Devices, then point to CD-ROM and then Click Edit. Select "Use ISO image" and Click Browse, here select and load the .iso file that you have download from .

Click VM menu, then Power and choose Reset, click Ok if prompted.

Now from here Ubuntu Linux Installation starts. Follow these steps:

Select English amongst the provided Languages and Press Enter

Using Arrow Keys, move to "Install Ubuntu" and press Enter; wait for some time now.

Again Select English and Click Forward

Now you have to set your Time Zone, just click Forward, as you can set it latter after installation.

For Keyboard layout, just click Forward. (Default Layout is USA).

Again Click Forward. Do not change these settings.

Now enter your name, set your log in name, set password, and set computer name, and click Forward. Please note that in order to login to Ubuntu Linux, you have to manually type your user name, so remember it once you have set it.

Now you have completed all the 7 steps, now just Click Install.

Now you have to do nothing. Just sit back and relax while your Ubuntu Linux is installed. However, you have to restart your computer once installation is finished.
