The utility adds the records about the backup plan sessions performed in Veeam Cloud Backup to the Veeam Backup & Replication SQL database. As a result, the backup sessions become available in the History view of the Veeam Backup & Replication console. To enable the components integration, you need to install all components of Veeam Backup & Replication Cloud Edition on the same machine where the Veeam Backup & Replication SQL database is deployed. The local system account under which the Veeam.Backup.Notifier.exe runs requires the administrator rights on the Veeam Backup & Replication SQL database.LicensingAll components of Veeam Backup & Replication Cloud Edition use the same license file. The license file should contain a Cloud backup option. If you use a license without the Cloud backup option that you previously obtained for Veeam Backup & Replication, you will not be able to use Veeam Cloud Backup. Veeam Backup & Replication Cloud Edition InstallationTo deploy Veeam Backup & Replication Cloud Edition, you need to install three components: Veeam Backup & Replication Veeam Backup & Replication patchVeeam Cloud BackupThe Veeam Backup & Replication Cloud Edition setup is distributed in two ways: On a DVD image with Veeam Backup Management Suite. This type of installation should be used if you do not have Veeam Backup & Replication 6.5 installed. In this case, you need to install all components of Veeam Backup & Replication Cloud Edition. Installing Veeam Backup & Replication Cloud Edition is also recommended if you have Veeam Backup & Replication earlier than 6.5 installed, for example, 6.1 or 6.0.As a setup archive. A backup plan is actually a task for files upload. In the properties of the backup plan you define what files need to be uploaded to the cloud, what cloud service account should be used, to which bucket the files should be placed and so on. You can run backup plans manually or schedule them to run automatically by the defined schedule. After the installation of the Veeam Cloud Backup, you need to configure a backup plan that will upload your backup files to the cloud storage. Out-of-the box, Veeam Cloud Backup comes with a pre-configured backup plan that uploads files from the default Veeam Backup repository to the cloud. You can adjust this backup plan and run it or create a new backup plan. With Veeam Backup & Replication Cloud Edition, you can chain a VM backup and a backup file upload. To do that, in the post-job properties of a backup job you can define that you want to run a configured backup plan right after the backup job completes. C:\Program Files\Veeam\Cloud Backup\cbb.exe" plan -r "Veeam backup"In this case, Veeam Backup & Replication will first create backups for selected VMs and put it to the selected repository. After that, Veeam Backup & Replication will automatically launch a backup plan in Veeam Cloud Backup that will upload a copy of the created backup files from the backup repository to the cloud.PrerequisitesMake sure that you have installed all the components of Veeam Backup & Replication Cloud Edition as described in the Installing Veeam Backup & Replication Cloud Edition section.Make sure that in the backup repository you have backup file(s) that you want to upload to the cloud. It is strongly recommended that the backups you upload to the cloud are created in the incremental backup mode. In reversed incremental backup chains, the latest backup file always contains a full VM image that is updated with every backup cycle. This means that you will need to upload a large backup file with the full VM image at every run of the backup plan, which will take much time and consume a lot of traffic. With incremental backup, you will need to upload only small increments.Make sure that you have a registered cloud storage account. For most cloud storage providers, you should have the following account information: Access KeySecret Key Bucket NameFor example, if you use Amazon S3 or Amazon Glacier, you can generate an access key and a secret key on the Security Credentials page of your account.(for Amazon users) In the clock settings of the machine on which Veeam Cloud Backup is installed, set the time zone that matches your location and make sure that the system time is synchronized. If the system time is out of sync for more than 15 minutes, Amazon will not process your requests.ProcedureIn Veeam Cloud Backup, click the Backup Plans tab. In the working area, click the Veeam backup plan to expand it and view its details.Click the Edit Backup Plan link at the bottom left corner of the backup plan to start the Edit Backup Plan wizard. At the Select Cloud Storage step of the wizard, select the cloud storage you plan to use. From the list on the right, select Create new account. In the displayed window, specify information of the account you want to use:In the Display name field, enter the name for the account you will be using. You can enter any name you want: the display name used for your reference. In the Access key and Secret key fields, enter the access key ID and the secret key that are associated with your cloud storage account. From the Bucket name, select the bucket you want to use to store files. You can use the existing bucket or create a new one. Click OK. At the Plan Name step of the wizard, change the name of the backup plan if necessary. It is strongly recommended that you leave the default settings at the Select Backup Mode step of the wizard. At the Backup Source step of the wizard, select the source location of your