This liaison is concerned with two items: XML and XSD assistance, and the OID repository and the ASN.1 module database. It is sent as part of the ongoing work under the ASN.1 Project approved by TSAG in Jan 2001.

a) XML and XSD assistance

Study Groups will be aware that SG7 has given "consent" to last call on Recommendation X.693 for the XML to be used to display and transfer the values of ASN.1 types in XML format.

It urges those working on protocols in Study Groups to give serious consideration to the use of the ITU-T ASN.1 notation as the primary XML schema definition notation. (This has the advantage of using a notation that will be familiar to many in the Study Group, permits XML display, and the use of efficient binary transfers).

It is, however, recognized that some XML tools also require the existence of an XML Schema Definition (XSD). As part of its activity under the ASN.1 project, Q.9/7 is prepared to assist in the definition of XSDs that are related to ASN.1 types, and wishes to ensure that XML documents produced by such XSDs are identical to the XML documents produced by ASN.1 (XER).

Rapporteurs involved with any work using XSD are asked to contact the ASN.1 Rapporteur and leader of the ASN.1 Project Mr Olivier Dubuisson.

b) OID repository and ASN.1 module database

Study Groups have already been informed that it was intended to establish a publicly accessible web-based database of ASN.1 modules.

The mechanisms to support this are new fully developed, and a number of modules have already been included . A press release will shortly be issued.

Any Rapporteur responsible for Recommendations containing ASN.1 modules who has not yet contacted the ASN.1 Project Leader (e-mail address below) is asked to do so as soon as possible to determine priorities in completing the work of putting all ITU-T-defined ASN.1 onto the database.

Study Groups are also asked to note that as an extension of this work the ASN.1 Project will be putting onto the same web site a repository of the allocations that have been made under the top part of the ASN.1 Object Identifier tree. No action is needed from Study Groups at this time, but have a look at as an example of such an electronic repository.
