Hard Drive Replacement Instructions for the PNA

These instructions are for use with the E8801-60063/N8980A and the E8364-60190/N8981A Hard Drive kits when used for the purpose of changing an existing Windows 2000 PNA to an XP operating system, or for use if simply replacing the hard drive on an existing PNA already running the XP operating system. Installation can be accomplished in less than a half hour for any microwave PNA; a bit longer for an RF PNA (9 GHz or less.)

Before You Get Started

When you change operating system or replace the hard drive with this kit, you will lose all existing information and settings that have previously been saved. This includes all user calibrations, account names and passwords, network and domain settings, and all other files. You will not lose any installed PNA options. Before beginning, store all needed files to an external storage device and note all needed network settings. You will also need a floppy disk to back up several calibration files.

For a PNA currently running Windows 2000 only: The BIOS on the 500 MHz CPU board must be updated or XP will not function due to lack of activation. The BIOS update eliminates the need for activation. Make sure that power is not lost during this 1 minute process or the CPU may become unusable. This BIOS update is not needed if the PNA has previously had XP installed.

Hard drive removal is very easy on microwave units; it is readily accessible on the rear panel by loosening 4 screws. On RF units, access to the hard drive is more difficult. Step by step removal instructions are contained in the appropriate PNA Service Guide. To find a Service Guide for a particular PNA model, go to , search by model number, then look under the heading Manuals & Guides.

Connect only a mouse and keyboard during this process and disconnect any LAN cable.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Before making any changes to your PNA, copy all files that begin with mxcalfile_* from the C:\Program Files\Agilent\Network Analyzer directory to a blank floppy disk (the PNA BIOS Update Disk included with the hard disk drive could also be used for this purpose since it has sufficient room.) Also copy the file gen.lic located in the same directory. To avoid any future confusion label the floppy disk with the PNA model number, serial number and the current date.

2. Turn off the PNA and remove the existing hard drive. Note how the mounting hardware is used. If replacing the CPU board, then remove and replace the CPU at this time.

If replacing the hard drive on a PNA currently running Windows XP, or a PNA with a 1.1 GHz CPU, skip steps 3 and 4, and continue with step 5. Steps 3 and 4 apply only to a PNA currently running Windows 2000 on a 500 MHz CPU.

3. With the hard drive still disconnected, insert the PNA BIOS Update Disk (included with the hard disk drive) into the PNA and reboot. The PNA will automatically boot from this floppy disk and begin updating the BIOS. This entire process takes about one minute. Make sure power is not lost during this update process!

4. When the BIOS update is done, press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds until the power turns off. Remove the floppy disk.

5. Install the new hard drive; making sure it is mounted similarly to the old drive. If needed, also apply the XP license sticker on the right side of the PNA.

6. With a keyboard connected to the PNA, apply power and switch on the PNA. The XP initialization process will proceed automatically. You may be asked to make a selection based on the number of test ports present on the PNA. Follow any displayed instructions. This entire process takes about 5-15 minutes depending upon the PNA configuration. The PNA will automatically reboot several times during this process.

7. After the PNA application screen is displayed, you may see a reminder to upgrade firmware; ignore this message by clicking on OK. Note the start and stop frequencies on the PNA, then close the PNA application. You can ignore any currently displayed message that requests a reboot of the PNA.

8. Copy all the previously stored mxcalfile_* files from the floppy disk back to the C:\Program Files\Agilent\Network Analyzer directory and also to the D:\calfiles directory (this is used as a backup for recovery purposes). Copy the gen.lic file back to the Network Analyzer directory only if the PNA did not display the proper start/stop frequencies in step 7.

9. Re-start the PNA application, and verify that an S11 trace (with a short or open applied) is at or near zero dB. If not, close the PNA application and repeat step 8.

10. While the XP installation is now done, you may need to add user accounts/passwords and set up any network configurations such as machine name, printers, proxy servers, network drives, etc.

11. [Optional] There is an Agilent account used for servicing, with a default password. For maximum security, this password should be changed from its default. To obtain the serial-specific password, contact CTD-SoCo_support@ and provide the model and serial number of the PNA.

12. Once step 10 (or 11) is done, you should perform the following step to ensure that any future recovery process will maintain your accounts and passwords.

13. Close the PNA application. Click on Start, Run, then enter 123 and click on OK. The PNA will back up registry information. Ignore any message you may see about a file not being found. Although the process will appear to pause; just wait. The entire process takes about 60 seconds!

Note: The default administrative account name is PNA-admin and the password is agilent

Note: The hard drive is shipped with the latest Microsoft updates and PNA firmware that were available at the time the hard drive was configured. Newer versions may be available. If your PNA will be connected to a LAN, we strongly recommend that you run the Windows Update utility (click Start, Windows Update) and install any critical updates. When complete, check for newer firmware by running the PNA AgileUpdate utility (click System, Service, AgileUpdate.) If the PNA does not have a LAN connection, you can download new firmware at .
