Formatting diskettes and creating directories and a simple text document

DUE DATE: MAY 23th, Friday, at the beginning of class (15 points)

• Read all of the instructions before starting this assignment.

• This assignment requires two diskettes. Take careful notes while executing the steps.

• For this assignment, the following rules for variables apply:

“yourinitals” represents a 2 or 3 character value (for example, John V. Peters would be JP or JVP)

“YourFirstName” represents your first name (example, John)

DOS Tasks (DOS format):

1. Using DOS, format a floppy disk with yourinitials+SUM03 as the label.

(For example, add SUM03 to the above initials to designate the term, generating JPSUM03 or JVPSUM03)

b. What is the amount of total disk space available in bytes?

c. What is the volume serial number of the diskette?

d. What command would you type to see the contents of the diskette?

2. Using DOS, create four subdirectories on the disk, named (use cases, as indicated):

4. Using Windows, create four file folders on the disk, named exactly the same as those in step 2.

a. List the steps you used to create these subdirectories.

b. What is the information you see when you view the contents of the diskette at this time?

c. View the diskette you formatted with DOS and describe what you see when viewing it in Windows.

UNIX Tasks (UNIX directory creation):

5. Using UNIX on osprey, create a subdirectory called /homepage and set file rights to read + execute.

a. List the steps you used to complete this task. (Take notes in class! Use mkdir and chmod)

b. Copy and paste a view of your filelist with rights. (Use ls –l )

Turn-in Tasks (create, save, scan & print a simple document):

6. Use the applet NOTEPAD to create a document with the answers to the questions asked above.

(Select Start…Run…”notepad” to run the NOTEPAD applet. Do NOT use Word or Wordpad.)

The first line of this document should be your Name, Course/Section, date.

Cut and paste information where possible and type the rest.

7. Name the file YourFirstName.

Save the file into the …\xxWinAssign folder you created on either one of the diskettes.

Copy the file to the other diskette as a backup, using either DOS or Windows. (Do NOT use “diskcopy.”)

8. Scan both diskettes for VIRUSES !!!

9. **PRINT out the Notepad document for turn-in with BOTH Diskettes (a file on each) (as described in syllabus.)**