backup files. By default, the backup plan uploads files from the default backup repository: the C:\backup folder on the Veeam Backup server. You can change this folder if your backup files are stored in some other location. At the Schedule step of the wizard, specify the schedule to upload backup files to the cloud. You can choose to run the backup plan at a specific date or periodically. In the latter case, Veeam Cloud Backup will monitor the source location and automatically upload new or changed files to the cloud storage. You can also select to run the backup plan manually. In this case, you do not have to specify any scheduling settings and will need to start the backup plan manually from the Backup Plans view. Important! It is strongly recommended that you do not use the Real-time Backup option to upload backups created with Veeam Backup & Replication to the cloud. At the Pre-Post Actions step of the wizard, make sure that the Execute the command after backup completes check box is selected. By default, after the backup plan has finished uploading files to the cloud storage, Veeam Cloud Backup runs the Veeam.Backup.Notifier.exe utility. Veeam.Backup.Notifier.exe adds a record about the completed backup plan session to the Veeam Backup & Replication SQL database and you can see this record in the History view of Veeam Backup & Replication. Make sure that the Execute post-backup action in any case option is selected. In this case, Veeam.Backup.Notifier.exe will add to the Veeam Backup & Replication SQL database results on both successful and failed backup plan sessions.NoteVeeam.Backup.Notifier.exe will add record to the database only if all Veeam Backup & Replication Cloud Edition components are installed on the same machine where the Veeam Backup & Replication database is deployed. To learn more, see the Permissions section. At the Notification step of the wizard, specify the necessary SMTP settings to receive notifications with upload results. At the last step of the wizard, select the Run backup now check box to start uploading backup files to the cloud storage immediately. Then click Finish. The newly configured backup plan will upload backup files to the cloud storage by the specified schedule. If you have not configured any scheduling settings, you can also start the backup plan manually at any time you need: in Veeam Cloud Backup, click the Backup Plans tab, expand the necessary backup plan and click Run backup now at the bottom right corner. After the upload process is finished, your backup files will be available in the cloud storage bucket.Use Case 2: Restoring Backup Files from the CloudIf a local copy of your backup files is lost for some reason, you can restore backup files from the cloud storage at any moment of time. You can save files to their initial location or to any other location of your choice. To restore files to the cloud storage, Veeam Cloud Backup uses restore plans. You can run the restore plan on demand or save the restore plan to download the necessary files by the required time schedule. PrerequisitesMake sure that you have installed all the components of Veeam Backup & Replication Cloud Edition as described in the Installing Veeam Backup & Replication Cloud Edition section.Make sure you have your backup files uploaded to the cloud storage as described in the Use Case 1: Uploading Files to the Cloud section. ProcedureIn Veeam Cloud Explorer, click the Restore Wizard button on the toolbar. At the first step of the wizard, select to run the restore plan once or save it and run it regularly. At the Restore Type of the wizard, select which version of files you want to get. You can download the latest version of backup files, choose a specific restore point or select to manually download the necessary file version. At the Restore Source step of the wizard, select the files that you want to restore. At the Destination step of the wizard, select the location to which files should be downloaded. You can download the files to their initial location or choose any other location as a destination. If you are restoring files to their initial location that houses the files with the same names, select the Overwrite existing files check box. If you do not select this check box and Veeam Cloud Backup detects files with the identical names in the initial location, the files will not be downloaded from the cloud storage. You can additionally select the Restore only new files check box. In this case, Veeam Cloud Backup will restore from the cloud storage only the files that have a newer time attribute than those stored in the initial location. At the last step of the wizard, click Finish. The created restore plan will be started immediately. To view the results of the restore process, open the History view in Veeam Cloud Backup.Use Case 3: Restoring VM Guest OS Files from the CloudWith Veeam Backup & Replication Cloud Edition, you can restore VM guest OS files from the Veeam Backup files that you have previously uploaded to the cloud. Veeam Backup & Replication Cloud Edition requires no de-staging: you do not have to download the backup files from the cloud storage and extract the VM image to get the necessary guest OS file. VM guest OS files can be retrieved directly from backup files located in the cloud storage. To enable file-level restore, you need to install Veeam Cloud Backup and Veeam Backup & Replication on a VM in the cloud. For file-level restore, Veeam Cloud Backup leverages its ability to mount the cloud storage as a drive to