NetBackup Restoration Guide for Windows (Symantec Veritas NetBackup)

1. Once the client backup has been performed successfully, it can be restored to the same location or a different location. The destination of the location is subject to user requirements.

2. From the start menu, select Programs->Symantec Netbackup->NetBackup Administration Console.

3. You can view the NetBackup Administration Console in the following screenshot.

4. In the NetBackup Administration Console, expand the NetBackup Management->Host Properties->Master Server. The following screen appears as shown on the next page. The master server is shown in the Host window on the right.

5. Double-click the master server to access the properties of the master server and then select Client Attributes as shown. Insert a tick on “Allow client restore” and insert a check on “Allow both” under the” Browse and restore ability” section and then click “ok”.

6. In order to restore the files or folders, you need to select the “Backup, Archive, and Restore” option. You can select this option by clicking Start->Programs->Symantec NetBackup->Backup, Archive, and Restore” option as shown in the following screenshot .

7. You can also select this option from the NetBackup Administration Console by selecting Files->”Backup, Archive, and Restore” as shown on the next page.

8. You can also select this option directly from the task bar in the NetBackup Administration Console as shown in the next screenshot.

9. Once this option is selected, you can see the following screen.

10. Once this option is selected you can see the screen as shown. The NetBackup communicates with the media server and shows all the folders of a client that were backed up by NetBackup software on the master server. You can view the contents of all the folders and individual files that was specified in the “Backup selection list” of the Backup policy that was created.

The screen also shows the NetBackup History which tells what type of Backup process was performed i.e. Fullbackup, user backup, Differential-incremental ,etc.

11. The above screenshot shows a linux-based client. If you want to view a Windows–based client, you need to change a configuration.

12. You can specify which client you want to restore by selecting File->Specify NetBackup Machines and Policy types, from the “Backup, Archive, and Restore” option.

13. Then select the source and destination client and specify the policy type(MS-Windows –if you are selecting a windows based client) and server used for backup and restores as shown below.

14. You can view the client, in this case nbu_2k3_cl and its contents.

15. You can expand the folder to view its subfolders as shown on the next page.

16. You can also see the contents of all the folders by double-clicking the desired folder from the “contents” window. In this case ,we have selected the local drive(C) to view its contents, as shown on the next page.

You can view the Contents of “C:\” from the screenshot.

17. If you insert a tick on the client in “All Folders” section, all the

contents of nbu_2k3_cl would be selected for the restoration process as shown below.

18. If you want an individual folder to be restored insert a tick on that folder only in the “Contents” section as shown below. You can see that only the contents of that folder have been selected in the contents window.

19. You can also select specific files of the sub folders that you want to restore. See the example screenshot below.

20. Once you have selected the folders that you want to restore, then select “Start restore of Marked Files” from the task bar on the left of the screen as shown below.

21. Once you have selected this option the following screen appears in which you have to specify the destination of the restored folder. There are four choices:

i. Restore everything to its original location

ii. Restore everything to a different location(maintaining existing structure)

iii. Restore individual folders and files to different locations(double- click to modify)

iv. Create and restore to a new virtual hard disk file

The first option is used when you have deleted files or folders from the client and then want to restore those folders back to its original location.

22. The second option is used when you want to restore the files/folders to a different location as shown in the next screenshot. You can also select a location for those restored folders by using the Browse option.

23. The third option is used when you want to specify different locations for the individual folders that are to be restored as shown on the next page.

To specify the destination for the restored folders, use “double-click to modify” option as shown in the next screenshot.

To change the location, you can use the” Browse” option as shown in the next screenshot.

24. The last option is used for Hyper-V server application.

You can see the properties and also write the destination for virtual hard disk file. See the next screenshot.

25. There are restore options given at the end of the screen. The first option is “Overwrite existing files” which is used for restoration. and you can also restore the file using temporary filename. You can also set job priorty of the restore job by inserting a tick in the ”Override default job priority” option. After setting all the parameters of restoration job, select “Start Restore” button.

26. Once the restore job has been started , the NetBackup shows a prompt as follows:

27. In the above screenshot, if you click “Yes”, then you can view the progress of the restore in the following screenshot .

28. You can also view the progress by clicking “Backup, Archive, and Restore ->”View Status” from the task bar.

29. To view the job activity and its detail go to the NetBackup Administration Console and click “Activity Monitor” to view the job.

30. To view a job in detail , double-click that job. In this case we have chosen a restore job with job ID 119.The following screenshot shows the job overview.

31. To view the job details click the ”Detailed Status” button as shown in the next screenshot.

32. When the job is finished, you can see the restored folder at its desired destination.
