SPRING NEWSLETTER

As this will arrive on your screen on or around Spring Day, it is time get up, shake off our hibernating garb and greet the world again! Admit, it is not so hard to find the swimming gear at the bottom/back of the cupboard and head for the nearest pool. Don’t believe those who say “Pushing 40/50 is exercise enough”. With just 193 days left to National Champs in Durban, we need to get into the water and show our bodies we haven’t forgotten what having fun is really all about.

The above is NOT for all those hardy, brave, shinning example of masters swimmers – those members who have been enjoying the fun, fitness and friendship at all the frostbite series galas, club training days and winter challenges. You know who you are BUT guys, WHERE ARE THE REST OF YOU?!!

Your Committee for 2007/8

As a reminder, these are the people who are going to help make your swimming just amazing this year.

Yvette Coetzee             Chair

Annemarie Dressler      Vice - Chair

Marli Venter                 Treasurer

Peter Ponsonby            Secretary

Anne Jones                   Social and Club activities

Clair Davie                   Open Water Swimming

Open Water

Clare Davie has agreed to take on the role of looking after members who are particularly interested in open-water swims, arranging for entry forms to get to them, organising lifts and having a Phoenix marquee at all the swims as a meeting/kit storage place. We need to encourage open-water swimmers to join the club even if they are not going to swim galas.

Clare will be running a Marathon, Half Marathon and 10km Challenge over the season. You will be able to accumulate your mileage in all open water swims to achieve the required distances. Watch this space for more details.

Membership

To date Phoenix has 33 signed members for this new season – welcome to Dan Singer, our newest member. The rest of you, remember to register a.s.a.p (registration forms attached) i.e. NOW

Club Training Day

Back by popular demand!!

The coaching and video recording session to be held with Dean Price is taking place on Sunday the 9th September at 11h00 at the Mandeville pool. The cost of the session is R20.

We hope to see many more Phoenixes at the coaching that really was great the last time.

Please confirm with either Yvette or Anne your attendance.

Coaching Clinic – Invitation

Attached please find the invitation to a unique coaching clinic to be held on the 8th September at St Benedict’s College.

Hope our members will take this opportunity and attend the workshop

- GMS Short-course Championships. A very disappointing turn-out from all clubs but those who swam felt really good to have started the season – also it was a chance to wish Gary Coetzee farewell at the local Keg. We are going to miss you Gary!

- Winter Challenge . 4 brave members (Peter, Doug, Anne and Clare) saved Phoenix from complete disgrace and Clare Davie managed to swim a fantastic 4 kms and at the same time matched the distance swam by the Wahoo team of 4!! Well done Clare. Thanks to Gloria for coming to count for us. Thanks to Wahoo for the loan of the pool and hospitality afterwards.