the computer on which it is installed. As a result, you can easily access the backup files in the cloud, just as if they are located on your computer, and use Veeam Backup & Replication to perform file-level restore. The best practice is to use the configured EC2 instance on demand, only when you want to restore VM guest OS files. When the EC2 instance is not needed, you can turn it off. In this case, you will not have to pay VM hosting fees to your cloud provider. PrerequisitesYou must be signed up for the Amazon EC2 service to be able to create an EC2 instance in the cloud. You must have your backup files uploaded to the cloud storage as described in the Use Case 1: Uploading Files to the Cloud Storage section. ProcedureThe file-level restore procedure includes the following steps:Install Veeam Cloud Backup and Veeam Backup & Replication on an EC2 instance in the cloud. Synchronize the local repository on the EC2 instance with the cloud storage. Mount the cloud storage as a drive to the EC2 instance running Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam Cloud Backup. Use Veeam Backup & Replication to restore VM guest OS files from the backup file.I. Installing Veeam Cloud Backup and Veeam Backup & Replication on an EC2 instanceLog on to the Amazon EC2 Management Console and create a new Windows-based EC2 instance. Make sure that the EC2 instance you select meets the following requirements:You must create an EC2 instance in the same region where the S3 bucket with the backup files is located. If the EC2 instance is launched in some other region, the file-level restore processing time will significantly increase or the process may fail at all.You can use any EC2 instance of your choice, except the Amazon EC2 Micro instances. The EC2 instance can run both 32- and 64-bit versions of the following OS’es: Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2, Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2. Note that Microsoft Windows Server 2012 and Microsoft Windows 8 are not supported. To learn more about types of EC2 instances, see . Start the EC2 instance and connect to it. To learn more about working with Amazon EC2 instances, see Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam Cloud Backup on the EC2 instance as described in the Installing Veeam Backup & Replication Cloud Edition section.II. Synchronizing the local repository with the cloudAfter the Veeam Cloud Backup installation, you need to add to it the S3 account that you have used to upload files to the cloud and synchronize the local repository to bring the local database data on the EC2 instance in consistency with the S3 cloud storage.Open Veeam Cloud Backup on the EC2 instance. Select File > Amazon S3 Account from the main menu. Double-click the New Account icon or click Add on the right. Use the S3 Account window to add the account that you have used for uploading Veeam Backup files to the cloud. Make sure that you specify the same bucket for the account.Select Tools > Options from the main menu.In the Options window, click the Advanced tab.Click the Synchronize Repository link at the bottom of the screen. In the Synchronize Repository window, from the Account list, select the account you want to synchronize.Click Synchronize Now.III. Mounting the cloud storage as a drive to the EC2 instanceAfter you have added the Amazon S3 account to Veeam Cloud backup and synchronized the repository with the cloud storage, you need to mount the cloud storage to the EC2 instance running Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam Cloud Backup as a virtual drive. Select File > Amazon S3 Account from the main menu. In the Cloud Storage Accounts window, double-click the account you have added.Click the Virtual Disk tab and click the Install Virtual Disk Driver button at the bottom of the window. After the driver is installed, select the Mount this account as virtual disk check box and select the desired driver letter. IV. Restoring VM guest OS files from backupsOnce the EC2 instance has been properly configured, you can start the file-level restore process. Open Windows Explorer or any other file browser and check if the mounted disk is available. Browse to the uploaded backup files on the mounted disk. Double-click the backup file from which you want to restore VM guest OS files. The backup file will be opened in Veeam Backup & Replication. Select the VM whose guest OS files you want to restore. At the bottom right corner, click Restore and select Guest files (Windows). Veeam Backup & Replication will start restoring the VM guest OS files. After the restore process is completed, it will display the Veeam Backup browser with the tree of the VM guest OS files. Important!File-level restore from backups in the cloud takes more time than file-level restore from backups on the local storage. Please wait for the restore operation to complete without clicking any buttons or closing the application window. In Veeam Backup Browser, right-click the necessary file or folder and select Copy to. Specify the destination folder and click OK. Note that the Restore to original location option in Veeam Backup & Replication is not available for such configuration scenario. After you save the necessary files to the folder on the EC2 instance, you can use any option to retrieve files from the Amazon EC2 instance:Via Remote Desktop Services mapped drivesVia direct download from IIS Web Server installed on the EC2 instanceVia emailVia file sharing services such as DropBoxand so on. ................
